View Full Version : Org Mountain Bike Weekend - Oct 22nd/23rd? - ALL Welcome

Howdy All MTB'ers (Plus anyone else who fancies a go),

As my good lady wife is away in Londinium in October, I was thinking forward planning and arranging a MTB weekend on the 22nd / 23rd of October.

Current thinking was for Cannock Chase as it is local to Brum and quite central for a number of people. However could do Penmachlo again / Llandegla if people fancied.

Happy for anyone to stay at mine and make a weekend of it, I have space for 3 peeps on beds / sofa and room for another 3-4 on blow up beds on floor. I live in Bromsgrove area so only 35 minutes away from Cannock Chase. (Also happy to fetch people from either Brum or Bromsgrove train stations if people don't want to drive.)

In case anyone who isn't fit, new to mountain biking etc, the idea is to simply have a laugh and take our time.......no man (or woman) will be left behind. If we do go to Cannock Chase then they have mountain bikes for hire if peeps want.

So...........if you fancy some beers, good company, frollicking in mud and some good fresh air then you are more than welcome.

Cheers

Or both? :-)

Both then you can decide on the day...... was thinking maybe Saturday head into Wales, then do Cannock chase on the Sunday as local, so people can then head off earlier to get home.....depends what people fancy I guess.

I'd definatley be up for this, Cannock chase is only about 45mins from me. If your thinking of heading to Wales I've heard good things about Afan.

Drew Carey

Hi Christian, more the merrier........

Have heard good things about Afan also.......nearer the time we will decide what people fancy.

Just wanting to get a date in peeps diaries first.

Drew Carey
06-09-11, 09:56 PM
Just thought of another option if anyone fancies......The Wyre forest. Very little is known as a lot of the trails are unofficial.....but some brill single track. I could ask one of the Wyre regulars to take us round.

I will try my best to make this if it's in Cannock Chase. I supposed to be going to Supersonic Festival in Digbeth that weekend though so need to sort out which dates i am likely to be free first, if at all.

Coolio......

My house is open to anyone who fancies so you are more than welcome.

Current thinking is going to be Saturday do Cannock Chase, about 35 mins from mine. Then Sunday, a trip to Wyre Forest for some really good technical and muddy Singletrack.

I'd love to but I can't afford the travel or the time at the minute. If you lot fancy cummin down south sometime we could ride Swinley Forest. I could afford that journey, 10 minute pedal!
Have fun!

Hope you get it sorted.

As for Swinley - yup, most deffo somewhere I want to get down to sometime.

I don't come on here much anymore but would 100% be interested in coming a long no matter where it is. I'm not the fittest in the world but I'm getting there, still pretty slow at climbs though.

Cannock chase supposed to be very good but alledgedly quite difficult and technical in parts... all reds and blacks so would need a reasonably decent bike.

Llandelga is pretty awesome, the initial climb is horrible but then it gets good. We did the red route a couple of weeks ago and my GF came off twice pretty bad.

She came straight down the hill in the background at speed and went straight off the bridge... it was hilarious, after I realised she was ok of course.

Hi G,

You are more than welcome to come along.......if your bike was able to do Llandegla red's then Cannock won't be an issue. I've done Llandegla blacks on my Hardtail before, so trust me, won't be an issue.

The thing with any of these trail centres is taking your time, you could do them on a rubbish apollo bike if you fancied.......providing you take time.....so your Cube should have no issues at all.

I've only got a crappy little Dawes hybrid with some mild knoblies fitted. It copes with some severe bashing in Sutton park when i take it out.

Hello, I am a newbie but I'm up for this (as long as it's not raining 'cos I'm a girl like that).

What time do you guys normally meet as I will be at least an hour from Llandegla or Cannock?

Howdy and welcome......knowing how long it takes some people (including me) to get up and fed etc, I guess we would look to be pitching up for about 10:00ish, with a plan to be setting off at about 10:30ish.

Once we get to a couple of weeks before, will let everyone know the full plan.

However, if anyone has any additional ideas etc please pop them down! :-D

Currently known to be staying,

MattSV
DMC

G - let me know if you also want to pal.

The plan so everyone knows,

Pitch up at Cannock for 10:30 too start at 11. will do the full 15 mile loop, it wont be a race and we will keep together and take our time. If anyone does want to do the smaller loop they are more than welcome.....we will stop at the decision point which is about 3 miles in.

Cheers all

Drew.

I may not be able to make it :(

While cleaning my bike after Dalby I noticed the rear wheel has been significantly rubbing the frame/ swingarm. Took to pines cycles and they have checked the dish of the wheel and can't fix it so think the frame may be bent or faulty.

So just dropped it off at the shop I bought it from, not sure if I will have it back by the weekend :(

G - just had another thought...

I have a 1998 Scott Comp Racing:-

http://www.veloplus.ch/images/veloclick/Scott_CompRacing2008112084234.jpg

Medium Frame, I am 5'9" and fits me fine.

XT mech, long travel rockshock judy's, V brakes!!!

Let me know if you want me to chuck it on the rack with mine, just let me know by Thursday evening as I will need to swap the stem and saddle back over (currrently got a wide gel saddle and short stubby stem on it for the Mrs)

I can sort a spare pare of SPDs if you need them, might need to change the tyres though (currently got Tioga XC slicks on there) - I have probably got a spare pair of wild grippers I can chuck on, unless you want to bring your own.

Would hate to see you miss out on what will be a great weekend...

Just to add some more food for thougt G.

I have my hardtail also, with rock shok toras....but......it is a single speed!! Lol

If you do borrow Matts, i have size 9.5 spd shoes also.

So loads of options. Or like Matt says, you could hire one for the day and get a taste of a full sus before your Orange arrives.

Binky.....got your Pm, no worries. Have decided that rather than Lily cooking, whoever does pitch up, we can just get some grub from tescos or takeaway.

Also - Matt or anyone else, you guys ok with setting up gears? At Dalby last week, the gears were not moving and getting stuck in places......having prepped the bike just now, I think it is that the rear mech cable has stretched and is too loose, so its not pulling the derailleur properly......is this something that will be easy enough to sort tommorow???

http://www.coedllandegla.com/

Aiming to be there as 09:00 when the gates open, potentially aiming to get around the red with black additions twice, but may end up doing the full loop once with a bit of practice time on the skills area afterwards. We'll play it by ear.

Any takers? Everybody is more than welcome, it's not particularly difficult just fast and flowing and no one will be left behind.

How old are the cables? They are sill cheap, I'd just get another one incase its stretched.

Its £6 to get pines or a local bike shop to fit a cable and tune the gears. At least then you know its perfect.

Its not the cables......the pivot on the actual rear mech is not moving freely and is sticking. Si therefore going to take rear mech off, clean properly and hopefully get it moving freely again. If not - new mech time.

28-10-11, 01:25 PM
You won`t need a new rear mech Drew , I`ve had the same XT Rear Mech for eons , the pivot may have an O ring in it , that will be caked in silt and all sorts of clabber , de-grease and clean , thin veneer of grease , back on the bike , throw a new cable on whilst yer at it , I replace mine annually .

All I have ever replaced on my Mech is the Jockey wheels as the original ones looked like 50p pieces . I didn`t buy the super duper ceramic bearing ones that were in there and slung some LX ones in , do the same job afterall
