Went into Lloyds saturday to deposit a cheque for £50 the RAC gave me for messing me about when my car broke down, When will it clear? i asked.
Well, lets see, today's saturday so.....Friday.
Five days for a cheque, really?
Well, no it's three days, it doesn't count as being posted till monday, so thats all day tuesday, all day wednesday and all day thursday, so it will clear for you friday.
What an absolute joke. :(
rant over.

cheques are a right PITA - cant wait for them to be made redundant!! i have a cheque for £4 and pennies from the dvla... i dont go to the bank.. and its really not worth it to make a special trip to bank it.. and by the time i probably do it will have expired:)
yeah, i'm gonna use that 5 day / 3 day scenario on my boss when he asks how long it will take me to do something.. can see that working a treat! lol

Cheques are rubbish, they should all be taken behind a van and shot.
With chip and pin / online money transfer / BACS etc, making a payment or transferring money is instant and takes a couple of clicks.
For me, using a cheque falls into a similar category as hoarding thousands of pounds in a book shelf. Total OAP tactic.

I don't think I've written a cheque for years, come to think about it, I get confused as to where the damn book is, its been so long since I used it.
I keep telling Pegleg the old git, that cheques are a pile o crap, that are extremely irritating, but the OAP that he is, he likes them:confused:
Any way,
Guaranteeing a cheque will no longer be possible after June, as cheques march towards 2018 extinction date
I say burn them all now!!

Not so much the clearance time but how quickly does it come OUT of your account??
The amount of money under"Clearance" at any one time must generate millions for the banking system.

Some retailers don't use cards because of the overheads of the dedicated line and the machinery. The kennels we use still asks for cash or cards for that reason.
I opened an ISA account at a high street bank two weeks ago - went in with ID and my debit card was told I would need a cheque to pay in my deposit... The muppet with the ill-fitting suit was not pleased when I laughed at him!

BACs takes 3 working days to clear unless each person's banks are on the faster payment scheme. It's an absolute joke!

I get paid by cheque quite often and it normally takes 5 days to clear. I paid in a cheque this afternoon and asked when it will clear to be told "immediately".

It takes the mick, there doesn't seem to be any consistency anywhere...
I've never had a cheque book.
It also depends on the account you pay it into.
for me, if I pay into my current account it 7 working days. If I pay it into my savings account it's 14 working days.

Probably because it was from another account with the same bank as yours.
No need to worry though, they'll be phased out completely within a couple more years.

But i've paid in cheques from the same bank as mine before and theyve taken a few days to clear.
Oh and nice bike in your avatar, I had one just like it ;)
