View Full Version : Identifying what my bike is exactly?

I have had a curvy since 2009, but I broke it last year by letting the oil evaporate and well, the big ends are a little slack :(

So I have stripped the engine down and whilst I am at it, got a new rear spring and looking at updating the front suspension with some nice mods too.

Going through the book, it says my front forks should not have pre-tensioners, but it does, according to the Haynes manual these didn't come onto the bike till 2002 and mine is a 2000 model. Looking further into this, the frame number (compared in the Haynes Manual) starts with JS1AV133200, which is clearly for the naked bike, mine has fairing [-X

Should I be worried about this sort of thing, is it a likely modification or have I bought a dud?

I didn't check to see if the bike had ever been a Cat D / Cat C write-off when I bought it, if it turns out it was, would I be able to seek recompense :smt071 from the previous owner, especially as it has been 2 years now?

Run a check on it and see what comes up. Is it registered as an "S" on the V5?

Converting a naked to S spec is not a common mod, but it's possible.

The preload adjusters could just be a retrofit upgrade. You never know, there might be more goodies inside the forks. :D

Nope, It is registered as a SV 650 Y :elephant:

Cat C or D means nothing, they get written off for damage you could do with a fairly vigorous fart.

A private seller has no duty to disclose that and pretty much anyone who gives a receipt will put "sold as seen with no warranty given or implied" etc. on it. So you can't do much, not that you should have need to if it was written off.

If engine and frame number check out OK, the logbook came back from DVLA without issue then be right, nothing to worry about.

And if theyve done that, whats the rear shock, just a standard one?

It's an 11 year old SV650 that has had some things done to it. Eleven years is a bloody long time and alot happens to a bike when it's had a few owners and done a few miles so stop analysing it and just ride the damn thing and just be happy you own one.

Was having a moment of paranoia :toss: I am happy with the SV or would be if I was able to ride it. I will try and keep the org updated on my progress and let the locals know when I am ready to join the community on the actual road :makelurve:
