surrey university

their security is useless.

i dropped on floor and broke clutch leveller. (typical thing to happen to me).

so left bike there for a day or two. go there this evening on dads scooter to put some chains on it.

security comes along and asks what i am doing, and i explain, broke bike and now putting lock on it.

they ask me a few stupid questions:

-are you a student
- do you work here
- is this your bike
-let me see your campus card
etc etc.....

so they finish there little investigation with a results along the lines of "lets just log this and waste your time"

prior to this event a friend of mine had his R6 2010 model stolen on campus which had a lock and alarm fitted. a van came along, in the bike went into it. value of the bike around 5-6k?? this happened in broad day light

security did nothing. on video and everything. and the place the bike was parked was in the middle of campus where there are gates either side of this particular part of road. so why secruity allowed this vechile through god knows.

so i finally lost my temper turned around and said to the security people "why are you wasting my time, when i know you will do F*** all about my bike being stolen especially since my friend had his R6 stolen in june this year." they were more concerned about where i parked my bike (to my opinion on the other side of a set of bollards is the best place as van cannot get close enough to the bike for it to be easily lifted into the vehicle)

rant over. maybe its time to grow up, sell both bikes and get a nice car and add another car to rush hour traffic?????

So you are annoyed they came to see who was paying attention to the abandoned bike?
I'm confused here.

+1 - maybe your mates R6 being nicked caused a change in Security Policy - and maybe now the Security Guard is thinking "Why Bother, they are all snotty scrotes those bikers".

When I was moving my off-the-road-cos-its-a-pile-of-poo CG125 to my new house in the back of a mates van, it was spotted by undercover cops in the back when he stopped to drop something off. They waited round the corner and then pulled us over to have a chat.

Was I annoyed that the cops pulled us to check out a bike in the back of a van, nope, just means that they are keeping an eye out and doing their job BEYOND just reacting to calls for help.

+1 I completely fail to see why you are having a go.

As an ex-Surrey student, I would just add the following:

About half the security staff give a vague t0ss about their jobs. These will be the ones who came to check what you were doing. And, by the way, imagine trying to prove who you were without a driving licence and no photo ID as I had to occasionally (it was over 20 years ago and the only reason to carry ID was if you looked too young to get in the pubs).
About half the security staff are ****. About half the security staff have always been ****. They'll be the ones who did nowt to stop your mate's R6 disappearing. Or the expensive sleeping bag I left in my accidentally unlocked car (final year - I had a licence by then!).

What you'll never know is if, the day before you got there to lock it up, active security guards stopped someone else from nicking it.

Anyway, what are you studying at my old Uni then!!?

to mirror what the others have said, i would be happy they have at least taken an interest and come over to see whats going on. Who knows, you could have had a word with the security guys and asked them to be extra vigilant in keeping an eye on your wheels in the future

Bike or car, it doesn't matter they can both be stolen.
Make it harder for your bike to be stolen;
-lock it to something sturdy and through your chassis
-have an alarm fitted or get an alarmed disc lock
-get a tracker fitted

There is only so much you can do, if someone really wants it then they are going to get it

Yea, little confused about the OP's post. I'd be more than happy that they were/had taken an interest in what was going on.

Your immature reaction to him taking an interest and doing his job is only going to make him take less of an interest next time.

I do a lot of work for Virgin Media, 80% of their sites are manned by G4S. 80% of the guards employed are total jobs worths and a total pain in the ass. Talk to them nicely, treat them with respect (even though they will still give you ****) they finally come round and are actually nice guys and when you need something, they are more than happy to help. Talk to them like sh*t as if they are stupid (like you did) then:

1. It will ruin your day
2. It will ruin their day
And
3. If he see's someone tampering with your bike next time, he will probably turn a blind eye. 'oh well'

I'd apologise if I were you.
