Looks like crab apples to me. Much to sour to eat, but I made some really nice wine from them years ago. Chop 'em, crush the bits, add sugar , water, and yeast, ferment, bottle. Won't keep too long, so drink and enjoy in January when everyone's skint. ;)

Cheers Keith any chance of a PM or post with some slightly more detailed quantities :)

I managed to brew a non-alcoholic bitter a few years back (not on purpose i might add) so it's all a bit of a mystery to me, cheers!

You could try biting into one just see if they're ok. If you fall asleep for a 100 years you never know, a handsome Prince may kiss you...

They're definately crab apples. There's not enough juice in them for cider - sorry.
Crab apple jelly is lovely but it takes some experience to make a good one.
Crab apple wine sounds good; I've not tried that one, but you need a fair bit of equipment for home wine making.
I'd go for chutney. This recipe is one of the best. It works well with left over, unripened tomotoes as well

Smash them out of your garden with a badminton racquet and see how many greenhouse windows you hear smashing in the distance ;)

Si

I don't have the book the recipe came from, so this is all from memory.

~5lb of crabapples
1 bag of sugar
1 gallon of water
Half a campden tablet
Some yeast nutrient (see manufacturers recommendations)
Yeast

Chop the crab applies into small dice.
Dissolve sugar in water, add to apples
Crush campden tablet and add
Leave overnight (kills mould, bacteria etc)
Add yeast and nutrient
Leave to ferment in a large bucket until fermentation slows
Strain off crab apples and leave to ferment for another day or two
Transfer to a demi-john and leave until fermentation finishes
Bottle
Leave for a few months
Enjoy

If you crush the crab apples you'll get a stronger flavour but it will be difficult to get clear because of the pectin content. In that case you'll need to add an enzyme to remove the pectin.

Hope that helps,

Keith.

Thanks for the suggestions, I shall keep you posted on the wine/jam/handsome prince theory/chutney/hand grenade/greenhouse smashing shenanigans

After this mornings thread, it's a pretty good guess that he'd know what to do with all the women.

Had to stop myself bursting into laughter at work. Very entertaining.

Was going to suggest use them as ammo to fend off all the other ex's that may come out of the woodwork :p

Just ask the Ex's Si, Im sure they've got a few suggestions for where they can be stored if nothing else.

I will forever see this image when tactcom7 is mentioned.

Ok so progress so far.....

Tuesday had a few hours free so i did this.

From this..

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd319/tactcom7/2011-11-21115130.jpg

To this..

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd319/tactcom7/2011-11-2113-14849.jpg?t=1322392897

Which gave me this..

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd319/tactcom7/2011-11-21140321.jpg?t=1322392949

Which weighed this..(in Kg)

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd319/tactcom7/2011-11-21140331.jpg?t=1322392991

Then using my trusty juicer I turned all that in to this..

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd319/tactcom7/2011-11-22202902.jpg?t=1322393008

It's fermenting away in the kitchen, still has a reading of 60 (or is it 1060) on the hydro thingy which worries me a little, should it Keith? I don't know.
Oh well, looks pretty vile but only time will tell.
