View Full Version : 1st Service @ 7500
Had the bike a year now and fast approaching 7500 miles and 1st service is due. How much would I expect to pay? and is it worth it?
What do they actually do? other than change the oil & filter?
Do I need it done at a dealer to keep the warranty? or does an independant garage service count? (the local independant has a better rep' than the dealer!)

As long as they use genuine parts your local man should be fine.

I thought first service was at 500, second at about 3,000 OK a long time since I had an SV but I do my GSXR every 3,000 miles with an oil/filter change.
7,500 is definitely far too long for the first service

do it yourself. as long as you use OEM parts suzuki have to honer your warranty. i done my own services on my last bike and still got a warranty claim for a new cowl and lambda sensor. keep all receipts and a document of what you have done.
oil & filter change, check all fasteners and grease all pivot points with a splash of white spray grease. total cost about £35. dealer will charge you £160 min.
oil, use a good quality one. i use millers http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MILLERS-ZSS-10W40-SEMI-SYNTHETIC-MOTORBIKE-OIL-5LTR-/170616134482?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27b9839b52
oil filter, use an OEM one
sump plus crush washer, use an OEM one

+1 to the above points.
My 3000 mile/1 year one was £190 a month or two ago at Jim Allan's in Falkirk. I went the dealer route for (probably misguided) warranty purposes, and also cos it's the first time I've had a new(ish) bike, rather than my previous old workhorses, I thought I'd do it by the book even though it was all easy diy jobs. I don't think there is much else done for 7500 one so I'd expect the price to be much the same as labour is the main cost. Damned pricey for a glorified oil change!
Don't know why I thought it was 7500 - just checked and should have been done at 4000!
My previous expierence with warranties on vehicles are they arn't worth the paper they are written, and just a way of making you pay way over the odds for what amounts to an oil change and a quick look around. i do this myself every time I wash and clean the bike, oil chain etc.
Is there any biggie's where valves need checking etc?
I'll just be getting some oil, filter & plugs and servicing myself, then.
Do you need to & can you grease the swing arm pivots?

Valve clearance should be checked at 15,000 miles. It is a 20 minute job. And about 2 hours if you need to change the shims.
Suzuki do not appear to grease the swing arm. So always worthwhile pulling the pivot and packing some grease.
plugs will be good for about 12,000 so leave them in.
swingarm bearings are a right pain as you need the proper tools (which i have if you need them) so better leaving till winter to do them.

Not sure which indy place you're thinking about, but the one literally 10 mins down the road from me is very, very good. That said, I've never had any problems with ScotSpeed either in all fairness.

Hmmm, I thought for servicing and your warranty to be valid you had to have it done by a trained mechanic at least?

No Milky, it has to be done by a competent person. I am by profession a Mechanical Engineer. If you called me a mechanic, I would thump you. I do occasionally get my hands dirty, but by choice.
I have worked in the occasional workshop doing my mods that would invalidate the warranty if done by anybody but me. Such as drilling holes in blocks/heads to alter coolant flow. My design, my concession, my ass on the line.

Remind me not to call you a mechanic then ;)
In all seriousness, service rules for a warranty are such a grey area. How does someone prove they area competent person to the standards of the warranty provider in the event of a claim? Cos sure as a cat is a hairy beast, they will try and weasel out of the claim in whatever way they can!
i too am a BEng MMe (Hons) - (Engineer, Mechanical and Manufacturing Degree) and rebuilt/restored 2 classic cars (every nut and bolt) but you can bet I am not suitably qualified to work on my bike and change an oil filter!
That will probably be the opinion of every vehicle warranty department in the land! The will use every excuse under the sun, to weasel out of any wrranty claims.
I have already had dealings with them, regarding a horn which was not fastened properly at the factory and not picked up on the PDI, damaged the radiator. But because it was only cosmetic and did not stop the bike from working they were not bothered!
If you read into the 100,000 mile warranty now on offer, you will probably be very unlikely to successfully claim, and thats after spending 10 years paying for their dealers to service. just about anything that fails after the first couple of years will be down to wear - and therefore not covered by these wonderful warranties they offer:smt067
So, not that bothered about the warranty now, will just service my own bike and keep good records. Probably going to keep it for a good few years, so not a worry.:smt003
As for our local Suzuki dealer - tooooooooo many horror stories and personal dealings to allow them to touch my pride and joy

I am off to ayr to have the CBR serviced on Friday. I am not mechanically minded at all and want to keep the warranty.
Infairness, I've not been to the local dealer u are referring to for a while. Not since the last saga I had with them, but thigs may hve improved somewhat now they have the shop sorted again. I dunno.

As for topic on warranties for the warranty to be valid all servicing must be done by a VAT registered motorcycle / scooter facility

hhhmmm. so how come i got a warranty claim for mine even after changing the front end to a gsxr and the rear shock to a gsxr. i also fitted an exhaust and serviced the bike myself.
the claim was for a top faring where the paint had flaked off and a lambda sensor. suzuki never even asked about the servicing.
If there was a manufacturing defect (flaking paint) then the terms of the warranty make no difference. Your statutory rights trump the warranty in that case.
