Hello all, I thought I would start this thread to keep all my future updates and junk in. The plans for the SV is that it will eventually become a dedicated track bike once I get my gixxer but for the time being plans are a total strip down and spruce up.

Received my freshly painted lowers and seat cowl which I test fitted before she gets SORNED later on this month.

Also fitted the blueflame which is VERY loud, but nice! All comments and criticisms gratefully received.

Nice. My favourite year curvy, with the graphite wheels and engine.

It looks pretty mint from those pics. If the track bike is a way off what's your plans for it just now?

Your garage is too tidy BTW.

Haha it's a strategic angle, you can't see the sh*t tip thats hiding behind me!

Plans are to strip her down, get the frame and swing arm powder coated flat black, get the wheels and fork stanchions powder coated and give everything a good steam clean, replace all the bearings and fasteners, basically a good old tidy.

After that just start collecting and fitting track focused parts, ie, brake lines, disks, shocks, fork springs, sprockets, levers etc etc. Keep it road legal until a have my new bike, then whip off anything I don't need, and perhaps bang on a track fairing?

Cheers

why not the gixxer for a track bike?

im with tam on the tidy garage. if there is a corner with out S*** in it. Then its to tidy. not to mention the amount of wall space you have with is in a nice white, with a tidy hose reel rather then having it all over your garden, and a nice shutter, with out any dents or marks............

ok

im jealous, give me garage and you will get good karma in return

just noticed the heater as well. YOU HAVE A HEATER!!!

srobrien

No the bike has a heater haha
Also no gixxer for track bike as it will probably be a fairly new/expensive bike and I am a fairly new/rubbish rider.

Have you got a price from the powdercoaters for the frame and swingarm?

Yeah I was quoted around £120 for both which I didn't think was too bad at all.

DarrenSV650S
17-10-11, 03:37 PM
That's not bad. Do they seal up the stem bearing recess' etc? Oh and what are you doing about the frame number sticker?

srobrien
17-10-11, 03:42 PM
Yeah they do quite a lot of frames so they said they would try and keep the coating out of bearing seats and the bolt threads which was nice..as for the VIN plate i knocked the heads off the rivets and will re-rivet it back on when I get the frame back (thats the plan anyway)

Small update....

Frame and Swingarm back from powdercoaters, excellent job.

Fitted new swingarm bearings and test fitted to the frame.

Dry fit of my ZX6R rear shock...ebay bargain at £40!

Modified my rear subframe to get rid of the tie down points and the pillion peg brackets (left half of one bracket to fit the high level exhaust). And given a few coats of satin rustoleum.

Managed to absolutly MULLER my exhaust trying to remove the stubs etc from the head..will have to send it off to a machine shop to get it sorted!!

Should get the brakes and shocks stripped down soon to send off to the powdercoaters.

UPDATE

Been seriously busy with the new house and working so not done much to the SV lately. I ordered a heap of parts when I was offshore so had lots of boxes waiting for me when I got home, including:

- Front/Rear Wheel Bearings
- R6 Throttle Tube and LH Grip
- Ting Tong Clutch and Brake levers
- Exhaust Wrap
- Probolt top yoke nut
- R&G Bar Ends
- Exhaust gaskets
- Iridium Spark Plugs

Sooooooo, I set about fixing the broken studs in the head, which was actually easier than expected. Managed to drill and retap them will little problem, fitted and secured the new studs.

While the engine was out a gave it a good scrub with various brushes and gunk degreaser. Then a few coats of Hammerite matt BBQ paint, which came out nice.

I then printed off the service manual (at work of course) and managed to decipher the instructions to get the engine back in the frame.

Then went in the start of the wiring loom

Then I realised I had trapped the alternator wire between the bottom of the engine and the frame

Then I got mad

Then I smashed some stuff up

Then I smashed some more stuff up

Then I cried a little

Then the engine came back out

Then I moved the cable

Then the engine went back in

And.......then I gave up for today before anything else got smashed up.

The bearings and tyres are off the wheels waiting to get powdercoated along with the sprocket carrier and the brake callipers (if I can get the sodding pistons out!)

So getting there slowly.

I am undecided how to finish it though..do I put the full fairings back on or do I streetfighter it? I like the SF look but can't be arsed putting handlebars on and fiddling about with the wiring.
Has anybody Streetfightered with the standard clip-ons?

Thanks for looking

Can't blame you for the smashing stuff up / crying I think I'd react similarly if I got my bike to that stage!

Aye, cafe racer stylee FTW.

You'll need to sort out a headlight and brackets, which is pretty straightforward. You'll also need to fab a bracket for the clocks and then decide what you're going to use - originals look a bit untidy on naked bikes IMO. SV Naked clocks look better (hen's teeth though) or something else like from a Bandit. Or aftermarket jobs if you're feeling spendy.

You will be messing about with wiring and there's a lot of loom to hide.

Cheers Tam, I have been reading your build thread for the 3rd time, it looks awesome and definitely gives me some inspiration. Not sure if I want to go "cafe racer" per se more SF but alot of similarities. I definitely think that I maybe want to go this way.

Clip-ons finished and cables attached.

Whilst I had the hammerite out I thought I would give the rotors a quick spruce up.

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u94/srobrien/6555eb4f.jpg

Brakes stripped down, pistons and seals removed.
Who needs a parts cleaner! (can you tell the missus works during the day!)

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u94/srobrien/50bd842b.jpg

Managed to wreck all the pistons when removing them but I had planned on changing them all anyway...what I hadn't planned on was them being £23 EACH!!....wish I had known that before I went crazy on them.

Anyway, just waiting on a replacement fuel valve and I am ready to try to start her up....fingers crossed!!

Did you need a special tool to get the swing arm off the frame btw?

srobrien

Yup but I made one out of an old socket and a dremel. I bought one for the engine adjusters, it was £12 from eBay.

Hi Fraser I went to PPS in inverurie, they are really good, couldn't recommend them enough. It cost me £120 for my wheels and 3 callipers. Only thing is with them is you need to mask off everything that doesn't get touched if not they will just coat the whole thing!

I actually sprayed my forks with hammerite smooth gold paint, it leaves a great finish and should be quite tough. I couldn't be arsed stripping down the forks.

gimmie a shout if you want to come and see anything.
