Can you only contact people if you have an account?
Just that I am researching an artist [deceased] and I noticed his great nephew has put up a comment about his work and I would like to speak to him about something.

Yes you need an account, we had some music at our wedding which we contacted the artist direct through Youtube but needed to sign up.

Takes 2 minutes to get an account and more importantly I recieve no spam from them (which is my main concern about putting my email address anywhere).
