i have had a "sensitive" tooth for a while now, i went to the dentist at work (army) and it turns out i have a cracked tooth right up to the root, now i need 2 lots of root canal and a cap (going to try and get a gold one) my question is does anyone know how much this would cost if i got it done elsewhere?

I was quoted on NHS at £195 for a cap. Not sure how much private would be, probably more!

well my gf works at a private dentist and she has said that it would need an extraction if its fractured all the way to the root

as its private, her surgery would charge £400 for the root canal and £600 for the crown.

her boss has a lovely car.... haha

he has told me it goes up to the bottom of the root ie the nearest part to the outside of the tooth (if that makes sense), how long does a cap last too, i only have 3 years left in the army and i dont want lots of bills replacing a cap

all dentists do a different guarantee, NHS should be a lifetime but in the real world they usually last about 10 years ish.

i hope the gold one is free cos i believe it lasts longer

I don't have any luck with crowns, they normally go in about 3 months. My dentist has given up doing them for me.

Have it whipped out and an implanted fitted. If the army wont cover that, just get it bridged.

I have cracks in four of my molars, all the same ones each side top and bottom. Dentist doesn't wanna take them out until they're really bugging me because he said they'll keep needing to be replaced over my lifetime and it's best to keep my one's for as long as possible, so this thread is of interest to me too :)

Obviously, these things are case by case. Back in 79 I cracked a tooth that required some work then had a crown placed on top. That crown eventually gave up the ghost in 2008 whereupon I required some root canal work and a new crown.
I joined the RN in 77, I leave in 2012, probably...I would suggest that you make use of the Army dental facilities whilst you've got them - that's what they're there for. My personal experience with RN dental facilites (with some of the surgeons not always drawn from RN sources) has, I have to say, been very positive.
I will doubtless miss this benefit severly as I gnaw my way into old age with ever crumbling gnashers.:cyclopsani:

for the sake of a bit of bling in your mouth that nobody will see just get the tooth removed!

i had root canal treatment a couple of years ago by a very nice and very pretty RAF dentist. lying there looking up into her amazing blue eyes was enough to make me want to go back for regular check ups and i didn't mind her poking about in my mouth......until the evil bitch inflicted the worst pain i have ever had in my life.

root canal treatment ....never again.....i'd rather have my nuts put into a vice and tightened til i pass out than go through that again!

I had a Root Canal done a couple of years ago and a Porcelain cap fitted and it came to £175 . I wouldn`t go with the Gold fitting as it can actually cause Halitosis . The Porcelain felt weird at first but it has worn in now and feels just like the tooth that had cracked away . I got a Mountain Bike trail wrong and crunched my handsome mug into something hard and the tooth virtually squeeked then exploded . It wasn`t tender or anything for ages then one day I was brushing my choppers and felt a small amount of pain . I went in and they sorted the pain out and booked me in for a Root Canal and a fitting . To be honest I did not find the work to be unpleasant , some people have a bad one and some have a good one . I just lie back , knit my fingers together and relax . The work takes about 20 minutes , of which about 10 of that is actually spent in the gob I reckon . I had a really attractive Dental Nurse as well which made it better , the Dentist was ok herself but REALLY pregnant , I`m sure something pinched my face when she was leaning against me .

Despatches did a very interesting investigation into NHS dentists and showed that they try and pretend they cannot do root canal work on the NHS and then pob you off getting it done by them privately at a cost of £600+. That is rubbish. It's £204.

This is a monthly payment that covers all work except any lab work. I had a crown down and a root filling a while back and the whole kit n kaboodle would have cost me the best part of 800 quid!!!!!! I had to pay the 70 lab fee, but that was it.

I had 2 fillings this morning. Again, this would have been in the region of £100!

If you have poor teeth, then look at getting some decent dental insurance

One of them is over 20 years old. Its had to be pinned back on as the tooth underneath broke but the crown is still ok.

Had a crown and it cost me £60 though it didn't last as the tooth crumbled underneath it.
Root canal done in two teeth both times were more than fine and no problems
Hated the extraction of the crumbled tooth that felt so wong and the filing of a decent tooth to work out my bridge for said extracted tooth

bridge and falsie cost me £170 all in which wasn't too bad

funny you should say that.. just had a filling (first - not bad for 35 yr old) and he tried to tell me that NHS wouldnt do it.. lie! also wanted a cap replaced on my front tooth (chipped it), and he tried to tell me that NHS dont do white ones ie go private... he then, when i said no thanks i will have NHS, decided that it didnt need doing...

My jaw now feels like it had a meeting with 'arrys 'ammer.

not a great dentist!

im sure with dental insurance you need a check up first and then given the all clear before anywork can be carried out against that insurance. So any fillings etc that need doing have to be sorted before hand
