View Full Version : Anyone own or collect vinyls?
I've always been interested in old records and the like, but never really understood what makes stuff worth hundreds and others worth just a couple of quid.
So what's in your collection? Anything very sort after or just your personal favourites?
I have a shade under 3000 12" singles and about 500 albums. Is there anything collectable? No idea.
Like all things, its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
I do have about 250 white labels, all mainly dance stuff though.

I've got a small collection of stuff I like nothing really valuable, and I picked up an old Linn turntable a hifi buff was selling for £100 (Basik). Sounds fantastic. It's nostalgia though, most of my stuff is on CD.

I recently sold all my old CD's as i've got everything in MP3 format now. The guy in this old school Hi-Fidelity style record shop offered me way more in store credit which got me thinking about vinyls...

Sold most of my vinyl to buy CD's when CD first appeared.
Wish I still had some of the albums, just for the art work or sleeve notes.
Still got some stuff in the loft
MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT A BACK UP OF YOUR MP3's. !!!!
Too many folk losing their collections when their PC goes tits up :bom:

I have a fair number of 50's & 60's 45's as well as 230 78's and a grand old 1962 radiogram to play them on, they include original pop stuff of the day like the beatles, animals, sam cooke that kind of thing, no idea what they are worth, but an afternoon spend spining the discs with all the old memories is priceless.
Cheers Mark.
got a fair few hundred albums but sadly my turntable (pink triangle) is burgerd. will be looking to get a beefed up SL1210 at some point.
No idea what white labels are?
Especially view are promo's that haven't been signed to a label. Usually single sided. Most of my stuff is played to death. Joys of being a dj for over 20 years. Would I sell it? Doubt it. It's not worth what I paid for it so no point. The funny thing is that I don't currently own a record deck lol

I have about 800 albums of the Jazz, Funk and Soul variety. Still play them now and then. I have a Rega Planar 2 (upgraded with new arm and motor) hooked up to Arcam AV amp via phono amp.

I have Abba's Arrival and Micheal Jackson's Bad on LP. I can explain neither of these possessions.
My parents however have some real classics. Beatles and Beach Boys spring to mind, all originals, all in the same condition they were when they left the shop. My Mum also has a fair few 45's, all classics she's picked up over the years.

Sold all my vinyls, both technics decks, mixers, and everything else for peanuts. If I still had it all now it would be worth a fortune both on terms of financial and emotional value.
I could cry at the white labels, picture discs and special editions I should've kept :(

From what i hear pretty much any desirable albums that are original are worth ****e loads. Depending if it's first pressing and what not they could be worth hundreds. :)

Thanks for making me feel old. My collection starts with the Beatles thro' to some mid 80's stuff. Lots of real music like Genesis, Pink Floyd and Bowie... none of that disco pop rubbish

Bri I thought you'd have stuff on wax drums ;)

The bottom ahs fallen out of the Technics market even though they dont make them any more. They used to float around the £500 a pair mark second hand, they now are stuggling to find £400 max. I used to have a pair of SL1200's, DJM500 mixer and a CDJ5000 cd deck. All went for under a grand. Never gonna flog the vinyl as per my previous statement

Mr LPH recently bought a decent turntable - which I call a record player just to annoy him - and he now buys quite a few of his new albums on vinyl like Them Crooked Vultures, Mark Lanagan, Beastie Boys.
He wasn't best pleased when I rootled around in the garage and dug out a load of my old stuff he thought I'd chucked away. Terence Trent D'Arby and INXS picture discs, gatefolds of Wham, and a huge collection of Wonderstuff and Mission remixes plus some classic Cult.

I'll have to find out where/when there are record fairs on round here, any links for good sites that list them?

Of COURSE it's a record player, I'm sure only DJs use turntables (ah, the platters that matter, the wheels of steel, the final vinyl etc etc)
Back to the question, I've got a couple of hundred albums in my loft. Most of it is stuff I've never replaced on CD and I never get a chance to listen to on the old hifi - Genesis, Rush, Heart, Magnum, actually most of it is 70s and 80s rock. Somewhere in one of the boxes is an original 12" Guns 'n Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" which was apparently worth £25 once. Not sure who to though!

I think Ive still got some Taiwanese bootleg Bad Company albums. They might be worth something for rarity.
And even an original Sgt Pepper, the mono version.
Scurries off to empty an old cupboard and annoy the missus.
