Mr Speirs, I'm going to take anything you say about cars with a pinch of salt... you bought an Alfa!
just remember it has indicators, they aren't painted on...

What a silly thing to say Jen... Its a BMW, of course it doesn't have indicators.
You're well on your way to being a prize **** in/on all your vehicles then? A gixxer and a BMW?!

What else do you use when parked in the disabled/ambulance only/fire exit when you'll just "be a minute"?

Surely they are the "hazard" lights... not the same as indicators. [-X
Its a 57 plate BMW 118d. Its quick enough, its comfortable, reliable and surprisingly efficient.
Nice choice but I think you have missed your own point...!
while a bike is fine in the summer it just isn't going to cut it for the winter.
Neither is a RWD BMW when its really snowy - they are a total nightmare!
But for the amount of snow we get in the UK - just get your car-share partners to drive on the snowy days :)

Ha, its true it might be rwd but at least it wont fall on its side when it does get slippy. Not to mention the fact that it has got a roof too :)
It wont be falling on its side because it'll be rendered immobile at the merest hint of ice...

Its got traction control and I'll get a set of winter tyres. It'll be fine.

Go to 5:30 and it shows what traction control can do on Ice.
I've lived in Germany and seen Germans driving around in their BMWs in snow far far worse than we get over here without too many issues.

Thats because they are used to driving in snow or have been taught the proper technique. Whereas in this country the first sprinkling of white stuff people panic and bury the throttle.
Remind me I must get some snow sox for our Audi, now theres a car that really is fricken useless in the snow.
Enjoy your new car, judging by the number of happy 1 series drivers there are at our workplace I would think you've made a good choice, much better than a Prius IMHO.

In my experience any modernish small capacity petrol engine can be economical enough for that commute if you drive it right. I've got a 1.2 litre 56 plate Clio and commute is 26 miles per day and not a motorway or dual carriageway in sight and over the 4 months I've been commuting not had less than 47mpg over a week. Highest was 50.8 one week during the school holidays. Cheap to insure and when bought it 2 years ago was under £5k with only 19,000 miles on clock. Would take a few years to get the difference back on a £9k Prius with those figures, if you ever did.

You can buy a Citroen C1 for £6k brand new and those things in the snow are brilliant. 60mpg+, £30 tax and £6k brand new you just can't complain.

Well done - you loved my beemer so much you went out and bought the mini-me version. But at least now when I get a lift with you I might be able to wear a nice frock.
But why do you need parking sensors on a 1 series? I have got them on the 7 but don't really need them, as I have eyes for that.
As for driving in snow - ha ha ha. Forget it. Go to 1min 30sec onwards to see where BMW designers got their ideas for winter traction control.

Wow...lots of good advice in this thread and lots to think about.
Whilst your mulling over the choices, why not spend a little bit of time and a little money, by sponsoring me or buying a raffle ticket or 10?
