Hey all,

A bit of help if you don't mind. i am in the process of moving towards making (or at least trying) to make money from photography, however i am really struggling with coming up with a trading name. all the obvious ones have already been taken, wondering if anyone can come up with any ideas?

My details

Name: James Champion
Location: south coast (Bournemouth/new forest)

Not doing any particular photography, plan is to keep options open, sport, music, weddings, portraits etc.

Ideas so far,

Ones already taken

-James Champion Photography - (the obvious but already taken)
-JC photography / JCphoto - (again already taken)
-champion photography (taken and really dont like it any way)

Ones that i have thought of and are currently available.

-Photography by James (not sure if this is a bit cheesy)
-Studio Champion (again not sure if a bit cheesy)
-jchampion photo
-Studio JC
-james Champion (just the name on its own, no photo or photography

That is about all i have come up with, what do you all think? or if you have any other ideas that would be appreciated!

You need something to get you good exposure, but nothing too flash. Will your studio have curtains on the Windows or shutters.

You don't want anything to frame you in a negative light. Capturing the subject's imagination is the secret to a snapping up business.

using the JC thing is my biggest issue, i think that some people (i.e tigersaw) will think jesus! and that is obviously not what i am after. I am quite after just using my name, as not only is a name a good advert imo, but my name is quite unique (even though there is another james champion, who is a photographer!!!) and therefore is memorable point for clients. i am just so not sure, once i choose it i am kind of stuck!

I like memories made ,but I think its abit soppy, like just for weddings and that type of event. Couldn't see it working for sporting or corporate gigs etc

Jimmy2Feet
18-07-11, 09:03 PM
yeah i agree with you on that one.

It is a real shame that i cant have James champion photography. I would much rather have my name, as not only is it more personable, but also when advertising myself, i will also be advertising my business and visa versa!

Shame, you could have gone for Ed Shots ;)

I think including your name is a good idea as a 'catchy' name can sound a bit cheap. Depends what market you are going for though.

Just make sure you either market yourself completely different to the other one OR if you really like his stuff and want to catch a ride on his web traffic use similar tactic and tags ( stay away from copying main fonts though)

Jimmy2Feet

he only does fashon photography, and i dont think he is very good IMO.

I have gone for www.champion-photography.co.uk (http://www.champion-photography.co.uk) purchased the domain last night, The best of both worlds IMO, uses my name to make marketing easier, outlines right from the word go what i do, easy to remember, and most importantly does not limit me to a specific type of photography.

All i need now is to build my portfolio. so anyone in, or know of any bands that play at half decent (i.e. want and need lighting rigs) venues that want some pics taken (the shoot for free, and they can they look at and buy any images that they want) or any play any sports they want photographing (same as the music) let me know, i dont plan to be doing it for free for long!

Oh and ideally someone in the south of the UK, not york!

back in the 90's I helped with a pinball repair company called pinball express. The website was pinball-express.com but we got fed up having to say 'pinball express, thats pinball hyphon express' to people, so we changed it.

i do plan to also purchase www.championphotography.co.uk (http://www.championphotography.co.uk) incase some simple minded individual manages to miss out the - they will still be redirected to the correct site, i think however having the - in there makes the address more readable, therefore better for the advertising once again.

Well we had a web presence for 10 years, and our customers were not simple minded. That website got me an audience with the boss of Sega, several famous people and an appearance on breakfast TV. When your phone rings all day after some media exposure you'll be glad for taking out the hyphon. Good luck with the attitude.

Jimmy2Feet

please dont take that in the wong way tigersaw, i was not saying that your clients were simple minded! i was just stating that from experiance jo public are not the brightest people in teh world, in general terms!
