Well, as far as Madlanders rideouts go that riding season was rubbish! We've had a couple of sucessful 'anyone going out on Saturday' runs and Phil arranged a camping weekend. That was it wasn't it?

I even resorted to riding into EAR territory to attend a rideout ;-)

Do we need to arrange them further in advance? Or get some traditions established? Other sections are organising their end of season rideouts that they do year after year.

Wasn't much better in the EAR either, crap weather didn't help much either

I agree Col, I always try and arrange stuff but nobody can be bothered, I try to make any madlanders rides that happen.

Half of them have turned gay and sold their bikes.

Btw, We need to get back into our laning as well.

Must admit I've been busy this summer, when the weather has been good I've been away.

I'm still planning on the Normandy long weekend April time.

I resent that. I went to most of your saturday rides.
But to be fair. More happens in this section that it does in SWS!

It has been a bit crap yeah. My excuse was my final year of uni (pretty important btw, for those of you who don't know what higher education is ;) ) and now a vast lack of funds. Trying to earn what little money i have resorted to me missing most of the Saturday/Sunday rides too.

Far in advance stuff is a good shout. :)

Being one of the above......I sold up as sorry to say but Motorcycling is far to expensive to have as a hobby.....unless you have lots of expendable cash - which we don't.

As for rideouts, the Madlanders to be fair has always been quiet....I have only been on one that I can remember which is the one Col did. There just simply aren't enough active numbers in the area - hence why we used to go on those in Wales etc more often.

I think a lot of people are in the same boat - when times are hard, what is the point in burning more cash in fuel - when you can sell an asset to make things easier?!?!

We will be returning to bikes, when we are in a position to afford to cover fuel, insurance, tax, servicing etc etc without making things finances hard to live by.

Anyways, what with Xmas on its way, will be good to see everyone again at the Xmas market is all are up for it.

Well im sure theres always someone who can help you with the servicing and bits if help is needed, i think i might have to pop up the xmas market an see some people :smt045

Drew Carey
05-10-11, 04:30 PM
Not really the servicing side of things that bothered me, was more that going on a rideout would cost 40+ quids in fuel, added to that monthly insurance, plus paying monthly for the bike etc......soon turns into a £200-£300 per month hobby.

So Lily and I said we would not get bikes until we could afford to pay outright for the bike and insurance etc.

07-10-11, 05:57 PM
I sold my bike because going out on my own was boring and no one ever wanted to :D

My lust for riding died went peteandlissa quit, they knew all the good routes, all the good places to stop and did it at a good pace.

Then there's all the other reasons like people seriously injuring themselves, or worse :(... And the need for my licence.

Mr Speirs
07-10-11, 06:32 PM
My lust for riding died went peteandlissa quit.

I'll admit that too.

Pete n Lissa's passion for riding was infectious. First year riding I did over 8k miles. Did 7.5k in my second year and my third year after illness forced Pete to stop riding I have done a grand total of 2.5k. You could always rely on them to be doing something interesting and whilst 13 hour days didn't suit everyone it was fine for me and we had some good times.

Recently: There have been days where the weather was beautiful and there was no excuse not to but couldn't find the enthusiasm to get out on my own.

Bike riding has always been purely pleasure for me and so going out with others is the only way I get pleasure out of it.

I will however carry on riding on trackdays but for now I won't be riding on the roads. Ill see how I feel next summer so might be out then however my 2012 is now looking a bit full on with solid work commitments until mid July next year. So not looking good for any type of riding.

orose
07-10-11, 06:56 PM
Interesting last couple of posts, I'd say - I ride a lot, but there are times when it's a bit of a chore.

Maybe the thing to do is to find a bike club in your local area - I used to enjoy the social rides with my IAM group, but that obviously isn't for everyone, and there are always the TRF groups for the mucky pups amongst us.

Specialone
07-10-11, 07:35 PM
I'll be honest, I haven't been riding as long as some in our group but I agree about the riding alone, when I do go for a ride on my own it's never as far or as long, I much prefer going out with others, it's more enjoyable.

As G said about the people crashing, that's never gonna leave us or the worry of losing our licenses, I limit my speed on the road mostly for this very reason, unlike most I don't need to be going flat out to enjoy riding.

We each get different things from riding I guess but it is what you make it.

After France this year I want to do more travelling as well so I won't be giving up anytime soon.

Lol. For me I've never lost the interest. Just my head started to rule my heart. The minute we can afford them, both me and Lily will be on 2 wheels.

As for Pete n Lissa. Must admit I had a similar feeling once Hovis passed, I just couldn't be bothered anymore. When there wasn't a ride out, he would come over and we would just on our bikes somewhere. So know how you guys feel, when you lose people from being on the org (for whatever reason) there are less keen people around - so you ride solo more often.

I can't manage more than a week or two without riding the bike, riding the bike relaxes both muscles and brain for me and there's something psychological about it that puts my perspective right on things and puts all my ducks back in a straight line. Concentrating on riding the bike for a couple of hours, seems to allow me to think clearer the next day. I'm going to SORN the Daytona for the winter, but I couldn't manage without the XT as a winter hack. I go out on my own quite regularly.

Interesting points of view here regarding the expense and possibly that people have to work to sustain their income during the economic climate.
I was going to give up/buy a smaller bike or change my current bike that I have had for seven years and for the want of better words"Bored" with it.
This is where I revert back to the expense, very little to insure £160,Tax £75, complete large service plus extras £350 still got good tyres on it so for what I got offered either as a sale or p/x it looks like I will be still plodding about on the old girl next year.
It is nice to unwind by going out for a nice ride on your own at your own pace and blow the cobwebs off as it is also nice to ride in company but I am not a fan of large groups,i.e. more that 5-6,as it always seems to incur some sort of "Incident"

Me its my only transport.

But i ride very slow 99% of the time. So im not interested in meeting people for rides as there idea of a ride is completely different to mine.

Im also more spontaenous, planning doesnt work for me (Not getting into why). I'd happily go out for a ride now at 11pm, but everyone else has resposibilities unlike me.

One of my friends used to be the same. Just randomly text me and off we went. Good times.

Got to admit; I’m probably also gonna be joining the ghey chain with my madlander bum chummies

And for all the afore-mentioned issues: not enough time, too expensive , don’t get the same amount of pleasure from it, too risky for the licence, etc etc

TBH I rode far more on the track last year. Six trackdays, more than double my number of rideouts. I love the laugh & banter on rideouts but for riding pleasure trackdays win hands down

Might try a bit of green laning but I reckon I’ll knock it on the head for riding big bikes on the road

Oh, and here’s a pic from Snett. Not bad for saying I slept in a garage the night before…

It's weird when you get a track bike aint it? You just seem to less fun on the road. Theres nothing like getting to a track the night before. Having a few drinkys with mates, then getting up the next day and spending the entire day riding and chatting about bikes.

I guess it's the same type of pleasure as going for an NW or a peaks weekend but cheaper and more frequent.

The absence of looking out for tractors, wNkers, cops, speed cameras etc and concentrating only my own enjoyment (and that ain't necessarily being fast cos I'm not) has lead to me resorting to the track and abandoning the road. It's not the cold that we worry about, it's the greasy conditions, mud and salt that we don't like.

I ride my DRZ more in the winter, I don't want my sprint getting tarnished by tons of road salt thanks.

A few of us a couple of xmas's ago went out for a ride when it had snowed and settled on the morning, so we don't need to man up.
I'm also self employed so taking unnecessary risks on dodgy roads in the winter isn't a good idea, I get injured, I don't get paid.

-Ralph-
14-10-11, 07:48 AM
There's no such thing as inappropriate weather conditions, only inappropriate clothing. Riding for me is a hobby though, so why should I do it when it's not pleasurable? That means rain. If it's dry, not bothered about the cold, been out round the Scottish highlands in sub zero temperatures many times.

And yeah, like Phil I don't like my bike getting into this state

Right, think i'm going to head out tomorrow if anyone fancies coming along? Not entirely sure where yet, but open to suggestions. Maybe towards Wales and Kidderminster way...

I would love to attend a madlanders Saturday ride out , however work most Saturdays ... including today so will miss the Wales game :(

TBH with the price of petrol , don't often get out on the weekend , use bike every day for work which is plenty of miles a week

There is no way I could afford to keep the bike just for fun

Cheers Steveg

Well I was heading out today with metalhead, but I've woke up this morning with my back still painful after hurting it yesterday, I'm gutted, weather looks perfect :(
