View Full Version : Noisy server
Can anyone recommend a soundproof box I can put my noisy server in. When it was last used on a daily basis it was in a tall cupboard thing in my former office. After a year of grief I have at last managed to recover it, it's a l-o-n-g story, only to find that in a home environment the noise from the fan is driving me nuts. It's a IBM System x3400.
It's got loads of bells and whistles and it was hideously expensive so I don't want to have to bin it but even deaf old me, I can't work with the din:mad:

The problem with a box is heat dissapation...you enclose that server without some kind of external cooling (ie air con) and it's going to go pop regardless.

Sell it minus the HDDs on ebay and buy something smaller and more powerful with the money.
Seriously.
Oh Hong - I finally got to those servers I was talking to you about at the AR - you still interested?

Can't you stick it in the garage or something? I've got a network harddrive that was annoying me so I stuck it in the attic and dropped a network cable down inside the wall and out a blank socket
Yes that's a thought... would be a bit of a long cable run but I spose I could work round it:scratch::scratch:

Change the fans, thats what i did.

IBM server, unlikley you can change them as they tend to have custom fittings and pinouts for hotswap capability.

Not so true, there are cases that are used to deaden the sound down though baffling but still provide airflow for a few servers.
These are ubber expensive imo though.

clean it.. with compressed air,
You could buy a soundproof se (http://www.comms-express.com/categories/office-styled-sound-proof-server-cabinets/)rver cabinet (http://www.comms-express.com/categories/office-styled-sound-proof-server-cabinets/)for it...might cost more than a new machine though!

Will back that up as a tenant in the building I'm managing has got some sound proofing in the cases, and it aint cheap along with most the stuff going into the building

BH!!! Think I'll give that a miss!!!
I installed one of the kell systems 38u cabinets in the office and its fantastic. Aesthetically it fits in really well. Have a look at http://www.acoustiproducts.com/en/index.asp for other types.
The after care for the kell cabinet has been fantstatic. Replaced psu and complete set of fans without question.
The designs vary and most are passive cooling to few degrees higher than ambient temperature.

Ed, have a look these
http://www.kellsystems.co.uk/
We put the kit that we use to run the stores into these. Seems to work OK, cooling can be problematical though...
Edit - Beaten to it by Pookie... same thing though...
A more serious suggestion (as someone else already suggested).
Take the disks out, sell the IBM on ebay, buy a HP Microserver with £100 cash back (http://www.ebuyer.com/253305-hp-proliant-athlon-ii-neo-n36l-microserver-100-cashback-633724-421) and enjoy a couple of bottles of whisky with the left over cash.

Ed, correct me if I am wrong.
You have this computer that you want to use.
You don't need it to be Xeon-class Server hardware, you just want a PC at home for the business.
You are reluctant to dump it as you paid quite a chunk of cash for it.
You do not plan on getting 32U's worth of other servers.
A nice, quiet mid-spec PC would do you just as well.
If so, I stand by my first post.

what about sticking it in the garage / loft and using powerlines / wifi to connect to it
Or in a cupboard with holes and fans

Sell it, get a PC, make a profit, buy petrol, ride.
You know how much eleccy that server is pulling compared to a PC? It'll cost you in the long runt o keep it.
