Just a quick question... Where`s a good place to get semi decent tools from? in particular Spanners & a ratchet / socket set.

I've seen quite a few people on here recommend Halfords Professional tools. Apparently they're of good quality and have a life time guarantee.

I'm sure others will be along soon to either back this up or suggest other alternatives :)

if you are a member of costco have a look at the cresent tool kit. They have a lifetime guarantee backed up by decent returns policy

Silverline tools are decent you can get them from Toolstation, all hand tools are guaranteed forever, you have to register each online. I have a fair few and had no probs, very affordable too, got tap and die set and an easy out set for less than a tenner.

Silverline good and cheap
Draper are also decent
Clarke Tools are as good as halfords and are cheaper

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Most of my stuff is decent well known makes, Snap On, Britool, Teng etc. However for sockets/sets these days I advise people to look at Bahco, well made and good quality.

I use clarke & draper - got 'em from machine mart. much cheaper than halfords, although mechanics I know do prefer halfords. Mine are doing me well though.

buy the best quality you can - it will pay dividends long term. I sell AST (UK company) tools here in Spain and they are guaranteed for life for professional use. AST do not sell direct to end users in UK but I can PM me if you wish...

Halfords Pro is what I use.

Good quality, easy to get, lifetime guarantee.

If your starting out they do some good tool sets to get you started and are normally on an offer, checkout their website...

I think some people claim Halfords tools are just rebranded snap-on ones. If you go with Halfords, only buy them if they're on sale such as 1/2 price at the time as they're always on offer.

After a large socket set myself, just not settled on one yet. Let us know what you go for and what it's like.

Clarke do a pro range which are guaranteed for life, I have loads of their sockets and spammers and haven't had one single failure which is amazing cos they get a hard life from me.
Britool on the other hand, every ratchet driver I've had of theirs has broke :(

For the average diy'er snap on tools don't make economic sense, they won't get used enough to justify the cost.
Won't go far wrong with Clarke sockets etc IMO.

You can get some decent Teng tool kits for not too much money, don't buy them individually as they work out expensive as fook but the kits can be good value for money.

I have a few very good make tools (snap-on, britool and such) but I use a 12 year old Halfords pro set most of the time, it's well good enough for most jobs and as sometimes happens with any tools it breaks the lifetime warrenty requires nothing more than popping in to the branch down the road and getting an impedient replacement, rather than sending it away, this means I can finish the job I was using it for as apposed to having to wait of buy a new one.

On the bike I have the small 3/8 drive Teng kit, which is very robust and has served me well when needed, also it provides the one thing the halford kit is lacking as it has 6 sided sockets.

Worth noting that the guarantee on halfrauds ratchets doesn't cover the ratchet mechanism, also I think the sockets are the splined type - not 6 sided. They're still good I just wouldn't let the lifetime guarantee let it swing it for me as how often to you snap a ratchet (...well unless your ratchet mechanism's worn out and you want to try it on with the guarantee ;) )

I see your point, however their breaker bar is covered and most of the time busted ratchets are damaged but people using them instead of one, I use my tool far more than most and haven't broken any on the original 3 ratchets in the set yet, the lack of 6 sided sockets can be an issue on older more worn or abused bolt/nuts, but then I would presume you'd check them first and hopefully replace any that needed it.

Cheers Mark

I can personally vouch for this particular set. I fitted a passenger lift without a hammer and this ratchet doubled as my hammer for 3 weeks and showed no ill effect from it!

Very, very robust!:-D

Teng tools are brilliant quality but are ever so slightly cheaper than Snap on.
Loose tools are pricey. I paid £16 for 1/2" 10mm deep socket and 4" wobble bar.

Halfords Pro tools are rebranded Silverline or draper tools to my knowledge.

Halfords pro for me, just happen to have some brand new stuff I'm selling.

Halfords do have the 6 sided sockets in various size drives, but are mainly deep sockets and only a couple appear in the big sets. As for the ratchets, yep apparently its not covered but they didn't question it when I took a ratchet back that had rusted as I accidentally left it outside...
