View Full Version : Your favourite stretch
If you were to pick one stretch of road from all the ones you have ever been on, what would it be?
Mine (although boring to most of you) is the road from Balmoral - Braemar.
I quite like the smoothish surface and the long sweeping bends.
Would have to be A712/A702 from Newton Stewart - New Galloway - Moniaive - Elvanfoot. 60 glorious miles of blacktop.
(except the crappy bit outside NS that they have just sprayed and chipped:smt013)
I'm off for a fortnight, so think I'll do end to end next week.
The Kinlochleven loop, the A82 along Loch Ness and most of the roads on the west coast :king:
Watch out if you're around Braemar and heading this way :plod:
would have to be this:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=A86&daddr=A889&hl=en&ll=56.946847,-4.516068&spn=0.282753,0.891953&sll=56.95677,-4.197807&sspn=0.141339,0.445976&geocode=FaogZAMdovm0_w%3BFfaBZAMdCFe__w&vpsrc=6&mra=me&mrsp=1,0&sz=12&t=m&z=11
but i have a lot of favourite roads and its so hard to choose.

Probably loch rannoch for me
Probably loch rannoch for me
I blame this on the Falco, but I don't enjoy that road, looks kinda similar to the roads posted in Bibio's OMG (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=171500)thread.
Somehow, I need the road to be wide enough for 2 cars or have the dividing line painted.
Like this one for example: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Gibraltar&daddr=36.2544108,-5.4381864+to:Ronda,+Spain&hl=en&ll=36.689896,-5.219879&spn=0.206477,1.056747&sll=36.744386,-5.166321&sspn=0.911156,2.113495&geocode=FQ1rJwIdom-u_yk1vhQndr8MDTEPhwA2JiVOOA%3BFcoyKQIdFgWt_ymHkEKS CekMDTFRY_h2_WMEEw%3BFUqjMAIdtCqx_ymtXwOFRjENDTE0t g20n4e4CQ&vpsrc=6&mra=ls&t=m&z=11&layer=c&cbll=36.678925,-5.212016&panoid=PJ5kRAnv5aZuxch4Yz-R7g&cbp=12,204.62,,0,9.3&via=1 :smt077

Oban to Ullapool - A82 & A835
Usually do this in 1 hit when we tour Scotland, About 155 miles of riding heaven - scenery, roads, historical monuments. intertwined with sleepy villages where you can stop of for a stretch or some food.
As Ewan McGregor once said "ooohhh!!, I love it"

There's something about single lane roads that I just get on with. Sounds crazy but it's the added excitement of having to concentrate even more to stay within like 4 foot of road in the corners
That road in Spain looks amazing but they look like much faster corners. I prefer the constantly flicking corners like rannoch or clova, where you hardly get about 40/50mph. Mostly because I don't particularly like cornering at high speed, but also it's because you are cornering and changing direction so much that you never have a chance to come out of "the zone" and get distracted like on a straight.
With roads like that I 'feel' like I'm getting closer to the fastest speed possible for that road (obviously I'm not saying that's what I'm doing, I'm not that fast a rider), where as high speed roads I usually lose my nerve or the bike doesn't have the power to keep up with the faster bikes on the straights
big sweeping A roads are fun but too easy. like Darren i prefer the more technical roads that keep you concentrating and you are lucky if you break the speed limit. straight roads are boring as feck as far as i'm concerned and i'll leave them to the Rossi wannabes.
I'm not that fast a rider
don't put yourself down m8 your a faster rider than me

From my last visit in 1982
I seem to remember the road from my sisters house in Invergowrie - Cupar Angus - Blairgowrie - Glenshee Ski station being a nice ride out
Or similar but going to Pitlochry instead of Glenshee

Too many to choose just one, however:

It'd certainly make my top 10.

Couple more to throw into the mix would include:

Love Fort William to Mallaig and back, only problem is I had to keep stopping to enjoy the view.

Was just thinking, 'Ha, ha, look, all these so far are in Scotland!", then I saw what section I was in.
Anyway, my reply was going to be a Scottish road before I realised that.
For me it has to be a tie breaker between the Lecht/Tomintoul road, Lochearnhead to Crieff, or Tyndrum to Connell Bridge

Seems to me that after Fort William you can basically ride as fast as you like through breathtaking scenery until you run out of petrol. Press on to Ullapool, why don't you, and watch the sun set. Like this... (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Fort+William&daddr=Auchtertyre+to:Gairloch+to:Ullapool&hl=en&ll=57.359127,-5.234985&spn=1.999994,6.696167&sll=57.359127,-5.174561&sspn=1.999994,6.696167&geocode=FW78YgMdZwiy_ykbAxw3IzOJSDEhSFQI4z6gzQ%3BF akhagMdJMmq_ykTzKxdg5COSDFhAXyGnpGkXQ%3BFcy_cAMd6z up_ymH-NuJ32-OSDFdnoU_D3jLsQ%3BFVJ6cwMdu0yx_ylhs6e3-zCOSDENyMkBc5PEWQ&vpsrc=0&mra=ls&t=h&z=8)
But if we're narrowing it down to a stretch, I'd say Invergarry to Auchtertyre, although that's very harsh on Auchtertyre to Achnasheen. Do we really have to chose?

What about Lochgilphead to Oban? Northys "if anybody is going to die today" road
It is impossible to choose in Scotland.
But since Dean has widened it to Europe.....
