well im doing a bit of work for on of my gf's work colleague just general bike maintenance but hes said that i can take his bike for a ride well his bikes a 09 r1 with cross plain crank would love to own one....
now when he first said ride i though just round the block maybe sort of thing, but no hes said i can take it on a track day.
now iv never been on a track before would it be totaly stupid to take the r1 (got less than 2k on the clock) i think id have to get insurance for it some how
so do you think i should take it or am i just going to kill my self
and where can i get track day insurance ?

In short yes, whole lot of bike if your used to the SV and to have fun on it you will push and push. Yeah if you have deep pockets.

thats what i thought might see if he lets me go for a spin on it instead
bit of a step up though 85bhp to 179bhp (without ram air)
Dont do it! I have seen soooooooo many shineys all smashed up by people on there first track day on there very new bikes. Dont bother with track day insurance costs soooooooo much its insane, just ride the track on something you dont mind binning whilst you learn
Track riding is way different to road riding
Not a chance, when you start talking about bikes that cost £10K+ it's not worth having a go on it unless it's in a dealer... and it's defo not worth letting someone have a go if it's your own bike.
I personally think he's a bit nuts.

think its because he's paid to much :/ lol
When I went from my CBR600RR to my R1 it was a big step up in terms of power and speed. SV to R1 on a track would be a bit crazy.

ahh only 2 years until i can test ride bikes ..... cant wait :D lol
Don't do it. He might be willing to let you use it and nicey nice now, but if you do spill I reckon it'd be a different story!
I never see point in using an unfamiliar bike on track tbh.

Wouldn't be so sure on that. Some garages say 25 now.

Personally I wouldn't. For a start you'll look like a girl riding a fast bike very slowly.
If you do fancy it then make sure he knows there's no way you can afford it, it won't be insured and if you bin it he gets to keep yours and you keep the wrecked R1 or some sort of arrangement like that. If he says "yeah fine I'll just buy another" he's obviously nuts but be sure to discuss these possibilities first.

What YC said. I don't think you'd crash more like just crap yourself and pootle around, would be a waste of a day. I went from my sv when I was 33bhp to an 08 R1 a fair few times and the first few were dodge but it soon got very fun indeed

How about a nice straight section of your local dual carriage-way? You gotta have a feeeeeeeeel!!!!
i'd love to be let loose on an R1, but everyone here is right, you (just like me but probably faster) would look like a right tool being overtaken by everyone until a straight bit lol

Having crashed someone else's pride and joy (not my fault), I'd say thanks for the offer, but no thanks
Its a big step

The SV is more like 69Hp isnt it?
Also, 25 to test ride? As far as im aware it was 21 with 1 years full license?
If in the event you take him up on his offer, be ruddy careful! :D

the bikes modded, on a slightly derailish note - what's your top end like at 85bhp barwell? Is it more useable and are you getting a higher top speed than standard?

Even if you got trackday insurance, you'd have a hoooooge excess which
Is gonna suck.

Firstly give him a slap for only having 2k miles on a 2009 bike and then politely decline the R1 for the track day. That's a hellish bike a massive risk to take if you are not used to the power of that kind of machine. Take it for a spin on the road but not a thrash on the track.
I think 25 is right, you'd have your work cut out trying to get a drive of a Ferrari or similar at <25 and most of them can't scratch what the litre bikes can do!

Meh, I rode a whole host of superbikes at the age of 22 and never had an issue. I now have a gsxr750 at 23 and still (touch wood) have not had an issue. Age makes no difference in my opinion, just practice.

yeh stock sv is 69bhp mines got forged pistons, higer comp, cam's,inlet trumpets ect ..
Dave, erm top ends about 128mph at the redline down gear'd one tooth on the front, will do 112 in 5th fairly quickly 0-60 is fun but hard to keep the front down in 1st and 2nd
power is very snatchy to me feels more like a il4 than it did before
defo needs a remap and a full system and bored TB's lol
the biggest problem i have is aero or lack off i can get 5mph+ more top end from lying on the tank so can only imagine with some decent fairings the top end would be even better
id say the bikes accelerates fast up to about 110-115
another thing to note is that im a fat get so that dosn't help
PS speeds are all true speeds not over inflated EGO speeds given by the standard clocks
annnnnnnyyyyy way back on track lol
yeh decided its a stupid idea but might take it for a ride round the block just to scare my self and stop me looking at r1's and zx12r's to buy :D
Do it, it will be awesome!
What's the worst that could happen?? Nothing worse than what could happen on the road.
Don't ride like a knob and you'll be fine
Isn't a track day all about riding like a knob, relative to the road that is?

I rode like a saint on the track compared to road :D

No it's about going as fast as possible. Which as that's what the track is there for, isn't kn*bbish at all!

take it out, throw it down a track, loose a mate. after all he wasnt much of a mate was he?

Well you didn't say which bit was related, the knobbishness or the pace?
But anyway lots of people do trackdays just to enjoy smooth and fairly relaxed cornering without the worry of stuff coming the other way. Not all nutters :)
I wouldn't want to do a TD on a new to me R1, it would be a massive learning curve and a great experience but a waste of a trackday. Every corner on a trackday you take at less than 100% feels like a waste.
barwel1992

^ i think the only thing id be good at on a r1 is going past every thing in a straight line, then get over taken on the corners then go past again so on so forth lol

Nowt wrong with that. It's what I do.
Even though my bike is worth a fifth of that R1 it's still more than I can afford to replace so I even on the track I ride at 80%. I don't care, it's not a race and I still enjoy myself much more than road riding.

Yep but you're not every <25 year old. There are a lot of idiots
