View Full Version : So what is it about Audi's

Rather than pollute the other "what car" thread, thought I'd start a new one.

Now I shall put my cards on the table, we're an Audi owning househould. Its big, its comfy, it eats miles effortless, its good to drive, reasonable to insure and TBH the servicing isnt to bad either. Although the 19" tyres probably arent the best in terms of longevity or giving grip in the snow.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e344/fizzwheel/DSC_0755-Copy.jpg

I would prefer a manual gearbox, but I'm being picky the Multi tronic in it is one of if not the best auto boxes I've used. I drove 500 odd miles in it in one day and felt fresh at the end of my journey.

So Audi's is it the car, the brand or have unfortunately Audi attracted the wrong sort of "owner" I've seen a lot of comment about Audi drivers being *insert expletive of choice* here...

Is it mostly rep's in A3 & A4's or do the poor driving habbits extend to all types of Audi in general...

Audi's are new new BMWs in what fashion is concerned but I couldn't care less. Nevertheless they are beautifully engineered machines and they would be my first choice if I would care more about owning a more expensive car.

TBH it is the A3/4's mainly, it was the group that 3 series traditionally filled (When Mondeo man was mondeo man)

The A6 is an execs car and are normally driven appropriately (unless its an RS6 then it mandatory give it a bootful).
Still would have one

It's because of what Jeremy Clarkson said on Top Gear about BMW drivers giving way to Audi drivers as D!cks.

Dads A6.....everyone flippin loves it!!

Although, it now has a pet name.....dads boat
Theres two plugholes in the engine bay, underneath where the battery lives. They get blocked with crap, and it holds water.....................lots of water.....about 3 gallons of water....one day you will suddenly find lots of water sitting in your passenger footwell, and when you go round corners, it threatens to fly over the hump where the gear stick is!!!! It sneakily pours in through the pollen filter, and you find water water everywhere. It will make your alarm stop working, it will leave your hazard lights lit permanently and embarrassingly when you leave work. You open up the bonnet and find your battery with only an inch left before it drowns in water.

Did I mention they like to hoard water?

Until you unblock the plughole, watch out Audi owners....the waters coming for you!

Everyone loves dads car, hes had it since 2002, its the comfiest thing ever, like a pair of old slippers, its the best hes ever had, and hes had some right old sheds, it looks as new as the day he bought it.

And hes not a typical Audi owner either ;)

I used to have an Audi A4 and I'd definitely have another. I've got zero interest in cars but there's no doubt they're a well put together bit of kit. Great to drive and comfy.

The only problem is they cost a lot of cash if you want something well specced (I can't be bothered even turning on my own lights and wipers these days :p).

They've got a very good product so there's a lot more of them on the road these days and they've become the company car of choice in place of the BMW.

Just like BMW's in the 80's and 90's, not every Audi driver is a ****, but all the ****s seem to be driving Audis. :)

I don't think you can say it's just fashion or wanting to be seen - you could say that if they were actually a crap car but, by any objective measure, that's just not the case.

They make canny cars. Still prefer my BMWs though. A little better built and prices are rock bottom vs Audi. I just picked up a 70k mint 545 for 6k bargain.
My bro likes them tho. He has two and a mate of mine just bought a v8 a8 In place of an m3 but I'm betting it gets stuck in the snow as it's on 20s

if its an astra or an audi i always stay well back and let them get on with it as most i have come across have been asswipes. audi drivers dont know what indicators or mirrors are and astra drivers think the roads are a race track but both have the same attitude which is 'i'm better that you'. its a shame as audi's are feckin great cars.

Nowt wrong with them, my bad road experiences seem to be mainly with mercs.
I do get annoyed if im driving about at school run time and the bloody women in X5's, X6's and Q6's (or whatever they are called) blocking roads dropping their kids off and cant drive them for toffee.

Audi are great cars IMO. Expensive, but nice.

Next car will probably be an A4+ or 3 series. Don't care what people think, jog on!

On my 5th Audi. A lovely A6 saloon, with that gorgeous new car smell.

C1 or A6....mmm, tough one. I do about 30k miles a year.... and its comfortable.

Is it a car that people like to be seen in? I've not really thought about it but to put it in context would you like to be seen on a GSXR 1000 or a Chinese/Korean 125. ...

I'm trying to get the other 0.5 to like Audi....

the last car I bought her new was the Volvo V40 back in 1998 which she still has... so I'm thinking....................
can't say to be honest... I hope she likes the VW toerag as I call it... (touareg) :0)
Love Audi's but never owned one as yet....

but what I really really really want is this...

I think this is a little bit of chicken or egg.....
Audi and BMW both make great cars that perform well, are comfortable to drive, and reliable. As such they are going to attract not just the discerning driver (us....) but also the big mileage users who sometimes have all the pressures that such habits bring and who allow them to influence how they treat anything that gets in their way, ie: other traffic..... The other way to look at is that expensive cars are bought by successful individuals who didn't get to be where they are in life by being soft and cuddley......

Either way I know that on my 100 mile a day commute I would much rather be in my 330 than my other half's Fabia, or our MX5. Both great cars, but neither as relaxing or stress free as the BMW.

+1 having seen these on the road driving between stage starts on the British Rally? Fire belching from the exhaust, amazing.

Unfortunately I know too many Audi A3/A4 driving knobs, appreciate the build quality, but the type of driver they attract reminds me of XR3, Golf & Saxo drivers, just a bit more posh (note this doesn't include you Fizz :p). In one case the owner thinks he is posh because he drives one.

Having had a Saab 900 I do like cars that are built well, but I just can't bring myself to buy one. I'd have another saab no problem.

When it's time to get rid of the M3 I will be looking at an Audi, preferably an A4 Avant 3.0 TDi Quattro, big comfy, lots of toys, decent milage, superb build quality and great in all weather.

I used to be of the mindset that the car maketh the w@nker but it's definitely the other way round.

I would have to agree with that - there's nothing wrong with Audis themselves. We nearly bought an A6 estate a few years back (ended up with a Volvo for the extra bootspace in the end) and it was nice, if a bit "look at my buttons" inside. They used to be driven by people who wanted the quality of a BMW but didn't want to be seen driving one. People who were happy to be a bit different (ironically, just like Saab drivers). Unfortunately, in true Life Of Brian fashion, you end up with a "we're all individuals" situation and suddenly they're everywhere.

Why were talking of audis, my mate has v6 diesel quattro A4 saloon for sale which has a knackered top end.

He spent £1500 having top end rebuild done with new valves then 3 months later the cam pulley disintegrated so he's cutting his losses and selling.

It's got full leather as well, think he's only after about £600, he was going to break it as he'd make treble that amount but he ain't got the time or heart to do it.

Any interest to anyone?

i am on my first BMW, and I have discovered exactly why BMW are still / used to be in the ****** chair...

my car looks evil, I can be 50 yards of the back of a car but they stop and let me past because they think i will try and drive through them, secondly the indicator thing, bmw indicators dont work... they sort of do, but thats why they turn off half way around the roundabout.

The reason for choosing BMW was the company car tax, whilst the price is high the co2's are much lower than the audi A4 so its much cheaper in tax.

To be honest, I dont give a rats **** what people think, I love the BMW and if I get the oppertunity to change it at three years (ina years time) I will push for a newer three series as they are a fantastic drivers car, much like the audi's and at the end of the day.. I am the one that has to drive it. :-)

nice car Fizz

Posted a link to this in the other thread. http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/reliability-survey-2011/258307.

What car don't seem to think the German exec's are reliable, and to my mind at least that means poor build quality. Are the Germans just pulling the wool over everyones eyes by making solid expensive interiors, nice panel fit and doors that go thunk, then sticking a badge with prestige on the front? Nice cars yes, good cars? Not according to this.

I certainly know a lot of unhappy BMW owners in my office, and I've been one myself in the past. Nobody will ever convince me that a BMW is a good car.

I did a lot of research into reliability lately as I wanted a car to keep 5 years and over 100,000 miles and I looked at the 5 series, A6 and Passat, and I decided upon a Toyota. There isn't a single Japanese manufacturer outside the top 10.

Not quite sure what all those figures mean, I do know that in 4 years and 90,000 miles I have so far spent less than £100 on fixing my 330 BMW (low pressure fuel pump packed in). I've obviously done the consumables such as oil and filters, plus a set of brakes, but they're a doddle to work on and it's never been near a dealer. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I think they eventually changed the part design in 07/08 and its a £600 repair for one PCB and sensor (i think)

There is nothing new here.

34 years ago when I was a boy my friend's Dad had an Audi and my Clarkson-like Father often make accusations of onanism about the bloke related to his car choice.

Having said that my Dad was a Rover driver and those were the real man's car of the time (or at least so my Dad said )

Not quite sure what all those figures mean

The link explains how the data was measured and what it means. It is data from Warranty Direct based upon how many claims they pay out, so relates to cars over 3 years old. Warrant Direct is one of the biggest aftermarket warranty suppliers, so they can provide meaningful data.

I think I was unlucky with my 3 series (E46 320d Touring), it was in for about 10 different claims under manufacturers warranty, from water leaks to broken seat mechanisms, to electrics, then one week after it's third birthday the turbo collapsed and the engine went cataclysmic, £8300 repair bill. Having said I was unlucky, out of about 20 BMW's in my office in that 3 year period, there were about 8 turbo failures.

The fuel pumps, both low pressure as with your car, and high pressure on the twin turbo diesels, seem to be the latest major issue. No car should be left with a fault that could either be dangerous, or leave you stranded at the side of the motorway, when it's a common fault that the manufacturer knows all about. BMW are very reluctant to issue expensive recalls.

I'll stick with my free Vivaro Van ta very much. Get as much as i like in it and i don't pay for a bloody thing on it. Which is why i can afford my Triple now too :D

So shove your audi's and beemers but both are as bad as each other for company car drivers but don't argue with the vivaro.

But not general Landie & Range Rover drivers but mums on the school run, with their Prada handbags, etc and Company CEO's on their way to a meeting intimdating you as they sit up your chuff at 85.

Note to Dizzy & Stretchie the reference to Landie divers does not mean you :p

Didn't know that!. However, have to agree, 'das boat' the old one maybe, but my dad can't think of anything he'd swap it for either. It just never seems to age:)

Brothers got BMW 118, its nice to look at, can only fit two people in the back(personally I wouldn't have got it having two kids to ferry about, and the occasionaly 3rd), gearbox is really poor and feels fragile, my mothers Y reg Ford Focus seems better!! Not worth the money and a bit disappointing.....good job its one of those company lease thingies that you swap every three years.

I had one of the very early Audi100 ls models, bought used and then driven seven days a week until it had over 200k miles on it.This at the time when the equivalent Ford would do just over 100k and be looking for a new engine.Later I had a coupe straight five engine,an 80,and a 2.6 80 coupe.I think they got less robust over the years. The old ones were better.
