I need your opinions on this please. Vertical or horizontal? :)
If they're horizontal they'll be mounted to fork clamps, if they're vertical I'm thinking of mounting them to the stock frame mounts so they wouldn't turn with the bars.
I'm still making the rear plastics and they've still to be painted. Possibly the same silver as the tank/fairings. And no they won't be held together with tie wraps ;)

The angel eyes can be used as parking lights, but since the headlights can't be turned off on pointys it doesn't really matter anyway :)

Horizontal mate.
Vertical looks naff

horizontal looks best, and if they will then turn with the bars then win win.

Vertical, mounted on fairing bracket mounts. So long as you can make nice neat mounts.
Just because every crashed sportsbike in the world ends up with horizontal twin lamps mounted to forks. And it is more to mess with when you have to take forks out.

Vertical suits the 'street' look of your bike. In that position the clocks dont 'stand out' so much as they sorta blend with the lights better. Me likey.
EDIT; top one set back slightly further than the bottom one to flow with fork angle...

6 for vertical and 6 for horizontal :)
I think I prefer vertical for the same reasons as Amplimator. It fills the gap under the clocks and it should look quite neat with nothing mounted on the forks.

Wont you have a narrower field of view with them vertical, ie not as wide a fan of light?
DarrenSV650S
30-05-11, 12:50 PM
No way, these things are ridiculously bright. I could just have one and it would still be 20 times brighter than the dominators. And the beam pattern is perfect
Vertical, to be individual :0)

think you missed the point Darren. If you have two on top of each other, they may burn the curtains of granny down the road with their epic brightness, but if they only light up a bicycles width, they're a bit ****.
On the other hand if they are side by side, you'll burn her whole window through....
You could have four like Peg, not only burn one set of curtains, but four. Bright as hell, four in a row, six with all of them on, lights up two carriageways, thats the one your on, and the one in the opposite direction. On a motorway.
So with that in mind. I go the right way up, horizontal
yorkie_chris
30-05-11, 02:56 PM
Well think about what causes beam patterns to go way they do. That 4" difference will make no difference, it is direction light comes out of lamp that is going to make difference.

Na I knew what he meant. I tried out one single HID when I got them and its beam pattern and overall spread completely drowned out the two little yellow dots from the dominators. The spread from the projector lens is really wide. Having them side by side wont make any noticeable difference
I might get some pics to show the difference between them
horizontal - but right up under the clocks

I've been busy making up trial brackets. Started with cardboard and I'm now using 1mm steel. I've bought some 3mm aluminium for the final design
I've been trying to get the lights as close to the forks as possible. And trying to get the bracket looking good too. I think I've just about got it. Just need to tidy up the part that bolts to the frame slightly and maybe round a few of the corners off, then I'll start on the aluminium ones.
Some of the failed designs.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k164/DarrenStewartTait/c5fc0c1e.jpg
I bolted them to the latest bracket I made today. Obviously it will have a bracket at each side when it's finished
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k164/DarrenStewartTait/0acfc51d.jpg
Still to do...
mount the ballasts under the tank
shorten and rewire the control wiring because it's designed for a car
spray the light plastics
seal the hid's
get the rear covers for the plastics
wire up the 6 core flex for each light

Does look good sir! I personally think the bottom light is a few cm too far out though but I guess that's personal preference. I'm pleased you went with vertical :)

I know what you mean. Still not decided about that. At the moment both lights are the same distance from the forks but the bottom one looks further out because there's nothing behind it
andrewsmith

I'd defo pull the bottom one back. looks good mate
DarrenSV650S
05-06-11, 09:14 PM
Just been looking at it and I'm gonna try taking the bracket straight down for the bottom light. Should be ok for clearance, just might need to get a P clip to keep the left brake line in position cos there wont be much room behind the bracket on full left lock
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k164/DarrenStewartTait/246d2498.jpg
Possibly a daft question and off topic, but what are you doing about indicators?
I'm inclined to say rather than moving the bottom light back, to move the top one forward - it looks to me like there is a parallel line to the forks running off the clocks and through the front upper corners as we're looking at it.
DarrenSV650S
05-06-11, 09:56 PM
I see what you mean about the line but I really want them as close in to the forks as possible. Bringing the bottom one back will bring them in line with the clocks, although they wont be parallel with the forks any more. But bringing the top one forward would mean they weren't parallel anyway.
Haven't decided about the indicators yet. See the hole on the radiator bracket, I've been looking at mounting them using that hole and the bolt on the left side, but it means the indicator would be sitting over the filler cap. I could make a small bracket to bring them behind the cap.
Or I might get away with some short indicators on the headlight bracket. Still thinking.... :)

As you are considering straightening the lower part of the bracket i would do the same for the top. This would keep the lights parallel with the forks but give a much 'tighter' finish.
Looks like the top one would just squeeze in!
As for the indies on the rad, a 'Z' shaped bracket on the top side bolt would put the indies slightly behind the rad thus hiding the wires behind the rad going up/under the frame.
Superb handy work there, so good in fact when you have finished i have a couple of indie brackets need making, will send my bike up to you for a couple of weeks :p

Na that's as close as the top one can go before it starts interfering with the throttle, clutch and speedo cables.
Indi's are sorted. Should have them fitted in a day or two once the glue has dried 8-[

Yeh deffo looks better
I made the two aluminium brackets today. Straightened out the bottom leg and brought it up 5mm. It's really tricky getting the two brackets exactly the same size and all the mounting holes in exactly the same place. Aluminium is nice and easy to file down though :p

I'm really happy with how they look. Just need to sand and polish the brackets once I've got the final shape sorted.
I picked up some glue and clear silicone today to seal up the lights. And got some fine wet and dry for the painting. Also ordered the rear plastic caps and some lower profile bolts for the hid mounts.
looking good Daz.

But yeh my mileage this year has been poor so far. Im so happy its back on the road now :D
That looks great Darren. Love the lights.
Good idea putting the indies in the frame - worked out well.
The HID's are probably a lot better in a projector lamp assembly. The ones on My curvey SV in the normal light unit are great, but therere is a lot of light leakage.
You've done a really really good job there mate. If that was black it would be perfect :)
