Surprised no one has posted up about the playstation network being hacked and down for over a week and private information being compromised.
Including user credit card details.
Looks like you wont get your hard earned trophy's either when the service is back up !

Booo !! PSN ! ! boo boo boo !

Glad I only use my ps3 consoles for homebrew and media centre.

:smt037 sony epic fail

Xbox live WTF ;)

I like my PS3 still, as can play Bluerays, play games and hook my hard disk to it.........been quite enjoying playing offline games to be honest - means I don't have to listen to Americans / French players squabbling / having a chin wag mid game.

Plus - for the sake of say a week or two downtime.....I still don't have to pay for it. As for the security of data.....username & password is not the same as any other accounts I have, so thats not an issue.

PS3's are good, so are xbox's but when Sony started to remove features which consumers paid for when they purchased the consoles is taking the Pi$$ (im not talking about the PSN) and this is the main reason for start of all this uproar.
Also with an XBox you own the console if you play on-line with backup games you run the risk of getting your console banned from the network that seems fair to me.
But the way sony have been acting the past few months its as if you dont actually own the hardware you purchased and if you tamper with the unit you run the risk of being taken to court and fined and all sorts of other boll0cks stuff.
the user name and password might be ok but if you ever used your card details on the store then they could be in anyone's hands now.
And if you read the new T&C's the other week by the looks of things the PSN might not be free of charge for much longer.
Sony are killing there own REP in the tech world.

There's nothing to stop you messing with your machine but if you do, they will ban you from THEIR network. I really can't see what people have got to complain about.

Oh, and Xbox Live has never gone offline? I beg to differ.

Simples....one quick call to my bank and thats sorted. Mild inconvenience, but not the end of the world.

To be honest, there are good points and bad points for both consoles......it is like the whole curvy / pointy debate and will never actually be resolved......people will always disagree.

For me, PS3 does what I need it too. Not going to fork out money just because of a couple of annoying occasional issues.

.

No it's not the banning I'm fine with that but they have removed features from my console which was in the original spec when the console went on sale and this feature played a big part in my purchase. I used this feature for 3 years then it was removed with a mandatory update, and now if I hack my console to run otherOS again and discuss on forums with other people and share info how to get it working I may face a court suit and big fines.

I own multiple of both consoles they are both excellent machines and your right they both have pro's and con's but if you want to be specific on the networks then I say xboxlive is a much better experience than the PSN.
From the voice codecs to friends/points systems the interface the connection everything is better on the xboxlive network imo

Oh and pointy vs curvy ;) pointy wins I would swap my curvy for a pointy like my old one any time !! Ha ha

"A hacker stole the names, birth dates and possibly credit-card numbers for 77 million people who play online videogames through Sony (http://online.wsj.com/public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=sne) Corp.'s PlayStation console, in what could rank among the biggest data breaches in history."

I thought i'd give the ps3 a go with iplayer and try out the move. I'm still not sure what the psn is all about having never connected

Does that mean PS3 owners will finally get off of their high horses rather than being all self righteous (injury_ian) to their xbox360 brothers? :|

Slower, less sexy looking pc wanna'be console cousins, not brothers ;)

I admit xbox live runs much better (and seemingly more secure) but I just can't get on with the huge controllers.

But we.(x box) do pay due the privilege for on line . So it should be allot better .
you can't moan about something you got for free.
And like said before a call to the bank to get a new card is not the end of the world.

A friend has already had his card used abroad in the past week and he attributes it purely to the Sony issue. Tis a shame but at least the hacking shows up any downfalls in security. Glass half full and all that jazz!

Wrong again.

I'll admit it's been ergonomically designed and has a button for every possible eventuality however, as far as a 'ting of beauty, it is most certainly not, unlike the stylish & amply laden PS controllers.

Now, as far as best ever....

Old school but for me the ultimate interface, Kempston Joystick.
Okay, it has it's flaws (you are not going to master mortal kombat fatalities) but as far as pure gaming (80's) it was as near to 'being on the grid' as it got.

p.s.
PS3 rule, xbox drule. :smt080

BTW where does it say that Credit Card details were nabbed?

Under all electronic payment regulations companies are not allowed to store this information, except in some cases and in those the data has to be stored in a non-human readable encrypted manner.

Yes the xbox1 pads were awful but the 360 pads are great.

As for the the joystick in the pic, I had that exact one for my Atari 520st, loved the repeat fire button.

It seems the press release has changed again on Sony's website. It previously mentioned credit cards. Hopefully PCI will come and give them a full rubber glove audit.

It's ****ing ridiculous, hope they get sued big time. If they've not encrypted 75 million people's sensitive data that has surely got to be a breach of the data protection act - or at the very least common sense.

What I think I read in the London Metro paper this morning was that Sony believed that the 16 digit Credit Card numbers may have been hacked but the other card security info was "secure". mmmmm?

Meh, I'm a PS3 man and stick by PS3. Xbox is naff.

I think these hackers are merely out to prove a point. Besides, they can have my card details if they so wish, I'm skintaroony so I have nothing to lose.

I have beef with EA though, knobs don't let you play online sports games if they're outdated by a year, the thieves!

Unfortunate timing though during the easter break, was looking forward to some time on my PS3 that I don't get a lot of these days!

6 months ago a developer broke down whatr was sent back to the psn servers as startup info on his own console and found that his name, password and cc details were sent together in a basic text file.

The hacking of the psn has only happened due to the OS being removed in the 3.41 update. Alot of users enjoyed linux on the ps3 and then sony remove it. There is a case ongoing at the moment in one of the scandanavian countries where the countrys commerce section have ruled sony have acted unlawfully by removing OS via an update on a cosole that was sold with the OS installed, deeming the console now, not fit for purpose. They have stated that sony should pay the claimant £100. This hasnt gone to court as of yet but the claimant has documents that show the commerce section believe sony have acted unlawfully by removing OS.

I`ve binned my ps3 in a swap for a jtag`d 360. I have an online 360 for messing with mates but the swapped jtag is pretty cool and has a 2tb external hdd hard wired to the pcb with games on, emulators and lots of other goodies. :)

This is a classic case of a closed non open source system falling on it's **** they take away any individuality on the grounds of security to make all the machines the same. But the big problem then becomes hack one, hack them all!

No System is infallable and the more choice they take away, the more Hackers are going to see this as a challenging but rewarding target. You wait for the fall out when the I-phone system gets hacked.

Pretty much agree there totally, EA does annoy me as well, so much I've only just bought one of their games for first time in ages as I was boycotting them.

Tiger woods is brilliant btw.
