Not totally clean but a heck lot more better than they were!
I also found that due to the head soaking of brake cleaner i allowed it to drip into the piston head rings gaps and slowly it cleaned out all the gunky carbon and went over the main rings wiping them with a cloth and 'swirling' them round and rewiping them and eventually the piston ring gaps were clean enough for the rings to be 'loose' again.
