OK this is a weird one ......... I went to a job last night which involved me staying in a confined space with a really gut wrenching smell and I was there for 3 hours plus.

I dont want to go into details but is there anything that I can carry around in my kit bag on the market that I can put under my nose to help me stomach disguisting smells to stop me heaving.

Silly I know, someone told me to try Vicks Vabour Rub but I figured that would open up my nasal passage and make the smell seem worse.

See told you it was stupid. :stupid:

Vaseline across the nostrils. Think my wife has done it before - possibly on jobs similar to yours

Prevention is better than cure Shell, cut down your intake of raisens, guinness and curry...

DO NOT TRY VICKS VAPO RUB!! It does indeed open the passages....

To be honest, nothing I have tried works. It's hard not to spew sometimes!

I assume a Clothes peg would be a little indiscreet, so try Vaseline I used it in a former life once while I was installing phones in an OAP home, downside is that you will look like you have a snotty nose.

yes but carry a disposable dust mask and rub it on the front and you will probably find that helps, I know of a mortuary tech that does it..

Take one of Chris8886's used socks along. The smell of those will probably cover up any other stench - though not in a good way perhaps.

One of those decorator's filter masks with essential oils sprinkled inside? Swimmer's noseplugs? One of these?:

Transfer to Traffic.

At least the bodies I deal with are fresh!

Can't help in reality, it's just one of those smells hardwired into Humans that is disgusting and repulsive.

Hugs.

You need to be a bit careful about masking smells with other smells- think about the traditional can of air freshener in the loo.

Frinstance, imagine it's pine scented.

Keep using it and you'll associate the worst smells of the loo with pine- so anywhere you smell pine (commonly used in cleaning products and in forests too), you'll also think of (and probably psychologically smell) s**t.

If only there was a Neutradol nasal spray, eh? :)

The only way I ever got near anything like that was using Vapo Rub smeared into a mask , it may open up the nasal passages but it can help you deal with it for a short time . The stench of death will stay in your nostrils though and is a smell you will never forget . The smell also clings to your clothing and anything that is in the vicinity of it .

I work at a company that manufactures health and safety equipment. We have various sets of respiratory gear, from filtration units to positive fresh air supply. http://www.centurionsafety.co.uk/

Is what this thread is about the stench of death for three hours? Jeez no wonder Police are grumpy buggers.

I used to have the same thing with a ex, Angela Hansford, she worked in a Chippy, no matter she did she couldn't get rid of the smell of chip fat, none of my mates would go near her, but me I liked chips and she had big boobies.

It's bad enough when the "death" smell is only a few hours....or days...its not so fun when it's a few weeks or months old though...

And yes, 3 hours is about the average time you would spend at something like that.

I was there over 3 hours I just realised and guess what house I had to search on todays shift. All enclosed doors internally shut by muggings here......went to work on bike head all cleared, within an hour I was heaving again.

Took a colleague who stood it for 5 mins. Now I wished I went shopping before work lol
Masks etc aren't really an option, gotta be discrete.

Asda on the way to work tomorrow and I have cancelled the Chinese I promised myself.

Badger, u not wrong about the clothes thing.

I don't envy your task, and I appreciated the job our police do,

However I cant understand why you cant wear masks, it has got to be a health & Safety thing surely?

Imagine having to call police cause a family member or friend has died, then they turn up in mask.

A lot if the times we don't know what we got til we go in, family outside. we have to be professional and stay in doing what we gotta do. For me I try and make it as easy on fault as possible so something like vaseline in pocket woyld be ideal, discrete and would help me out.

reminds me of the story of the bikes paramedic turning up to a heart attack after being at a childrens party. It was only when he leant forward fo CPR that the santa hat fell off.

I think a mask would be more "sensitive" than walking in and throwing up all over the rellies?
Still,if you must do it that way can I suggest a good bean curry beforehand so it rises well and spreads easily?

Bit of a sick subject really.

most of us manage not to throw up....and normally if the stench is that bad, the rellies won't be standing in it so if we get dry boaks, they don't see us...

To be honest, it wouldn't bother me, at the end of the day its about health and safety in the work place on some level.

I wouldn't expect anyone, police or not to have to be around that kind of smell for any longer than is A needed and B to protect yourselves whilst your there.

I'm possibly an odd one out but its my opinion.

We are told to not breathe through your nose, but open your mouth and breath and just crack on

Ive come close a couple of times, the dry heaves have reached busting point, and one of those was on an resus in the street on a very smelly person, all 3 of us were dry heaving as we worked on this old guy, to make it worse it was a hot day and we were approx 9 mins from hospital.

That smell stayed in the ambulance fro the rest of the shift.

i've had one where the deceased had lost her best friend about four weeks prior, decided that she couldn't cope and took her own life, od'd on pills in her bedroom in the middle of summer with the window open, we found her about 3 weeks later badly decomping, gave the guys a hand lifting the body into the bag and her shoes came away from her body-with the feet still in them-horrendous smell, never ate for a few days and the uniform jacket i had on got binned.

Shell I can understand how you feel. When I am on the amblemence doing First Response and we attend a house that has a body or the house is very smelly i always think it would be very unprofessional to throw up in front of the people in the house.

I have the weakest stomach when it comes to smells and i always give a little involuntary cough more like a gag reflex when i first go in the house.

i carry a vicks inhaler in my pocket as it is only the size of a lipsal and can be used discreetly. yes it does open the nasal passage a little bit but it does help to disguise the rotten smell.

getting the smell out of your clothes is more difficult.

I knocked on a guys flat yesterday and even though I was a good 4 feet from the door behind a gate thing when I was chatting to him, the smell of urine and ammonia coming out actually made my eyes water. I was standing there thinking how can you not smell this??

Not far off what I just dealt with ........days later I still can't get this image from my head and the smell, well its still with me.

Jinxy, would have breathed thru my mouth but I was more conscious about swallowing the flies that had been having a good feed. Got bit loads that was bad enough.

As far as clothes go the only thing I can recommend to get rid of the smell is to use an Enzyme based powder in the wash . This would mean going out and buying a Bilogical powder for this use only . The Enzymes will attack the molecules that are creating the smell . I also suggest not to use the Tumble Dryer to dry these afterwards as you can lock the smell onto the clothing sometimes . I have been up to my waist in water that contained something that used to be a Human Being ..... pretty unpleasant <--- says he forking a mouthfull of Chilli into his gob and grinning .

Foot note : The injections afterwards were also rather unpleasant too

Shelly,
If you watch silence of the lambs, when agent stapling goes to see her first autopsy, the guy gives her some stuff to put under her more for the smell. Can't remember what he says it is but you could watch the film and see what he calls it. :-)
