As some of you know, we have had Rosie the Kawasaki GTR1000 touring bike in our garage for close to three years and she is a bit of a wreck.

To be honest, she was never that great looking even when new, but she has a seat like a sofa and can eat miles the way I eat chocolate. Carol though has liked them for a while and has had a couple of them.

Sadly this is how she looks now.

Once the fairing is off, she does not look like such an ugly behemoth, but you can see the rust on the forks and the pitting is so deep, it would need a lot of work grinding and re-chroming to make them useful again.

So it was with a heavy heart we considered scrapping her, until a final look through E-Bay and we won new forks, new rear shock and maybe even new disks. :smt080

Our aim is to have this monster back on the road in time for the Bulldog bash, but with out the ugly and very broken fairing.

It is going to be a busy summer keeping this lot running!

I am always extra nice, unless I am berating her looks online!

Well, I am not editing it now, it spoils the fun of everyone thinking I am a bit of a cow! :smt036

If your desperate I think the SV brakes are the same 2 pots (i think!!!) if it the model I think it is

Good luck with the rebuild, it is a laugh doing stuff like that.

But seriously, you've got pretty much the worst of all worlds, a time in motorcycling when handling and brakes were given mere lip service (and not the good sort). Their way to try and disguise the "hinge in the frame" feeling seems to have involved filling the frame tubes with lead.
It didn't work.

Same as what? I seriously doubt it, the GTR brakes are prehistoric.

When we are in the garage with the music playing it is most likely going to be old school Punk, think The Ruts, Siouxsie etc... :smt080

Off to get the forks tomorrow and maybe a set of disks depending on condition and cost. It is going to be a busy day...

:smt101

Thanks for the encouragement folks, this is going to be so much fun and I can't wait to see Carol's face when she can ride it again. :D

Rosie the GTR lives. We got her started under her own power last night, once we remembered to put the fuel in the tank. This is the first time she has ran in four years and we just wanted to see if she was a runner before we start the big strip down.

While working on the bikes, our friend popped by with her kids for a quick cuppa.

While Carol was working on the GTR, I was working on Agnes, our XJ400/550 cruiser. I stripped the old engine and found very little damage in the head, the valves were fine is a little sooty, however as I got deeper into the bowels of the engine, we started to find fragments of metal.

The big worry is where did the brown sand come from, we found it only in one cylinder and it was like very fine talc, only brown and a bit gritty!

http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/206328_10150252900460828_684250827_9159687_8306017 _n.jpg

At that point I stopped, we had a horrible feeling that the damage was in the bottom of the engine. There was a bit of a clue, the teeth on the sprocket that drives the cam chain from the crank was stripped with broken teeth! The cam chain could be made to jump just by pulling it around the sprocket! :reaper:

Yay its alive :D Love the look of disgust on your face while holding those bits of metal ;) Keep up the good work you two :D

As stated, Rosie lives, but boy is she loud!

HCJoJKzX3Wc

So once that we knew that she worked, off came the knackered bits ready for the new exhaust when it arrives. We still have a fair bit of work to do, there is a lot of rust to sort out and a few bits to clean up or replace, but I am hoping that she will be on the road very soon.
