View Full Version : When to inform insurance of a new exhaust?
Good afternoon all,
Since blowing the engine on my SV I have returned to my CBR125 for commuting and the exhaust has rotted and snapped. Honda wanted £380 for a downpipe and silencer :smt108 so I bought this complete Venom system instead. http://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/productdetails.php?id=16106&ProdTypeID=&BikeID=1407&year=6143
On all the websites that sell this exhaust I can't see anything about performance enhancing so do I need to tell my insurers? Since having bought a new exhaust and on the lookout for a replacement SV, I'm trying to avoid at best the dreaded admin charges.

I would definitely ring them and tell them. When I called mine to tell them about the exhaust can and the tail tidy, they said they didn't want to know about any modifications unless it increases engine power by 8 or more horsepower.
But all insurance companies are different, so I'd definitely give them a ring.
I'd let them know, even if you didn't notice a power increase. You crash (Touch Wood You Don't) they can say there and then your insurance is invalid and they walk away with you paying the rest of your insurance out and for the bike.
Will do, thanks AZZ3R! Cool siggy too.
Cheers for the advice guys. Insurance told me to phone Motad and find out if it increased performance, Motad said no, its just a direct replacement. Insurance added to the policy and waivered the £25 admin fee without me asking and no charge - touch. I wonder if its because I keep ringing them about changing bikes from the SV and they know whatever I buy they can charge me hundreds so they're waiting for the big prize!!
hehe I hope you started the phone conversation with "Hypothetically..." :P

No, but I did today when I asked about switching my SV insurance to a Fazer!

Personally I wouldn't have told them, being as motad are just an OEM replacement and not performance enhancing. Same as replacing brake pads or tyres with aftermarket.

Kiggles, as long as you have a copy of your letter or email to the insurance co, that you can produce later if needed, then I would say it should be okay.

Do you have to cut the original pipe to put those Beowolf cans on? I'm looking at a K8 with one on although this model does increase performance, but the chap selling has the original.

yes the orginal exhaust has been cut to put the slip on for the sv650. but for the cbr the pipe hasnt been cut.
if the guy has original can, you can use a simple exhaust coupler from ebay to rejoin the orginal pipe back on. its just a bit of metal that over laps both sides and tightens on, good for MOT's (if you have no baffle on after market can).
Thanks Kiggles - test rode it yesterday and the exhaust sounds lovely! :p
