Your username.
Going through the GM and AR attenance lists made me think "I wonder how these people ever came up with their username?"
So, um, I'm asking.
A few made me giggle just now and in the past...
TamSV - Always assumed was a female, until I PM'ed him to have a laugh after he referred to himself as a he and I suddenly realised...!
-Ralph- -Assumed real name was Ralph, until I saw the GM Attendance thread!
Terah - Again assumed was female. No idea why. Username sounds feminine to me??
_Stretchie_ - Which bit?? :safe:
Now, I know that one should not assume anything about any internet personality that they have never met, but when I see a username, I unconciously build an image that said person in my mind...and I have been sooo wrong before it's amazing my brain still does it now. For instance, I picture Reeder like this in my minds eye:
http://www.freewebs.com/boilthechavs/chav1.jpg
Not a single person I have met from the Org has looked like what I "imagined" them to look like. ;)
But anyway. Interested to know the intricate background of your username's!

Yeah I was up all night thinking of mine. I've got an SV and my name's Tam (that's a manly man's name BTW - not short for Tammy or Tamara). :D
Wow, your name is actually Tam?
You really don't want to know.

At university, I jumped my mountain bike off of anything I could. Walls, sheds, cars and quarries. It was my friend Kate who gave me my the super hero name of Jayneflakes. My name is Jayne, I am a flake! :D
This was back in 1995, to think that sixteen years later, I am still using it is either very sad or proves it was quite funny. It is not just here I use it, you can also facebook me by looking for Jayneflakes. ;-)

One of my mates who introduced me to the interweb back in 99 (when it was all in black and white) called me Gajjii (he's from Slaggyford), so used it as first user name and ever since.
DJFridge
14-06-11, 04:17 PM
I picked up the nickname DJ at a company I worked for previously, because they discovered I had been a university radio DJ when I was a student. I sell fridges, so when I was looking for a username for some website or other (genuinely can't remember what) I thought DJFridge sounded ok and I've used it ever since.

Well mines pretty crap as well, when the wife first bought me a ps3 a few years ago, the first game I got was pro evolution soccer, Jose morinho was at Chelsea at the time and regarded as the special one at the time because of his success.
I thought it would be a good name for a football game but didn't realise you had that name for the whole ps network, so I've kept that name now on all forums I use.
Nothing exciting really, my surname is McKenzie so at school it was shortened to Kenzie.

It was the name of an alter ego created at uni to complain about stuff to companies in order to receive free things in return, it just kind of stuck as the internet and forums were taking off round about then.

School nickname, rhymes with the first 4 letters of my surname. Ralph was gone though, belongs to a guy in Pennine massive who doesn't post much, so I took -Ralph-. Think the other guy gets most of my PM's though. Didn't think about that issue at the time.

Mine was chosen by myself, it was given to myself.
Reason; Paddy's (yes you, you lightweight), Cumfy's and most people couldn't pronounce my old username 'saoralba' (tis gaelic) so my lovely friends of the org pronounced my username Sally become they are illiterate (or just lazy bar stewards).
Hi, I am Sally, the most womanly name for a guy on the org.

Like FGO I think its better if I dont go there. lol
Real name is Laurence, more commonly shortened to Laurie but only since my grandad (also called Laurie) died when I was 16. My little sister (now a copper) was a bit of a slow div-mong when she was little and took ages to learn to speak. The family always called me Laurence to distinguish between me and grandad but Jennie couldn't say my full name and stuck with calling me Lozzo. The mickey-take nickname stuck within the family for over 30 years and I hated it until the internet arrived and I needed a distinctive username, so I dragged it out into the public domain. I actually prefer it to Laurie now.

Mine's not very interesting either. Couldn't think of a username on the first forum I signed up for and didn't particularly want to use my real name ( Not sure why!?) but I'm a drummer and use pAiSTe cymbals so I thought that would do and has stuck.

Bibio
The Bibio was created in the late 1950's or 60's by Major Charles Roberts of the Burrisholle Fishery in Mayo and has received a great deal of attention and usage throughout the UK. It was originally tied to represent the heather beetle for sea-trout on loughs Furnace and Feeagh. The Bibio has now become one of the great Irish wet flies for brown trout, sea-trout & salmon. The Bibio is taken for a large range of dark insects from duckflies to beetles, Bibio is a group of true flies which include the Black Gnat and Hawthorn. Water conditions will determine the size of fly to be fished. The Bibio is a good taker of salmon and sea-trout when fished on the dropper on rippled pools in West Ireland rivers. This fly is best fished as a bob fly in the surface film.

BanannaMan
15-06-11, 01:40 AM
I was nicknamed BanannaMan by a bloke from the UK on another forum years ago because I had a yellow bike.
It stuck and I have been using on the net ever since.
Was in fact several years before I learned about the TV cartoon Bananaman. LOL
My username tops all for the least thought required, it's my name.
metalangel
15-06-11, 05:27 AM
I've always struggled coming up with internet nicknames, I was 'Charing Cross Branch' for a while back in 1998 but that got shortened to 'Branch-me-do' (and some old friends IRL will still address me as 'Branch') but one day on IRC we were all just picking random nicknames so metalangel was mine. I never came up with anything to replace it, by the time I did (for Xbox Live, as per below) it was too late and I'd registered as 'metalangel' for dozens of places. Bleh.

Strangest ps network name I've seen so far that's stuck in my head was 'bowel cancer' so when you got shot it came up on screen 'killed by bowel cancer'.
Weird I know.
Sir Trev
15-06-11, 07:04 AM
Back in 1989 you could only get very basic desk top publishing and word processing applications for the IBM XTs we had at university. I used one to write a piece for a Club magazine and it had these weird "stamps" you could add to the text. We now call such things clip art. One was a knight on horseback which I put next to my name and called myself Sir Trev as a joke. Has stuck ever since.
I honestly can't remember - THink it was something to do with having some kudos for actually going and doing it after my back injury and follow my dreams.
I wanted to spell it different so added the Que to it. Though it always gets shortened to Q which I quite like actually!!

From my boating days..............
I had a pair bright red of Tesco pants (from a £2 multipack - incredibly sexy) that I wore for boating all the time. One day I forgot them so paddled commando and one of my paddling buddies said 'Oh no we can't go boating without mike's lucky pants'. Sure enough we had a bit of a mare on the river that day and the name stuck..........
I paddled in those pants for 20 odd years until I took a big swim in Canada and was airlifted to the hossie where they cut all my kit off including the pants...... They were 'buried at sea' at Tamihi rapids on the Chilliwack with full kayak honours.
sorry to disappoint, nothing to do with the ladies.

Identical to above except my name is George. Everyone calls me 'G' and also Uncle G but as the above 'G' had already been taken (doh) then i fell back to 'geodude' as it was a pokemon i resembled and the fact i liked collecting rocks/crystals.

Was trying to sign up for a hotmail account 15+ years ago, every username i tried was taken, including my real name and, strangely (and geekily) the names of my favourite military aircraft (i was a big hit with the ladies). I looked around the room and I had a copy of EF2000 (flight sim) for the PC lying around and it was the 'TACTCOM' (tactical communications) edition. So i used that. I stuck the 7 on the end just in case, as I couldn't be bothered going through it all again....
