Righto, story so far

bought a 99 sv650s, tatty and needed a few things doing, cam chains, sprockets and chain, and rear tyre, for £750 at beginning of april.

Rode ok/well for a week, then got a front misfire cause of water on plug. Investigated, cracked it, got it running.

Changed clutch, cause discovered it needed doing

In process, broke oil pump gear.

Replaced.

(at the same time, got a fenda extenda and other bits totalling about £200)

Spend so far approx £1150

Went to ride to work, would start fine, but wouldn't drop into gear.

Didn't think enough, so dismantled engine (assuming that gear box was fooked). £50

Upon discovery of AOK gearbox, put back together-badly and broke a few bits.

Thought "sod it" and bought another engine £400.

Put in, got running, all good for 3 days.

Now won't start properly and has an almighty banging from front cylinder (i think), and don't like to run under 6-7k, need to really wind it back to get it to sound half decent.

Advice needed in so far as

a/ do i break it and try and recoup losses?

b/ repair myself (not feeling brave enough now)?

c/ garage repair, but i have no more money left....

d/ flog as a non runner with 90% spare engine included?

BIG question is, how much do people think i'd get for options a/ and d/?

AND is it worthwhile to wait and repair? Anyone got ideas on how much labour time it would take for professional rebuild? Even a rough idea?

I am so sick of this bloody bike, and don't want to give it up, but am at my wits end, and the wife is somewhat un-amused too!

Please help/advise me guys, i'm so lost now and am half thinkin of torching the bloody thing (joke)........
.................(half joke)........

Do you know what's up with the two engines? What's the symptoms?

For a non-runner with 2 buggered engines I think you'd be lucky to get £300-£400 if the right buyer came along. You could maybe get more if you break it, especially if the bodywork/tank is in good order and a popular colour. But it's a lot of work just posting all the stuff and, no offence, but your record of keeping parts intact doesn't seem great. ;)

i ain't arguin with that mate. I just can't work out what's gone wrong with it. It turned out the 1st engine was locking up because the front sprocket wasn't tight and the out put shaft was locking up. If ONLY i'd tightened up the nut, then everything would have been fine! Bodywork ok, fairings tatty (previous owner dropped), in black. Dunno how popular it makes it cause of this. Really wanna get it working again, cause it's such a nice bike to ride, but am so short on funds. Can save some dough to get engine fixed perhaps, but need to get an idea on how much that might be. How do bike garages work these days, if u can't pay stright away, do majority let you pay in installments for work done then get bike back when paid?

I doubt it, get a quote from garage, or get it examined.

What have you broken on the original engine, given that you are at least starting from a know quality, you may be better getting that sorted (depending on what you broke)

upon rebuild, broke exhaust port on front rocker, front piston rings and few other bits. Would go this route, and get a good engine from 2 bad, but am so scared of fooking somthing up again, i'd rather not try it in the first place. Know what ur sayin tho......

As its a Twin could you not make a decent engine from the two dodgy ones ?

not trying to be anti suzuki as i own 4 of them but buy a honda they are far more reliable and better build quality, and leave the spanner work to some one else, but you already know that, buying second hand sv motors is a minefield because the main reason they are on ebay is that they are already feked and you are buying someone elses cast off,and unless you can get some one to work wonders with your sv it looks like there will be two more engines on ebay that arent worth more than scrap, hope you find a easy repair for you old sv

if your the gent in mk who brought the engine off my mate i would think the engine is not the problem as i can vouch for it being a good runner as just before he was knocked off it had been to IOM and was running sweet, maybe check the spark plug connection on the front cylinder as thats easily knocked and works lose when the engines moved about,if the bikes been stood the carbs are probably full of rubbish and as it was running well for 3 days i would say that would not be the engine and needing to rev it would mean no juice on one of the cylinders, just a thought

just to update you all guys, took to garage locally yesterday (well, they picked it up). Seems that the knocking is my starter clutch on it's last legs, and the lack of running is to do with me breather hoses. £50 and it was all sorted, and now runs like a dream! Thanks fok.
