View Full Version : GM Route advice

Well, the GM will be one of the (if not the) longest distances I would have done, and being not very well travelled except locally, I am after some advice.

I know its mostly Mway's, and as much as I'd like scratch round some twisties, I'd like to get there before Xmas next year and not get lost, so its a tradeoff I'm going to have to make.

Planning on an leaving Thursday afternoon, overnight stay at Scotch Corner, rest of the way on Friday.

GoogleMaps:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=harlow&daddr=Richmond+DL10+5EQ+to:FK21+8TY&hl=en&geocode=Fc8LFgMd1bIBACnFlZzqmJDYRzGQFr-OusXrvg%3BFWF9PgMdfI3m_ylx3lZIi59-SDEWn0gqAQdkSQ%3BFe0GXgMdUiS__ynffrjHKMCISDHA6torX SBA6Q&mra=ls&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=14.149238,39.506836&ie=UTF8&z=6

Just wondering if any part of the route should be avoided at all costs, barring incidents on the day (massive roadworks, traffic jam hot spot, speed camera hot spots, etc)

Any advice welcome.

Prolly be same on the way back.

Made a change to your route, instead of going over the really boring A66 from Scotch Corner, follow the A1(m) north for a couple of miles and come off onto the A68, follow the A68 until the roundabout with the A689 and follow this to Alston, following the A689 onto Brampton - if this route doesn't put a smile 9feet wide acros your face then you have my permission to shoot me............................

Damn, my change to the route in your linky still only comes up with your route, I'll have another go, but the A66 is usually busy & a bit boring........................

I'm sad I like the A66 on the bike proll because I normally go over it in the car

Make sure you wave to me as you approach Old Inns Services on the A80 - or stop off for tea - I'm only up the hill!!

this would be my preferred route:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=harlow&daddr=Richmond+DL10+5EQ+to:54.79589,-1.85584+to:55.16682,-2.15851+to:55.51454,-2.846+to:56.22758,-3.69386+to:FK21+8TY&geocode=Fc8LFgMd1bIBACnFlZzqmJDYRzGQFr-OusXrvg%3BFWF9PgMdfI3m_ylx3lZIi59-SDEWn0gqAQdkSQ%3BFXIeRAMdoK7j_ymFvnKuONN9SDGQay_Nn vkMEw%3BFWTHSQMdUhDf_yktIjKrH-t9SDExpRFRN9EPEw%3BFawVTwMd0JLU_ym5utLZVoaHSDGxCSD iGWgMEw%3BFfz2WQMd3KLH_ylxHbg__YGISDGR8IHcGWgMEw%3 BFe0GXgMdUiS__ynffrjHKMCISDHA6torXSBA6Q&hl=en&mra=dvme&mrsp=5&sz=9&via=2,3,4,5&sll=56.154729,-2.8125&sspn=1.118221,3.56781&ie=UTF8&ll=55.587659,-2.91687&spn=2.269418,7.13562&z=8

what ever you do don't take the A68 or the A1 after the border. if i know what sorta time you are planning on arriving in kilt land and where i could be tempted to come and get you and give you some company.

take lots of breaks on the way up the motorway from down south. you are in no hurry so make a day of it, don't go up with the attitude that 'i just have to get there'. even take time out from the MW to go see some sights, this will relieve some of the tediousness of the journey. you have all day so use it.

hongman
02-06-11, 01:45 PM
Thanks bib.

Where in kiltland officially constitutes me arriving in kiltland? :) I'll do my best to let you know the day before or on the day depending on what time I leave.

I tend to ride and drive with a "I just need to get there" attitude, I find if I stop off for no other reason than to take a break I get bored within 5 mins and just go again.

Having said that, in the car its comfy...I'm sure my **** will be screaming at me to have a rest after a few hundred :D

well you see there is an invisible line roughly around the area of the river tweed marked with signage of welcome. from there on you will find that everything gets much more relaxed and nice pretty scenery. from this point onwards you must show your passport and bribe the control officer with some sort of alcoholic beverage to gain access to this splendid domain. the said officer would of course be myself :-)

hongman

I expect you waiting for me at the border if I do come solo :D

Alcoholic beverage would depend on how much space I have left :D

Don't! I'm in f***ing agony 'cos I took that attitude on a 320 mile trip home from Belfast two weeks ago. There's no improvement and I've decided tomorrow I'm going to have to see a doctor about it (it's not often you get me in front of a doctor).

I thought my helmet was to blame, but the people in this thread are probably right, it's my stubborness, not my helmet.

http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=166894

I have the GM in a few weeks, and a trip to Portugal by bike in August, I'm now worried that this shoulder problem is going to affect them both! I've certainly not been fit to ride a bike in the last two weeks.

PS: I have ridden Birmingham to Scotland twice, both staying off the motorways and taking the scenic route. It takes about 12 hours. Doing it from London and having an overnight stop at Scotch corner, you could take the scenic route easily if that's what took your fancy.

12 hours is insane! Longest iv been on a bike non stop
Was the AR (although I was real fresh then, and sporting a wrist injury).

Well see how I feel on the day. I'll try my best not to rush!

That included stops mind you. Probably 9 hours actual riding time.

I actually find 12 hours of A roads, less tiring (and less painful) than 6 hours on a motorway.

Motorways are an endurance slog, sitting on my bike riding A roads is what I do for pleasure, and I can do it all day long.

Yeh, I have done A74/M6/M4/M5 from Gretna allllllll the way to Chippenham and then back....it's a slog and a half. GG had to lift my leg over the panniers on the bike because all my muscles had seized then I had fallen asleep within about ten minutes of sitting down!

Jeez, you people need to buy a Kawasaki Versys - 500 miles in a day, quick shower then walk into town to find a restaurant and bar, get food and a couple of local bevvies then walk back to hotel, sleep then do the same the next day and the next day. No numb bum, no tiredness.

Depends on the kind of roads for me. Had no problem doing 250-300, 3 or 4 days on the run (bevvies included), but 200 on m-way bored me and made me ache.

Totally agree with you I was motorway all the way back from Hovis's funeral. One stop for fuel then pee stop at Tebay. Its endurance all right

Just google map all the junctions you need to look for on a stretch, then for each instruction find something to tell you you've gone too far.

That's a good route too, could do that from Cannock by following my route until Hawes, then heading to Leyburn

I now live between Northampton and Kettering, so I'm far enough East to justify a more Eastern route, that route is probably what I'll do next time.

For this year though, I'll have the wife in tow, and you'd be lucky to get her on pillion for 150 miles, never mind 400, so this year I'll be driving up in the car and borrowing a bike once in Scotland.

Hongman,Myself and several other have just come back from Stirling to Chelmsford in less than 9 hours and part of that was with gales and torrential rain,4 or 5 stops for fuel and a break.Yes it is nice to go a scenic route when the weather is fine but remember it is also a lot more tiring especially if you don't know your route or the roads
I do this a couple of times a year by bike / car and use M11--A14--A1--A68--A720,extremely simple and easy to follow by the road numbers,on to Stirling 463miles

As I take it you have not done this before the A720 leads you on to and over the Forth Road Bridge, just follow the signs for the bridge and M90 Perth
The direct route from the A720 is A8--M9 Stirling to junction No10 and then A84--A85 Killin wich is 500miles approx but do able in a day by this route

Yes it is nice to go a scenic route when the weather is fine but remember it is also a lot more tiring especially if you don't know your route or the roads

Think that's down to the individual and the bike they are on. On both the SV and the Daytona, I find the scenic miles less tiring and less painful on the body. On the XT600 at 70mph I could sit on the motorway all day. Of course, 12 hours on the bike, I collapse and sleep like a baby afterwards, but whilst sitting on the bike I don't find it's the test of endurance that I find on the motorway. 6 hours on a motorway, I struggle to sleep afterwards because I can't find a body position to lie in that doesn't ache.

I rode your Sprint a few hours before facing a 3 hour motorway slog back from Blackpool on my SV, and remember wishing I could keep it for the journey home, so if I had that riding position and that screen for wind protection, I might not feel the same way, but for as long as I choose to buy sporty bikes, it'll be the scenic route for me unless timescales or weather dictate otherwise. I find the corners keep your body moving around and keep your muscles warm and supple, the variation in road conditions and the navigation (which I find easy) keep your brain alert, and less speed and wind resistance/noise helps prevent fatigue.

Rear looks a bit sqaurer than I anticipated. poop.

Yeah that p1ssed me off. Did 1000 miles of twisties and had the tyres nicely rounded, then did 200 miles on the M-way and squared them off again>! :(

Ok, I'm using Bibio's route from Scotch Corner to the campsite.

Anyone fancy having a go at making an interesting route from Harlow to Scotch Corner? The South/East part of the UK distinctly lacks as many twisty roads as up Norf!

I'm not being lazy btw - i can (and have) done this myself, but it looks crap and boring if I try to maintain a somewhat directish route. Plus I've probably chosen all the worst roads.

Simply head northish, via as many twisty bits as you can find. When you hit the edge of Edinburgh or Glasgow, have a glance at the map :-)

You going up on the Friday YC?

Yea

Don't fancy a group ride though TBH. Done one before the other year and spent more time *rsing with satnavs and slow people than riding.
