Well my Mum hasn't had palpitations since her operation, which is great news. I still want to see her doing well and recovering for a few more weeks, but it's looking more likely that my wife may be able to come than it was before xmas.

Really sorry guys not kept up with the thread, had a brief chat with Phil which reminded me - I'm still a maybe but could someone tell me when the majority of you are returning? just so I know 26th of April to when. I have a feeling my insurance expires 5th of may so I may well make this :)
Oh...and what happens if you break down abroad? (I have rescuemybike/car / NCI package which I'm sure covers eu)
Specialone

You won't break down :)
I have just messaged you on FB saying the same but there is a details thread up, showing campsite, ferry times etc etc.

Even if you do break down you've answered your own question. I use NCI as well.
If you break down the first bit works exactly the same as here. You phone NCI, a man with yellow flashy lights turns up, if he can't fix it he'll stick it on a trailer and take to a dealer. I think NCI will then supply you with a replacement vehicle (though possibly a car) or hop on pillion with one of us. If the dealer can't fix it before your scheduled ferry home, NCI will meet you at the ferry terminal with it, and take your replacement vehicle (not all providers will cover repatriation which is specifically why I use NCI, my car was once stuck in France for 3 months!). Someone at LD Lines will help you push it onto the ferry and off at the other end, and NCI will meet you at Portsmouth to recover you home.
That's the theory anyway.

One thing that was mentioned to me that might cause issue is this new rule for all vehicles in France will be required to carry breathalyzers from Spring onwards.
I am aware this link is from a van advice site, but it was the first link i came to when i googled it

Heard about this a while ago, whoever came up with needs a good shafting with an elephants foot.
What about if you're totally tee total and never touch a drop of alcohol? It will get used as much as a nuns c**t.
I wonder what country is the biggest supplier of these devices I wonder? France by any chance?
metalhead19
27-01-12, 10:33 PM
Yeh, guess thats something else we have to pack, as well as remembering to turn the sat-nag speed camera warnings off! Bloody french cant stop trying to make life more difficult for us British. First they surrender in WW2 and now they impose stupid new laws!
You make a good point actually, might be quite profitable for their economy......until everyone gets ****ed off and leaves.

These are the ones we need guys. I need to buy mine already, going to France in two weeks, want me to buy 12 and split the cost on the ferry? Will work out just over 2 quid per person, instead of 8 quid inc VAT & delivery to each buy a pack of 3 separately.

According to http://visitnormandy.wordpress.com/
Car Drivers
Compulsory to carry a breathalyser in the vehicle
The minister announced that from a date to be fixed (probably 1 April 2012) all cars must carry an alcohol breathalyser test.
So according to that cars only. Date to be fixed so I'm not even going to bother for my trip in the car in two weeks time. I'll buy a couple when I'm over there and avoid postage, then chuck them in my glovebox for the next trip.

portsmouth to le havre leaving portsmouth 11pm (thurs 26.4.2012) arriving in France 8am
le havre to portsmouth leaving 5pm frenchy time (30.4.12) arriving 9.30pm in england?
Can't say this confirms me coming as it's subject to work & cash but lookin' good :)

You do realise the boat is non refundable and non transferable. That means you loose your money now if you don't go (55 quid?).
The campsite is going to be about 5 quid a night, for 3 nights, £15 quid.
It 350 miles from Sheffield to Caen, so that's £100 quid in fuel return trip, plus we'll probably use another £30 quid max whilst we are over there.
Food we can do as cheap or as expensive as people need/want to. Local cafe's and bistro's in France are not expensive if you avoid the real tourist hotspots, and something like a Pizza will only be a few quid more than a McDonalds and a hundred times nicer. I don't mind cooking on a disposable BBQ at the campsite for a few nights, or we buy a BBQ in a supermarket, split the cost (couple of euro's each) and we bin it before coming home.
So by paying for the ferry already, your a 1/4 of the way there.
All in all I think the trip is easily possible on £200, plus food & drink.
What's wrong with your bike?
Dave20046
29-01-12, 01:49 PM
Cheers Ralph, I should be able to afford it (aslong as nothing else goes wrong!) now that I know I don't need to buy insurance just for the trip (current policy expires 14.05.12). It all counts on work.
Yep I realised it's non-refundable , just thought I'd take the plunge to force myself to get my ar5e in gear :)
Alarm's finally given in (i've been down to one remote for over a year then nursed it for a few months with just the chip a battery and a short piece of wire) time to get it ripped out :D Then I need to fit a battery and service it, but it's a biggy and not sure I'll have time so may be a job for a garage/YC.
Apart from that it's good to go, although I might need a more sleek/usable luggage solution as that's one thing that ****es me off about travelling on it
-Ralph-
29-01-12, 01:54 PM
I'll help you service an SV in a couple of hours in exchange for coffee. Would need to be one evening on my way back from Leeds. Then you could get YC or a garage to do the valve clearance checks.

Cheers for the offer ralph, really appreciated, but I'm happy to do (almost said 'proficient at'!) everything but the valve shimming (if it needs it). But I haven't got the time to strip it, find it needs the valves doing, put it back together and then pay a garage to do it all. Will get the valves checked, service it, give it some TLC - mais oui!

Is anyone taking a camping stove? Mine is one of these, and it's not the smallest thing to be taking on a bike
http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/public/TcWGX9fSxonVrfP7RCYXnoncF_ZitwvFKqQk14EFeu7c_WdbRr _mffgSDPcnzV9D1fEqPydPO37qXCwC8vQOPGjVtuEC-k_LUoFXHyOy4uxAfepsqog8O-q2iK5-BB4KMxeH31aN5hW6c02SUl1_WY7gfdZCAY8V-7IcrNInHg
I also have a 12v kettle which takes no space because you fill it with stuff that would have been taking space anyway. It takes about 15 minutes to boil though (the camping stove is quicker) and I don't know how well a bike battery would cope with it (ECU on my Daytona gets all upset about low voltage).
I ask because I can't survive without coffee in the morning.
Dave20046
29-01-12, 05:14 PM
I might bring one actually, I have one of those ones the size of a tennis ball...it's just the gas cannister they screw onto that can take up a bit of room. Will sort my luggage solution first.

Joking aside I enjoy a cup of tea and it is a little one cup flask to keep my milk in as I can't stand powdered milk---it sits inside my tin mug when not in use,so inconjunction with a tincture for the tea at the end of the day a necessary pair of items.

Should we be doing more planning than we are doing? Or will we just take a map play it by ear?
What I would like to sort before we go is stuff we can share so we can carry less. For instance we don't need 10 airbed pumps, 10 gas stoves, 10 puncture repair kits, etc.

Yeah good point Col.
I'd like the bulk of the planning, route wise, to be done beforehand so as I mentioned before we can put the sites into areas and then visit 1 area per day.
I'd appreciate taking as little equipment as possible tbh as I've gotta take clothes etc for two of us.
I'll defo take my burner, kettle and mess tins, dan said he'd take his so kettle wise that will cover us all.
We're gonna need at least 1 puncture repair kit ( I have one)
Allen keys,
Sockets and driver,
Screwdriver set, reversible one will do.
Airbed pump
Everybody needs to bring a mug or cup.

Your own stuff is a given, only communal stuff needs to be mentioned
Back on the serious discussion...
I've got a small first aid kit which I'll take so that's another off the list.

As in all good survival kits a "CONDOM" except for the obvious emergency? to use as a water/liquid carrier and a funnel.

Think i'll ignore the condoms John, they might get the wrong idea ;)
Anyway...
Things we need in order of priority...
1. kettle and burner- Dan and myself will each take ours, so that should cover us.
2. Mess tins, Again i'll take mine, maybe Dan too?
3. Tyre pressure gauge, again i'll have it in the pocket of my tank bag, another one wouldnt hurt?
4. Tools, a, selection of sockets upto 13mm i guess?
b, selection of sockets upto 8mm i guess?
c, any specific tools to your bike, to adjust chain, spark plug
spanner etc then bring yourself.
Sv guys can sort their specific ones between them?
5. Air bed pump-only one of these needed, i have one but prefer someone else to take theirs tbh.
6. Peg mallet- Dan metalhead said he's got one so well volunteered.
7. First aid kit- Ive got one which i'll take.
8. Puncture repair kit- 1? I could take mine at a push, but again prefer not to.
9. Mini tyre compressor? is it worth taking one of these as we'll have 18 tyres between us to keep upto pressure.
10. Chain Lube- All chip in for a can but somebody else carries it?
11. Gaffa tape
12. cable ties
13. 0.5 litre of engine oil- Suppose could buy some from a garage if needed?
Please add to the list if you wanna volunteer to carry any of the above or can think of anything else.

1. kettle and burner- Dan and myself will each take ours, so that should cover us.I'll take another, I have a habit when camping of getting up at daybreak, and I'll want coffee straight away
2. Mess tins, Again i'll take mine, maybe Dan too?I might take more, cooking for 9...?
3. Tyre pressure gauge, again i'll have it in the pocket of my tank bag, another one wouldnt hurt? I'll take another

This is where I think we can really benefit by cutting down to only what we can fit under the seat. I don't particularly want to leave tools in the tent during the day, neither do I want to be carrying heavy tools in my tankbag, so it's under the seat only. If we all carry something different we should manage to do that and still have a good range of tools.
(remember after dropping the XT in the river Phil, if we hadn't had different tools in each kit we'd have been stuffed, we used stuff from both)
I'll bring a socket set if someone else who has lockable hard panniers or top box can carry it during the day?
I will take my own spark plug spanner, but see no reason why the SV or Sprint guys can't share.
SV guys don't forget you need a large socket (24mm?) and breaker bar to adjust your chain? (has anyone done it without a breaker bar? Can you tighten to enough torque without a breaker bar?). If you need one that's perhaps something only one of you wants to have to carry (wee tip, slide it inside your tent bag along with your tent poles). I doubt I'll even need to adjust mine in the space of 1000 miles, but it's the kind of thing that suddenly has a massive stretch and catches you out if unprepared. Having to find a garage to adjust a chain is a real ball ache.
Triumph and Viffer guys just need an ordinary socket/ring spanner to adjust the eccentric adjuster. I have no intention of carrying the massive, heavy and expensive 46mm socket for the rear wheel, that's what the breakdown cover is for.
5. Air bed pump-only one of these needed, i have one but prefer someone else to take theirs tbh.I'll take another, and it will be battery powered because my air bed is going on the ferry with me. So if yours is 12v Phil, that would be good for use at the campsite, with mine as backup.

Col, we don't need a socket set as such, I just put loose sockets in my cubby hole box in my front fairing.
Loose sockets and Allen keys can be split across us all, I'll take my trumpet kit as it's already in there.
Regarding the kettle, rather than take another, you can just put mine in your tent so use it first, makes no difference to me.

I'll have the large socket. I have done it without a breaker bar by jumping up and down on the handle. Not ideal, but it got me home.
Could also put a roll of hex keys in. There are a couple missing, but where there's a metric missing I have a near equivalent imperial - again not ideal, but ok for an emergency.

I've actually got 1/4 inch drive socket Allen keys, which I could shove loose in my cubby hole, if someone takes a driver.
Won't have any trouble without a breaker bar, I've got mans strength ;)
I suspect if our chains are checked / adjusted before we go I can't see them needing adjusting in another 1k miles.
I never adjusted mine in 2100 miles in France, in fact I've never adjusted mine full stop.

OK on all counts.
If you bring sockets, bring the ratchet as well. I can just envisage ending up with a load of 3/8" drive sockets and a 1/2" ratchet
I have a very compact 1/4 inch set for all sockets 10mm and below, so I'll bring that, takes zero space, I actually keep it all loose in a spectacle case.
I also have a magnetic T handle and a full set of driver bits that lives under the seat of the Daytona permanently, so we are sorted for screwdrivers and Allen keys. Allen keys in tight spots that the t handle won't get to I use the bit, and a 1/4" socket to drive the bit.
