View Full Version : Sanity Check: Building a shed

Afternoon all,
I'm finally getting around to assembling my long fabled shed. I was given it in component pieces at the start of the year but have only just gotten chance to get the base sorted. It is 3m x 5.5m and in essentially 3 sections, there are 3 floor panels to lay and then the wall sections and ends etc. it was previously assembled with threaded bar between most of the joints, some of this may have gone missing, am I alright to screw the two sections together where necessary? any pitfalls to avoid etc?

I've got to re-lay the felt on the roof as it was cut into the 3 sections to transport. I've got new felt and nails for it, am I best stripping the old felt or laying this on top to give some extra layers of protection?

Any other advice?
I'm planning to use an angle grinder to cut a channel in my concrete/tarmac drive to run a cable in to provide power, I can't really string a cable overhead and this seemed like a neater solution but can anyone see something I've overlooked?

Any other advice appreciated as always!

Thanks in advance

The huge shed that we had the roof was cut into 2 bits. Just joined them back together, run a strip of felt down the length and sealed it back up with tar. No need to strip the whole lot.
As for the cable, we just got a huge run of piping for the length of the garden, cut in two sections (it was to long to feed into a continuous length) and fed the cable in. Then just fixed it to the fence, this saved digging a trench to put it in and avoided us in the future accidentally putting something through it while gardening.
The whole thing was screwed together and we even cut a new larger door in the side, ensuring that we re-enforced it where required.
Base was just 'rollered' mud, covered with gravel and 15 flagstones, then the shed was raised up on a number of aged wooden lengths to allow air to move under and moisture move away.

Cool, just the reply I was after.
The existing felt is a little shabby and I've already bought the new felt so I'll still fit it I guess. liking the idea of custom door, it only has a narrow one at the moment but want to make a second so it has double doors on the end. glad to see its been done before me.
Liking the conduit idea, I still need to get it across our driveway though somehow so need to either have it up and over or down and embedded. will ponder some more, although I've been offered the loan of an angle grinder now so I won't even have to purchase one ;) will see, got to sort out the assembly tomorrow so will see how that goes.

Thanks for the post and link grinch, the pics are handy

Brett, if you wanted a felt roof to last you are better off with using felt adhesive than nails, just roller on the adhesive, then lay felt with at least 4-6 inch overlap.
Some felts arent suitable for adhesive though.

Ah ha! Key advice there! Will investigate tomorrow when we get the shell up. Thanks for that.
