Speeding NIP

Just got a NIP through the post addressed to me for doing 57mph in a 50 for a vehicle registration number that I do not have any association with. I don't even live in the UK anymore or own any UK registered vehicles.

So either it's a admin cockup or possibly a case of stolen identity?

So my question ... do I even have to respond to the NIP? I'm slightly aggrieved that I have to spend the time and the money to respond by airmail.

But I would guess that if you failed to reply you would get a default judgement against you and 3 points on your licence and eventually debt collectors assigned. So if you do then return to the UK you start to get hassled, insurance up etc.

Far easier to reply saying you know nothing about any of this.


Friend had trouble with many speeding tickets, arrested for dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident etc. Despite showing them there was no damage to his car. He was dragged into the police station twice. Was waiting to go to court, no proof he hadn't done everything he was being charged with, when they came round to arrest him again. He having abandoned his car after yet another smash and plod now having it. No his car is in the garage. Finally they accept he had been cloned.

So get yourself clear as soon as. Otherwise it is likely other offences could get attributed to you.

57 in a 50. So much for ACPO guidelines. Bet it was a scamera somewhere. Money making Tossers, you are far better being away from the UK

Were you even there at the place and time where the speeding allegedly took place?

It's not a rented car, or a friends car that you happened to be driving on that day?

If the answer to all these questions is no, write back saying so. Not sure what boxes you need to tick on the NIP but there is a forum called Pepipoo that will help you with that.

But since I am not the registered owner of the vehicle surely I'm under no legal obligation to provide information ... the chances of this going to court is laughable

The speeding was on the A40 near monmouth. On that time and date I was in London on a business trip with no access to any UK registered vehicle. Since the AR2010 I've only been in the country and driven a vehicle once or twice so I can be very accurate in when and where I have been since september 2010.

I've put the reg on www.askmid.com (http://www.askmid.com) and it's a 2006 skoda octavia. I'm not sure if registered owner and nominated drivers get the same or different correspondance, My concern is that my identity has been stolen and or misused.

I'm just going to tick the disputebox on and create a cover letter. hopefully that will be enough to get rid of 'em.

I suspect the NIP has been sent to you as the registered keeper of the vehicle has given your details as the driver at the time of the allegation. If you dispute this then just write back saying so. If they do then try and proceed they will need to summons the registered keeper to give evidence as to why they have named you.... Doesn't happen very often.

Its a scam used to try and push the process beyond the six month period. Complete the relevant section of the NIP and add a covering letter.
