Title says it all really. I'm fairly new to these forum thingies so some of the phrases are a bit alien; I'm assuming that it's basically a thread that has been run before - my question is, why is it called a Hitler thread?

Because there was a youtube link posted loads of times. It was a scene out of a film involving Hitler going off on one about something and someone had subtitled it about his henchmen buying him a BMW and him going radge with them!

I did try a search before asking, unfortunately after the first couple of pages of results I gave up. Too many mentions of Hitler in other threads I suppose. It's amazing how often his name appears

It's where people jump on you for absolutely no good reason when you haven't seen something has been posted already. Tedious and unfunny, some run a sweepstake to see who can chime in first. Usually those who are last in the queue to use the search function themselves.

Untangle those knickers Ed!

It's not meant to be taken as people jumping on others, it's meant to be a giggle! Stop taking everything like that so seriously!

The trouble is if someone is new and doesn't know the 'joke' it can give the wrong impression.

10 points to the first person to post a link to the thread I'm talking about.

And that's the utility of the Hitler post. I've seen loads of funny shiz on reposts where I missed the originals.

It's usually easy to work out though, unlike the keithd option on polls. ;)

Was the thread this one? (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=140500) Where can I redeem my points? :D

Points are on there way to you on the back of a SAE, redeemable at your local branch of Woolworths.

LOL! I feel the example you have chosen is a rather....extreme one. That guy didn't take the pet because it was called a hitler thread...think that was the least of the reasons why!!!!:smt106

And why not choose the most extreme example? If there has been a repost then to raise that issue I think is fine, its just the way it is sometimes raised with relish that done not sit well with me. And if the person who posted the repost has no idea what the "Hitler" reference is, I can see why that may cause offence. But I imagine this discussion has already been had and this is in itself a repost…

As a side note I think we can exclude Godwin's Rule from this thread should the need arise.

Ahhh that old chestnut...

As the OP on that one never mentioned the "hitler" status one would assume that it wasn't actually an issue.

You mention Godwin's Law
Godwin's law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies)[1][2] is a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990[2] which has become an Internet adage. It states: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1 (100%)."[3][2] In other words, Godwin put forth the hyperbolic observation that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably criticizes some point made in the discussion by comparing it to beliefs held by Hitler and the Nazis.

This is both relevant and irrelevant to mention.

I don't think that anyone HAS invoked Godwin's Law in a long time, we usually avoid calling each other Nazis.

However as I have been aware of the Law for a long time, I find the fact that we use a term that has a defined meaning on the Internet, that in turn nullifies the comment, quite amusing.

well if someone want Godwin's Rule enforced on this thread say aye.

I'd have a thread a while back when I had a worked example of it being done in the EU parliment

The trouble is he's not around to ask. If it was or wasn't it comes down to interpretation and I'm guessing I'm not the only one who interpreted it that way. But as above that is the extreme example.

My objection to all this "Hitler post" calling is the relish with which it is done that can come across very negatively if the poster doesn't know what the joke is all about.

And surely that’s the point isn't it, its a 'joke' but if people don't get it and keep having to ask what its about doesn't that indicate that it's not funny anymore?

However as I have been aware of the Law for a long time, I find the fact that we use a term that has a defined meaning on the Internet, that in turn nullifies the comment, quite amusing.

I agree, which is why I referenced it here. Its good to see someone gets it.

Steve, that guy took the pet with SK cos SK went straight off in the deep end and told him it was spam and to delete it. At no point did he mention being annoyed with the Hitler thing!

Whilst I agree that people should be selective when they use the term, ie, not with newbies who don't get it, I disagree that your example is a good one for this discussion. So there. And I am ALWAYS right because I am a girl and that is the law. Comprehende? ;)

what do you mean like inventing a deasel blackbird, or ducati
its funny but some people dont get the referance :)

I interpreted it as being not just about the "Hitler" calling but also about other things. However that discussion was done at the time and maybe you're right and that is not the best example to use in this discussion but it was the one that first sprang to mind. I herby request the reference be stricken from the record.

I however standby my statement that the way in which some jump at the opportunity to shout "Hitler" at a repost is not always the best way to go about pointing something like that out. For if it was maybe we wouldn't have this thread to explain it?

Dave that is a fantastic example. There are something's that are universal and some that are not, and anyone new to a forum can take sometime to pick up on all the little in jokes but the understanding of them becomes easier in the correct context. If I were to post something up that had been posted before and someone shouted "Diesel Blackbird" at me I would think WTF, but if I posted that I put two stroke oil in a four stroke engine and someone replied "like a Diesel Blackbird" that might give me some clue as to what the joke is. To a new user apparently random posting of "Hitler" makes very little sense.

I also feel this is an ideal opportunity to remind people that Stretchie recently put Diesel in his Blackbird (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=167930).
