Renault wanted to charge me £230 for new front brake pads (fitted).
Pads cost me £17 and I paid someone at ATS £10 to fit them, and if im honest i could of saved that tenner by doing them myself.

Mine's booked in next week, if it's not under warranty I'll probably have to fake my own death - same place quoted me £1k more than the next garage for a headgasket on another car.

Never had a new car so never been sucked into the whole main dealer servicing thing for first x number of years for warranty etc but cant understand how main dealers stay in business at such crazy rates... in general large portions can be done DIY with a quick google and the bits that cant usually take it to a reputable indy and pay half (yet still extortionate 50 quid ph labour rates)

Shocking recent one was my reviewer at work with her Audi TT 53 plate taken to Audi shrewsbury couple of months back. Told her this lot:

-track rod ends had snapped and were dangerous to drive on
-that coils had snapped and need replacing in pairs
-split induction pipe (piece of plastic) quoted over £250
-said needed new tyres all round and when quizzed there was over 5mm left eg nearly new
-hifi replacement £500 for 'unfixable' head unit (error cleared and started working for £0 )
-told needed a cambelt change + waterpump when the girl remembered they'd been done the year/2 before at the very same garage and the woman who gave her the quote said 'oh yes i see it now' - if she hadnt have paid attention she wouldnt have known any better and worried about cambelt failure etc....

few other crazily priced unnecessary bits and total quote was £4700+:confused::confused::confused:

53 plate worth not much more than that itself!!

She took it to a very reputable indy in telford for a second opinion
-no broken track rod ends, not unsafe after full check
-coils replaced on rear advised no need for done as pair on rear as good cond.
-induction pipe was actually bought and fetched from audi shrews by the mechanic and fitted to the car for £50!!!!!

total work all in was £270... mental!! just makes me sad that some old dear would be worried into paying such mental money without knowing better... i know as a naive youngster myself i did the same trick and paid far too over the odds

semigrumblerant over!

Kwak - wtf are you taking a 2003 car to a main dealer when it can quite happily be looked after by a good independent without affecting the resale value? Any BMW buyer knows that reputable indie garages are as good and in many cases better than the main dealers, so a stamp in the book from them is worth as much or more than a main dealer one. My BMW goes to our local indie garage when it needs anything I can't do myself and I can't fault their work or prices.

Parts like keys and door actuators can be supplied by indie BMW suppliers like GSF or Europarts. Same parts from the same OE manufacturers at a fraction of the costs. When I had my E28 528i back in the early 90s I needed a wing after I smacked a gate post - main dealer price even back then was about 100 quid, I got an identical BMW branded but differently packaged replacement from an indie supplier for 35.

I ordered a new key from Toyota, 'only' £115. The thing is, I was able to see the screen (due to their improvised parts department 'desk') and that the key costs £57-odd, the rest is labelled as profit.

What's more, I was told it was due to arrive a week ago. I'm going there today and if it's not there I'm getting my effing money back. I can buy a new key off fleaBay, have it cut and program it myself using instructions from the owner's club.

I asked Ford not so long ago how much it would be to have a key cut and programmed came to something like £130. Just got one cut and another cloned for the princely sum of naff all.
Local high stgreet locksmith charges £60 to cut a clone a key

i a mate look at it who couldn't deal with it then a work colleague who deals in cars but they both couldn't sort it, i then took it to my local garage who also said he couldn't diagnose the problem so all that was left was the stealer.
i did try the cheap route but its been pi$$ing me off for months now so wanted it sorting.
