Does it matter - I seem to have one more bikes in my garage than everyone else on the challenge :p

So... we have power to all the lights and indicators, and we definitely have a working and smooth sounding engine (I've ran it myself now, rather than being told it works).

Scoot now in garage with SV. Had a little ride round the private industrial estate I picked it up from and all seems OK. Will try to get round to lubing cables and stuff as soon as the gixer's through its MOT.

Question:
If for example "someone" had managed to aquire a rolling chassis for £150 in need of an engine (plus tax and MOT £70).
But happened to already have a spare engine would they still have £80 in budget or would the cost of the engine have to come out of the £300 as well, if so he'd be £70 over spent

andrewsmith

I'm guessing DRZ400

I would say thats fair game actually, its a spare part thats in the garage

who's garage ? if I get bored I might build the AF1 I have in parts in the shed, I might need a gasket kit, but in theory then I should have about £250 to spend on bling .....;)

Cheers Mark.

I can see what you mean. I have a Honda VT500FT Ascot undergoing a restore at the minute and for in I have a spare engine + two donor bikes complete . But I resisted the urge to buy a shed VT500 ED and use the bits.
You could easily exceed the budget with only a few bits you may not have.

I think more to the point is for example a secondhand DRZ engine is between £500- £1250*, not really in the spirit of the thing is it :smt102

*Just done a quick ebay search

Cheers Mark.

Fair point Mark does defeat the object a bit.

But then I may have been barking up the wrong tree saying DRZ400. Matt, what the rolling chassis for?

I keep missing this thread... it doesnt seem to go bold when someone replies to it :(

Yeah Andrew its a drz, I bought an engine which had some rodgered valves a couple of months ago for £150. This has remained in the shed awaiting the valves for a few weeks now but the ball should shortly be rolling on getting it running again.

Although I had the motor the rolling chassis came up at £150 and I couldnt resist.
I asked that question above before I picked it up but it was totally hyperthetical, I asked it more for the benifit of others than I did for myself who may contemplate similar.

I cant attend P2P regardless but 3 reasons why this bike was never going to make it are:
A - The Chassis I picked up is off road only
B - I cant afford to run my bike let alone a second one
C - The chassis is for parting out, picked up for £150 but the wheels alone will fetch over double that.

The frame I've bought has been bought with the purpose of mounting the dud motor into it so that I can get it fired up (oil lives in the frame on these bikes) and running sweet before dropping it into my bike.

So, a bit of holiday time which needed spending means time in the garage to sort some things out. The first interesting discovery though, was the following:

http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab74/oprose/P2P%20Bike/DSCN0108.jpg

Any guesses?

Since the last update, I now have a rack at the back and working lights at the front.

I've also gone a bit Rolf Harris - can you guess what it is yet?

Papier mashe mudguard?

littleoldman2
22-11-11, 04:24 PM
Or a back mudguard. No idea on the mod in the first picture, unless it's some kind of luggage support. Coming on canny.

orose
22-11-11, 04:59 PM
Worryingly, Andy isn't far from the truth - it will be the mould for the actual mudguard, because the one that came with it was far too short.

The other picture is a handle for lifting the bike onto the centre stand, and as far as I can work out it is original...

It might be that I've been having a chat to someone who's planning a road trip next year or it might be that I've been offered a far too sensible a bike at a price that is difficult to refuse, but this trip is on my mind again.

Without reading some 300+ posts could I get a summary of the event please? Dates, rules, route (understandably approx), accommodation etc...

littleoldman2
19-12-11, 10:03 AM
OK, here it is. After having a few hours of chat with the Preston Dave, we have decided on rules, date and route.

1. £300 maximum purchase price. If you wish to buy new tyres fair enough, these are not in the budget cap. MOT price is in the cap as it is a requirement for a roadworthy bike but tax is not in the cap.

2. Minimum cc. 125, no maximum cc limit but keep in the spirit of the event, its not supposed to be a simple cruise to Spain, buy something fun!

3. Route. Motorway avoidance as much as possible, if its raining in the UK we will use them so we get to the ferry asap. Will show routes in another post.

Possibly going to take 4 days to travel there. People not wishing to ride their bikes back can sell/scrap them in Spain and fly back from Alicante but must make their own arrangements.

We are hoping for a man and a van to be with us for the trip, all offers accepted :)

Ferry prices and accommodation costs will be posted when we have a better idea of numbers as DP`s Spanish gaff may not be big enough for us so bigger place may be aquired.

ALL BIKES MUST BE LEGAL AND ROADWORTHY FOR THE BEGINNING OF APRIL. We would like to get all participants together for a photo shoot to try and drum up some support for charity.

Anyone wishing to come on their own proper bike are more than welcome.

Please use the original thread for chat, this thread is for info and attendance numbers. Here. http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=169764

Cheers Davepreston & Electro.

Nah the DT has gone over budget, £200 on an engine rebuild saw to that, I could argue that cranks, barrels and pistons are consumable on a 2 stroke but I won't be silly :-P

Using the scabside GSXR750.

But in that I need to register it etc. and find complete lights, possible new tail unit.

I present the mighty CB250 Racing Single.

http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad23/tomSV/CB250/90611db6.jpg

It already comes with the performance enhancing Rossi numbers.

http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad23/tomSV/CB250/269ca8d5.jpg

The engines miniscule oil capacity has been offset by storing some extra oil on the outside. :)

http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad23/tomSV/CB250/d0089a61.jpg

A big plus was that it comes with long MOT and Tax but I have to confess I blew the budget. The wee bike cost me £360 but, have no fear, I have a cunning plan to get through scrutineering.

The bike came with these spares - 2 wheels, a good tank, full set of lights and other bits and pieces.

http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad23/tomSV/CB250/30b9ccda.jpg

I'll fleabay that lot for easily more than £60 and probably have some change left over.

It looks like the lad that had it before had the parts in for a resto but never got round to it. There's a couple of packages from David Silver with some useful bits I'll be able to use, including the bulk of a full gasket kit.

Starts first kick and runs with no knocks or rattles. Tickover's a bit lumpy but it's been standing for a bit so I'll clean the carb and see how we go.

I'm going to take it for a run this afternoon. I'll be wearing my walking boots. :p

Good wee bike that.

I did a bit of work on it using mainly duct tape, a few helicoils, threebond sealant, a home made rotor puller, some mis-matched indicators and bits of wire. It only cost me a spark plug and some oil.

Some bits that are supposed to come off had to be drilled and hit with hammers. Some bits that are supposed to stay together came apart.

Sorted the oil leaks. It now has indicators (and a switch and idiot light) where previously there were none. It will now change between 1st and 2nd, which it didn't want to do before - just down to a displaced circlip.

After a full service, the only mishaps being a self-dismantling balancer shaft and one small fire, it was all ready to go. It was running great and, with a "Pirelli" on the front and a "Good Boy" on the rear, it was like a slow motion supermoto in the rain - great laugh.

However, I don't know if this trip is likely to go ahead, but I've realised April was really my window - there's no chance of me getting away for that amount of time for the rest of the year.

So I've sold it.

Nah, it was a great wee bike by the time I'd finished. After 32 years it's entitled to shear a few bolts. I honestly think it would have made the trip.

If I had more space I'd have kept it but I wasn't into it enough to put up with the lack of garage space.

One of the bikes had to go and the CB was the one I was least interested in.

Got £500 for it so I'm pretty happy.
