Hi guys,

I was fitting my heated grips today and now seem to have a problem with the alarm. So I wired the positive wire of the grips to the spare ignition point on the fuse box, then we I switched the bike on to check everything was working I noticed a problem with the alarm. It seems to be engaging when the bike is on. Also when I tried to start the bike I'm getting some cranking but the bike wont fire :(

Any ideas, the battery is pretty much new and has been kept pretty well maintained since I got it. Also I've checked all the fuses and none are blown . . any advice is a good thing :)

Thanks Ant.

Just to note, the alarm is a datatool system 3.

Hi, It is very difficult to diagnose faults like this without being there. The first thing to do is check the wires you have disturbed. Have you cut any wires? Have you removed any connections. Start by disconnecting the connections to the grips.Heated grip wires. put everything back as it was before you started. Does the bike run now?

If not then you must have disturbed a wire or connection when you did you work. so check the wires look for taught ones that may have been pulled. The alarm, if after market, breaks a feed wire to ignition and/or the fuel circuit. This is often done badly and you could have disturbed their connections. So if you can see any wiring that does not look original (may have taped joints) then this is where to look.

If you still have problems try to get more specific details so we can help. Dave

maybe u cross wired summat and the fuse for the alarm has blown.. 10amp red spade fuse if I recall but dont quite me.. should be in an inline fuse holder - trace from your alarm under the seat

Yip fuse was fine I'm looking through to see if anything else is going on . . but dont see anything out of the ordinary . . I did have a slight fuel leak though onto some of the wires and Im wondering if this could cause any problems. But unsure. The thing I find weirdest is that I can switch the bike on but then the alarm will enagage whilst the bike is on . . I'm thinking to just remove the damned thing.

i would disconnect the wiring you have done for the grips 1st and see if everything returns to normal, if it does then try connecting the live somewhere else. i was going to fit my grips myself but decided to get them fitted by a bike mechanic (i'm not very good at things like this) but i dont remember him going to the fuse box (i may be wrong), he has however wired them up so they switch off with the ignition, i could try and find out where he wired them upto though if it would help you. what grips are they? mine are the r&g ones.

Oh sorry, forgot to mention I've completely removed everything to do with the grips for now and it's back to how it was. Also I was following the hot grips guide on the forum here, which mentions the spare ignition point on the fuse box, so I connected up to that . . all seemed ok but strange the alarm is still acting funny :(

Sprocket if the Alarms a Datatool 3 I have one on my Curvy and had an ignition problem. The alarm would re engage with the ignition to On and hitting Start did nothing. This was because I was shorting my Ignition where it rubbed on my body frame. I don't know if that'll be any help but if theres no life and the alarms re engaging the alrams getting nothing from the ignition barrell or somewhere along thats wiring.

Hmm that could be the problem guess I'm gonna have to look through all my cables and see what I can find . . good to know someone else has had a similar problem :) Thanks for the advice guys, I'll update when I know more :)

Found and fixed the issue, I had to strip off a load of electrical tape to find it but found a connection which had some connection from the alarm too and it was looking a bit green, seems it wasn't passing current properly anymore so cleaned this up and checked through the rest. Tested and it seems to be working correctly now :) yay!! Thanks guys :)
