It's the little bottle down the side to the left of the engine, hard to see and get to!

As i have the engine out it was worth a check, this little bottle has overflow rubber hoses coming in and going out and is a very important part of your engines ability to keep cool and breath!

Let this be a warning not to fill it with tap water and the wrong type of coolant.

You should be using a 50/50 mix of Distilled water & Ethylene Glycol Anti freeze (NOT alcohol based anti freeze)

The rubber hose that comes out the bottom of it was clogged up as well so it wasnt doing its job. I cleaned it out using fresh warm water and a handfull of metal nuts and shook it like mad to dislodge all the crud at the bottom.

I think many under-estimate exactly how important water / coolant is to the well-being of their engine!!

My sister ran her car for about 2 months on NO coolant... engine cracked!

Good post! Looks like alot of crap settled to the bottom of the reservoir bottle

Plus it had blocked one of the hoses, i dont think it had any relation to my gearbox problem but i was lucky that this didnt produce any problems beyond that. Sv's need a lot of tlc that one of the things ive discovered so far.

Ask yourselves do i check these sort of things on a regular basis? - i wouldnt rely solely on the yearly service to pick up this kind of stuff.

TBH in that instance, it wouldn't do any harm, worst it could do is leave the radiator low by couple of ml if the crap stopped coolant from returning.

Update: - i found out where you can get the right coolant fluids.

Asda's coolant is the right type (check the back of it to make sure)
Tesco's sell distilled water £1.50 for 1L

You can buy the right type of coolant in lots of places; any motor factors will sell a suitable product, and probably most supermarkets.
