Apparantly the wheel collapsed and didn't fall off because it wasnt tightened properly

Anybody remember the late Robert Dunlop's back wheel collapsing on his Honda RC45 just after Ballaugh Bridge at the T.T. in 1994? Reminded of that when I saw this happen. .
jesus H christ, can you imagine the rollocking the wheel manufacturer got after that one.......this is why im glad i have an SV650 that doesnt produce the power required to do something like this haha

According to Eurosport the wheel must have had a knock or summat at some point and had a crack that hadn't been spotted resulting in it exploding. James Whitham was saying they should be replaced more regularly than some teams do.

Saw happen live, it was like WTF! The rider was okay after off which is good.
JT wasn't there this w/end hopefully he will be at Silverstone, later on in the year. Some good racing this w/end was awesome
suppose its a good job it happened just as he was accelerating out of a corner and not just about to brake at the end of a long straight

manufacturing faults do just happen,
If its carbon fiber I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often!?
What im more suprised about is that not one person, nor commentator seems to have spotted that the following BMW rammed the Ducati just at the apex.
A second or so later as they are just coming out the bend, the Ducati rider turns his head as if to say "wtf you doing" at which point the weel hub snaps and the wheel comes flying off.

Yup thats how I saw it. Rammed, then snapped hub/axle/spokes.
Its a definite comedy classic though. Robert Dunlops on the other hand was horrendous.:( Still completely vivid in my head.

If you freez frame it, there's nothing inside the tyre, no wheel.

Yes there is, the rim and the remnants of some spokes are still visible inside the tyre. The hub and most of the spokes are missing though.
There is no way the rider behind hit him; to sustain that sort of damage I doubt either of them would have stayed on their bikes, and yet you don't even see a wobble from either through the apex. It happened literally as he cranks the throttle open exiting the bend, so obviously the wheel was on the verge of failure and the extra torque finished it off.

We also watched this live, frightening really...glad he walked away from it.

From what I saw he did. All the replays I saw after the incident didn't go far back enough to show the collision. He literally taps the back wheel enough obviously to cause some damage.

Watching this replay, at about 37 seconds you can see Berger's bike jolt a little bit at the corner before as if he was nudged by the following bike
