So i been riding for 7 1/2 years and had 2 offs but until today no speeding tickets, was caught doing 38mph in a 30mmph, annoying thing is i know the camera its on my way home from work and its about 20 yards after the 30mph signs as the limit drops from 40mph to 30mph. Caught me fair and square. lol

Good thing is i can do an awareness course and avoid points or a fine

Funny it was on the SV as i've had much bigger faster bikes and never been caught

Is the course thing a countrywide thing? I got caught a couple of weeks ago, just sent my licence off and just about to say goodbye to £60. Pretty annoyed now that I found I could have gone on a course which would have been a lot more useful (and money saving of course)

you still get to pay the fine.. and get to sit thru' a (imho) a very boring lecture on speed awareness... the only benefit is no points on your licence (and the repercussions of that)

According to the letter you have to pay for the cost of the course which is less than £60 you would pay in a fine

i think if its a static one you have the choice from course or points, and if its a mobile one you have to have the points...

Not correct. Depends on the speed and the region. Nothing to do with fixwd or mobile.

+1, I got caught by a mobile scamera van and got offered points or speed awareness course by Norfolk Constabulary.

Cost me £125 if I remember, but cheaper than points in the long run

Do you have to declare a speed awareness course to your insurer? I presume you are still technically convicted of speeding, therefore have to declare something?

Pegs had a clean vehicle license for 20 years. He got his first points last year, when he decided to take a quick ride for a bit o cake in Liverpool on the sly!
He'd been followed all the way from the dock, on the ZZR, bimbling away at 30mph, and with the sliproad in sight for the motorway rolled on the throttle, to be caught for speeding by the car following him a wee bit behind:(

There were loads of people putting their foot down as he sat there, taking his points and fine. The coppers had the cheek to ask if the ZZR was his, they had a thought it may be stolen and once on the motorway couldn't have caught him, so pulled him over quick, then issued him with points when they found him to be the owner.......correct me if I'm wrong, but since when does a bloke in several hundreds of pounds worth of Rukka textiles and a Shoei helmet, minding his own business, look like a scouser tea leaf:confused:

I don't think they offered him any speed awareness course, or he'd have taken it.

I don't believe it appears on your licence, so no. But I think for other offences you can have it on your licence but with no points, which you would have to declare.

I could be wrong.

Ah I got caught in Hastings at 11.30 at night, by a copper with a speed gun hiding away. Only saw him when I was right on top of him and nearly ran the poor bugger over. Hi-Viz my backside, he was wearing one, but I didnt see it at all. 43mph and in a 30, only did a gentle overtake of someone going dead slow, and I mean dead slow. Wasnt offered any course or anything. Just told it was £60 and theres 3 points aswell. The copper down the station when I went to give up my licence for the points asked if I was accepting it or wanted to say it wasnt me and was a false accusation, I just couldnt be bothered so accepted it.

Ah well, was bound to get a ticket sooner or later.

I didn't because you aren't convicted of a speeding offence, no points on your licence, so no conviction

Do speed guns function correctly at night?

Fixed cameras do, because of the lines on the road & flash from the camera, I know because i'd got done twice at night.

But a hand held camera?

Hand held are infrared aren't they?

I installed the VOIP telephone system in one of these Speed Awareness Course centres, called Drivetech.

The letter also says if you do the awareness course you are not convicted so no need to tell your insurer! Even if it is more than £60 will save me tonnes in the long run only being 23 and all my insurance quotes are just becoming reasonable and i have 4 years NCB

Here's the answer to my question

SPEEDAR
This resembles a large black hairdryer, held at arm’s length by a police officer - Every police force in the land uses at least one of these - usually many more. Radar signals bounce off moving cars to tell exactly how fast the vehicle is travelling. Operators aren’t supposed to sit in their cars and use a hand-held radar device. Range is only 500m. Unsuitable for dense traffic, it does work at night.

And is out of date as far as I'm concerned.

LASER is how it's done now by hand. Works fine at night, in fog, rain and bright sunshine. Can't go through a window.

The really silly thing is, as a cop, I can't offer the speed awareness course.
