View Full Version : What do you do...
I spend most of my Monday's to Thursday nights in Lenny Henry's choice of hotel in various parts of the country and am finding it increasingly difficult to find things to do apart from work, read, fb, twitter, etc.
I was just wondering what others tend to do? I don't tend to visit with people because most of the places I work in I don't really know anyone. Sitting in the pub is not my thing unless by some chance one of my colleagues I actually have something in common with is in the same place.
Ride your bike.
And if you don't have a ladyfriend try and find one, or even better more than one...better still more than one on the same night ;-)

Dont get two birds, way to complicated, who the hell would want two of them, granted same night would be good :)
Two lots of moaning, two lots of mood swings, no thanks.
Seriously mate, I'd get another job cos that ain't no life to live IMO.
Get a psp and play that all the time, thats what I'd do.

Read more, study, learn, get more qualifications and move upwards or move onto another job, that's what I tell my staff. Not too good at following my own advice though.

Don't watch bikes on TV at the weekend sky+ em then copy them onto disc's then you can watch the races in peace and quiet in your hotel room. I'm now watching most of my racing fix during the week (I only laughed little at Max in the 2nd race at Monza last night :smt082:smt082:smt082:smt082)
Also means that your weekends are free for biking, oh and seeing the family, but biking mainly... this is a biking forum!!!
I don't envy you I only had to work away for 6 weeks and I was nearly in tears, it killed me...
Ha ha! You guys crack me up! The hotels we use have freeview soon discovery for me. As for bikes on discs...not gonna happen. I like watching live coz there are too many spoilers about on Facebook, twitter and such like.
At the moment I'm trying to work my way through a love Dan Brown novel.

Ahhh the luxury of being billy no mates. Down to the restaurant, "A table for one please."
I hated hotel/brothel living I dictated my resignation over the phone. So the company agreed to stop sending me to the other side of the world for months on end. Agro with expenses as to what I could and couldn't buy. Credit cards being refused because I hadn't been home for 3 months so hadn't seen any bills and work not paying the expenses unless they get the receipts. Cheeky buggers actually got a Chinese speaker to translate one lot to see if it matched my explanation.
Got to love hotel life.

I work in a prem inn and see the souless faces of the poor corporate gypsy travellers every day .. chat to the bar man or the breakfast server.. ask where is nice to walk or a park with ducks etc or a local cinema.. or anything of interest locally- there may be a bike meet you can walk to locally .. all prem inn have a big display in the reception with info in them.
prob is hotel life gets you so tired so quickly .. it is uber mundane.. I used to be away all the time with old job and hated it..
just get out for half hour walk and get some fresh air.. it makes a big difference.
+1 for quiff - I use to send myself out for walks at night - first things to note was decent bar, cinema, pool and other places of interest tho most of our stays were weeks as opposed to nights.
( alot of the time was spent buying clothes because of lost luggage)
I would ask for the posh area and walk round it, sit in the park and watch the world go by.
I loved bein in Plymouth - every night I was running along the front and in the lido. used to watch the ferries at night.
Distance learning is good or look for an online course that you can log into.
Now i take bits and pieces away with me and make up fascinators and designs for hats.

I started taking my guitar with me when the Fareham Holiday Inn started getting, well, samey after a few months... Got a few odd looks and a few complaints!
Was quite lucky in that a lot of the work guys were at the same hotel so was able to organise trips out to other restaurants some nights (knew the HI menu backwards - it only changed twice in the nine months I was there). Soon found some nice chippies on the coast nearby watching the boats on The Solent, mainly read though as tied of looking at a screen all day when not chasing people for (lack of) progress reports and I was there over the winter.
Only the odd short trip for me now - hoorah! Business travel sucks - you're either bored or very quickly sick of the sight of your constantly-with-you colleagues.
What vajazzle!! - hate the way that this now the fashion becasue of that Essex programme - us performers have been doing it for years!!
and now we have to look for something else becuase its seen as chavvy!
derail over
Ooh vajazzling... Theres an idea. Not. I did think about a hobby tbh but the thought of another bag in the car just doesn't gel with all the kit I have in the boot already.
Also, the thought of a course is intriguing but using a pc all day and then in the evening doesn't really excite me that much. But havIng said that, I am looking at doing my diploma soon so that may be an option. Right now though, a quick walk back to the car then a shower then bed. Na na night.

Well you wouldn't be vajazzling yourself would you? Travel round the country vajazzling women? Sounds like fantastic evening entertainment to me.
Run.
Oh Definately want to start. But I need to lose about another stone and a half so I don't damage my knees or other body parts when I do start.

If I had time I would go swiming, get some good food you sleep much better after exericse. I normally don't stay alone I'm normally with the rest of a crew which makes the experince a lot more fun. Though last time I was in hotel I was so tried, I was almost fell asleep eating dinner, who thinks 12 hour plus days is a good idea...

I used to spend lots of evenings in hotels and the temptation to work is very high. I gave this up a number of years ago and don't miss it, but may have to go back to it again.
I used to eat and sleep or work, hence 6 extra inches around the middle, high blood pressure and cholesterol [-X
Now though I play the bass, so this is what I will do if I have to go back, and according to the font of all knowledge that is Radio 2, playing an instrument makes you less stressed, and more cleverer, like wot I be
there are always the adult themed tv channels, like the History Channel or Nat Geo :smt082
SNAP! I am also a premier inn wh0re.
Endless nights spent in either a brewers fayre or beefeaters is rubbish, and curry night sucks to!
I have recently joined DW Sports Fitness gyms, they have gyms all over the country and they is pretty much always one within 30-40 mins drive, mp3 player on and before you know it three hours has shot by (travelling there and back included of course...).
Need to burn the handles off from all that lager drinking and the lovely rack of ribs...

Snap. One advantage of a Holiday Inn over a lodge is you often get a pool and sauna/steam room. To stop me working all day I would get back, go for a swim, call home, go have dinner, read, then sleepy time. The swimming helped stop me from putting on any weight, even after nine months. If I'm away for more than a couple of nights now I look for exercise options to kill the time and keep me sane(ish).

My previous employer used the Holiday Inn group and that was brilliant because aside from the pools and sauna/steam rooms, some of them also have gyms which are usually free to use if you're staying the night. Although the PI is good value, you don't get the extras... :(

Further to my posts in the 'long commute thread', the following all kept me going:
-a good gaming laptop, so you can play DECENT games during your imprisonment
-large quantities of beer... if there's no fridge in the room, get some ice and put it in the bathroom sink to chill it. Failing that, the toilet cistern.
-movies of naked girls putting plastic things up each other's various holes
-phone the missus, as you'll be surprised how knowing the distance is huge will make you feel lonely.
-use the facilities of the hotel... the one I was in had a gym so I'd go and use the equipment. Also, you know those chairs you see scattered at random around the hallways or in the lobby? Go and sit there and read.
A friend of mine is now in a similar situation and he brings his PS3 with him to ***** some trophies. Hooks it up to the TV in the room and everything.

I used to live on the internet, or try to find a hotel with a gym in it so that I could at least train during the week. Mostly though, I just chilled out and zoned out on the net!
I used to be a Jurys wh0re, In Exeter.
My life for 2 days everyweek would be - work, back to hotel, change, go find somewhere cheap to eat, back to hotel and on the net via 3g connection for the night or play some games on the ol laptop. Sometimes i took a few dvds with me and hooked the lappy to the tv. That's how I watched Avatar, in a Hotel room.

I've discovered something else to do. Greetings from the Crowne Plaza in Bratislava (Slovakia for those not sure, former Soviet Bloc country, and some of the architecture around here shows it...).
This place has something called a Club Lounge. It has nibbles and beer/wine/booze and it's all free! I may stay here for a while this evening. It has free wi-fi too. Much better than staying in my room on my own where the expensive mini-bar was calling me. Cheers all.
