View Full Version : Leather Jacket reeks of fag smoke!?

I recently bought a vintage Furygan leather jacket, it's cooler then the Fonz but... the seller was obviously a smoker (I wasn't aware of this at the time) and it absolutely reeks of fag smoke.
Anyone got any tips for fumigating it?!
So far I've tried all of the following, with very little success:
Cleaning it with NikWax leather cleaner
Spraying/treating it with NikWax leather re-waterproofing stuff
Cleaning it with leather soap bar (the kind of stuff you get in Horse tack shops)
Cleaning it with a water / vinegar mixture
Spraying it with Fabreeze
Soaking it through with the hose
Leaving it out to dry / air for days on end on the washing line
Even after all this it's still got that 80 a day musty smell to it.
Any tips!?
Cheers
JM
is it the leather or the lining that smells?
the only thing I can think of after that lot is Febreeze or a peg on your nose while you wear it...

Both! More so the leather though, it seems.
I'll also add Fabreeze to the list, forgot about that!

I think once the smell gets into leather you're kind of stuck with it.
Try Febreeze and otherwise just wear it a lot, to lots of places and the smell should dissipate. Also hanging it out in the cold is meant to be better to get rid of smells.
(there are tales of vodka, baking soda and tumble dryers on google, but I'd avoid all of them if I were you!)

I'm prepared to let you off with this on account of your much-recognised blondeness...
I have a new(er) one! ( <-- look left slightly )
This one's an old-school vintage type one, 70's / 80's ish I'm guessing (it's bloody tricky finding info on these with them being French), so it's not as easy as replacing it...
I'd just like to be able to wear it without an onset of the dry boaks, that's all!

There's an art critic called Brian Sewill, a right eccentric upper class know it all, but he is also funny and interesting.
He has a sure fire tip for removing nicotine stains and smells from fingers.
If you google it you might be able to find out what it is, it might work for your jacket. If not sorry I've wasted your time. I couldn't repeat it on here because of the U rating.

So, any sensible suggestions (the Neutradol one aside)??
1 part vodka to 4 parts water in a sqooshy bottle, mix, spray on jacket, wait (about 4hours or so). Sniff.
You might smell like a pub floor but it'll be better than just fag reek, no?

Start smoking?
Heh, well that's one answer I suppose!
It's just had another good dousing with water & Fabreeze and is out on the washing line to dry/air for a few more hours...
Let's see if this helps.
Orrrrr, soak it in the bath with Johnsons baby shampoo then allow to dry

Dry cleaning?
+1,
Next time its raining really hard, take the bike out for a long ride then when you get home put the jacket in a plastic bag in the garage - forget about it for a few months. Then when you find said random bag in the garage you'll open it to be greated with a new horried smell - much worse than smokey. How you get that smell out is anyones guess.

Ah yes, that old favourite normally reserved for football boots being lobbed away in the garage at the end of the season, then redug out again a few months later.
A nice, pungeunt, earthy aroma.
 Speaking form experience huh Owen?
I will admit that i had a coat once that no matter what i did i couldnt get rid of the smokey smell. That coat had a sort of rubbery coating over it (Now it wasnt one of those kind of jackets)

Yup - not a leather jacket but one of my original textile jackets, found it in the shed amoungst all my winter gear and odd glove asortments. It made me weak at the knees when I went to try it on, swung it around my shoulders and got a strong waft of it. Straight into the bin it went.

resmoke it with hickory
put in smoke box, use hickory kindleing will smelll wuvally
My old leather stand of smoke for the exact same reason... stored hung up in the front room of some 100 a day smoker.
I sprayed them with freebreeze which did next to bugger all.
After wearing them for a few month stinking like a smoker they eventually started smelling like leather again.

See if your local ( and ever so friendly ) S & M Store has leather aroma & smother it in that?

One of the best ways of absorbing smells is "activated charcoal"
You can get this as a natural remedy in health food type stores.
What I would try is to get some of those tablets, split the jar into 4 or 5 batches.
Put each batch into a cloth bag (or an old sock). Wrap them up in the jacket, with one down each sleeve.
Then put the whole thing into a big cloth bag (or pillowcase) and shove it somewhere warm for a week.
Something similar worked for me with a pair of curtains from my mothers house.
Best of luck.

Do Dry cleaners do a leather washing/cleaning srrvice?
If not clean with leather cleaner on the outside and a mild baby shampoo sponge down on the inside, leave it to dry naturally outside?

I think you're screwed. Call it part of the jackets retro charm and ignore it.
