View Full Version : Diesel Spills
Come on mighty org and give me your wit and wisdom
Looking at fuel spills today (road safety day for me today)
How many of you have come off because of a fuel spill.??
This can include spillages on petrol station forecourts - just want to get an idea of how bad it is for a wee bit of research
thank you in advance (for those going to the GM I'll make truffles)

havent come off the bike due to diesel spills .. but have done a 360° on a rooundabout in my car thanks to diesel on the road.. (was rather scary) pottering along at 20mph to allofasudden be looking at the bonnet of the car behind me! (no impact thankfully)

I done that in the car on a slip its frightening - well it was for me!!
naturally i voted keithd, but in actuality you can add me to the list of "near misses". damp road, roundabout (naturally) didnt see the hazy sheen til i was on it, i had a moment in my leathers. and not the good kind
Yay I'm happy now Keithd voted in my poll!!!
Skidded on the approach to a roundabout. The bike didn't stop at the giveway but thankfully there was a gap in the traffic which allowed me to have sex with the roundabout, i.e. I got the opportunity to mount it without formal introductions.

I crashed, M25 slip-road onto M4. Slight curve, 60-70mph, wet. Probably fuel

Diesel? Bit of wisdom, aye. Wit, only my wits-end where that stuff is concerned.:)
Usually get a sniff of the big spills, but got caught out one morning where I was already on top of it and the wheel just spun and kicked out.
Quiet 30 limit, downhill S-bend on a bus route. Ended up on the wrong side of the road at the kerb, cos there was no way I was going anywhere near the brakes! Getting it down a gear just locked the wheel up.
20 years in, still learning!
I have seen 2 mates go down stopping at traffic lights in the wet in the centre of their lane...always stained with oil etc. there. One of them still limps.
Stop it on the car "tracks". You'll get less punctures too.

I wish I had ! How I got through it and keep going is to this Day a mistery....

Been quite a few years ago but hit some spilled diesel in a bend right in front of a farm supply store and instantly the bike was on it's side and slid to the other side of the road and completely underneath an on coming lorry. (along with me)
I remember the bike going underneath the front axle (being detroyed) just inches away and thinking "this is it" as the axle approached my helmet.
Thankfully somehow the lorry managed to stop about 1 inch before hitting my visor!
Nearly shat myself. Scarriest moment on a bike ever.
Also the last time I wore sunglasses while riding.
Had been raining earlier and with shades on looked like just another wet spot on the road.
Thanks Guys
the more the merrier for my evil cunning plan!!

I keep an close eye out for diesel after almost ploughing into a roundabout on a test bike (Ducatti ST2) early on in my biking career. There was a gentle curve into the roundabout so I was on top of the spill before I saw it, didn't dare touch the brakes and managed to get off the diesel patch before slowing enough to avoid the island. There was a traffic cop parked up on the roundabout, so I did a circuit and told him about it and asked he cone off that lane until it was cleared.
Living in a rural area there is the additional hazard of leaking hydraulic fluid, which don't smell as much as diesel and is just as slippery. Often tractors can lose some hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic system on the back as the valves wear. [-X
Damp road, diesel, on a bend, to late to avoid. Jamed ont he back brake to scrub off speed, went down as gentle as i could. Reported it there and then to the police iirc. it was a while ago
