Wanted VW T4 2.5 TDI Van or day van, caravelle, ex AA 5 seater etc.
Full fat 2.5 TDI.
Must be able to get a bike in the back.
In good condition, rot boxes need not apply.

What have you got and what do you want for it?

Whilst I can't help, I've been offered a cheap '800 special' 1.9 diesel transporter.
I know nothing - do they suck big ones?

Tim in Belgium
13-10-11, 09:00 PM
The smaller engine is fine, but I want POWAH for continental trips, 80+ crusing speed will be good when I'm late for the tunnel

Mr Speirs

Pfft. I have been spending a lot of time looking for a VW T4 or T5!! Couldn't justify the cost of a good condition T4 over a good condition T5.

For example a good condition T4 2.5 will still go for around 4k whereas there are some good condition T5's going from anywhere from 5k. In fact someone of the VW forum got a T5, low mileage 1.9 102bhp version for £3900. But I reckon he was incredibly lucky.

Will keep my eyes peeled on the VW van forum

Caravelles go for a premium. ex AA/kombis are the ones to go for but again go for a premium.
Normal panel vans are still good but obviously you have the van speed limits to stick to.

Mr Speirs
13-10-11, 09:11 PM
Oh and whats yours budget?

Tim in Belgium
13-10-11, 09:35 PM
Yes ;)

It depends what people have to offer. Although I'm out of the price range for fully pimped campers.

Form and functionality over style for me. A clean 2.5 TDI. A few interior bits would help but not required. Bike needs to fit in.

Get on the VW forums, I think they advise people to favour the 1.9 over the 2.5 due to reliability issues, and you can chip the 1.9 easily.

Tim in Belgium
14-10-11, 05:56 PM
2.5 seems the way to go from the advice I had on there. The one I was going to look at this evening has already sold :(

There's a nice one 80 miles that I may go and check out tomorrow...

Pt6 must be busy along with one of the T4 forum mods on here.
The thread should give you a good heads up

From the bus forum:

It is a 800 special, so has the nice extra bits, and has 6 months of MOT and Tax

Here are the following mods:

Exterior - Full respray in merc curpite bown metalic, ie including door shuts. It is a lovely colour which changes colour depending on the light as well as having a nice gold flake to it. The van is lower on 60mm (i think, could be lower) springs and the Bad Guys shorter shocks. It has a set of Audi RS4 lipper wheels whith 225/40/18 tyres with good thread left. The sliding door rail was also painted black. A tinted sliding window installed behind drivers seat, as well as roof bars.

Interior - Forgot to add van has full remote central locking and VW electric windows plus sliding side window added. All plastics been painted either cream to match carpet lining or brown to match exterior. You wont find any of the borring grey in this van. Rear has been insulated, ply lined and carpeted in cream. Roof has been ply lined and carpeted. Also has the styline b pillar kit and sliding door cover. Front area carpeted in cream and the a black overmat to keep it clean. New steering wheel, shifer, stereo and 6x8 speakers in the boot as well as upfront, boost and rev gauge as well as battery monitor. 3/4 r&r bed foamed and covered but not shown in pictures.

Plus loads of others i cant remember.

Sorry rock and roll bed not pictured as was using van to move some stuff so, the buty of it its so light you can easily take it out, and then i chucked in some old carpet and scrap from when the van was carpeted to protect/cover the good carpet underneath.

Price drop to 4k

For some reason it won't copy across the photos but it is a very tidy very clean van. Although is the 1.9 version.

Now is definately the time to buy one!
I sold a fully specced T4 2.5 recently for £6k, it owed me £11k and it hadnt even been campered yet! Full engine rebuild, brand new turbo, sensors, remapped, bigger injectors,de-cat etc etc. Would've been a 9k Van a year ago to that spec, but we are firmly in a buyers market at the mo!

Get yourself over to vwt4forum.co.uk and have a butchers, plenty about on there :)

I want a full fat 102 bhp TDI :D Had a look on the T4 forum and registered up. Only need a van, no need for camper interior as more space for bikes the better, although the option of an extra 2/3 seats in the back would be good

Well I've gone and put a deposit down on an ex-AA 2.5 TDI Kombi :p

Looking forward to picking it up later in the week. A few little jobs to do, fit a stereo and speakers, touch up a few paint patches that have scratches/chips. And maybe fit a styleline bed if they're still available

Does anyone know the colour code for the dark green stripe on the bottom of AA vans?

Also can you buy the AA jump leads, as it still has the sockets front and rear?

Not too bothered about lowering the vanat the moment! Got the MX-Gay fir that and then there's the daily E-36 touring sled which is too low for its own good, and needs to go ideally.

Get cruise control fitted. Can you get aftermarket cruise control?? Is it a good system that integrates into the ECU/brakes/clutch like OEM or some stepper motor type thing that works on the throttle cable or summat else? A link would be appreciated.

Tim in Belgium
20-10-11, 11:54 AM
You can retro fit the standard VW cruise control, just get the stalk then it's plug and play, just need to activate the ECU with a VAGCOM or some such gubbins.

Project Yellow has been progressing.

Firstly I have been adjusting my driving style to Van driving. This means I no longer need to use my mirrors, can beep the horn at attractive ladies and generally ignore the welfare of other road users, makes life a lot less hassle. I have started to fill the various trays and boxes full of pay and display tickets, half finished packets of sweets etc.

As winter is on its way I've decided I'm going to get a set of winter tyres, and thought some 15" steels would be better than my 16" alloys, both from a cost point of view and wear and tear. So I got this set of 4 off ebay, also off an ex-AA "Bang" Bus.

http://inlinethumb11.webshots.com/46474/2751263110084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2751263110084392296sAgZhF)

Now to source some cheap but not crappy winter tyres with a sufficient load rating.

The van came with an old VW stereo with buttons missing, only two speaker outlets and no speakers. So I dropped by a car stereo shop and after the salesman quickly sized up my holes (oooer..) I came out with the following:

http://inlinethumb21.webshots.com/48276/2883854300084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2883854300084392296VvRiKh)

The fronts speakers are orange, the backs are grey. The stereo is a Pioneer, back in the day it was Pioneer or Alpine for the XR/SRI crew, so I knew this had to be a quality bit of kit. Plus I can plug my Ipod in.

Firstly the old unit came out:

http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/16260/2158017440084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2158017440084392296UeATQy)

Leaving a hole:

http://inlinethumb54.webshots.com/49717/2789719380084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2789719380084392296IuEuFP)

The iso block worked, apart from the fact there was no link for the speaker cables that went from the back to the front under the floor on the vehicle side.. I identified the cables using a little 9v battery, cut the corresponding cables off the unit's iso block and spliced them in.

After many trips to Halfords for connector spades and bullets and some self tapping screws the professional install was in.

http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/48440/2478361370084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2478361370084392296vQMzrM)

And my favourite part of the install, I let the front speakers nestle down just off centre then banged in some self tappers, I'm born to grace the ICE/Show and Shine scene with this level of innovation:

http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/44786/2238864580084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2238864580084392296XgDSpD)

The one on the otherside is offset slightly differently

And the rears, a little better as the previous owner had left me some cout outs and mounting clips in place:

http://inlinethumb55.webshots.com/49910/2433024730084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2433024730084392296pMOYbY)

They look kind of lost! Close up:

http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/13954/2700678780084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2700678780084392296rdlOCk)

it all sounds pretty good which is the main thing, an old sub box that came free in the BMW may also find its way in their to solid up the bass.

I also found out how to fold the back seat, it makes a useful work surface:

http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/47086/2550444010084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2550444010084392296nRJeyX)

My only other adventurs was a visit to Morrisons. I discovered that my van with extractor unit is not less than 2m high  A bit of reversing for me and a nice queue of Saturday shoppers soon had that sorted  Perhaps I should lower it slightly after all...

I Collected the "Dubflectas" from the post office and fitted them there and then incorrectly in the car park. Came back to dog sitting tonight and fitted them properly so they don't fall out when I wind the windows down. The difference in tint isn't so severe in daylight. Pimp my ride.

Project Yellow had its camping shake down this weekend, I left Reading late evening and headed towards the Gower for a spot of surfing.

To equip it for such an audacious undertaking I did the following:

Chucked in surf board and wetsuits.
Pulled out camping carrier bag (gas stove/kettle/camping mug/camping utensils etc)
Chucked in a tesco thermarest, sleeping bag and duvets.
Bought a pint of milk.

I then drove to Wales, and parked up at my new secret camping spot, unrolled the thermarest, had a beer, read a few pages then slept.

Woke up to a van with minimum condensation (that roof whirly gig thing must work).

Put the kettle on:

http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/46240/2811681510084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2811681510084392296iKIubT)

I then marvelled at the sliding door:

http://inlinethumb49.webshots.com/46832/2014899660084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2014899660084392296gaILxS)

And said hello to a dog walker before putting on more kettlage for my (instant) porridge.

http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/19618/2301649020084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2301649020084392296dJHvfo)

A set up Westfalia would be jealous of.

The dog walker returned, had a quick chat and checked to see if I needed any water (no nimbyism here).

I then marvelled at the view of the marshes.

http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/49466/2453889210084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2453889210084392296LURVih)

Before taking a pic of the secret camp spot and the camouflaged van, can you spot it?

http://inlinethumb50.webshots.com/49393/2698806580084392296S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2698806580084392296Nzeigh)

Had some fun in the surf, it was chunky. And sunny :thumleft:

Stopped off for some roast salt marsh lamb and cruised back to Berkshire, cutting the cruising speed has resulted in some epic mpgage, should be on for 40+!!

The van is still ace but could do with a wash now.

And a hoover to get some of the sand out.

PS, any chance a MOD could change this thread title to Project Yellow?

As for the paint chips, I think I'll be putting Stan out of a job, as I did these myself (note impeccable colour match acheived by picking randomn spray can from motorworld):

Plan is to change the bottom green to satin black, so this shouldn't be a long term issue.

Did a trip to the 'Ring in January to get the R1 out there, did a few cheeky cold laps:

Then spring, so 1 sticker stuck:

And one dash tidy complete with cup holes stuck on, will be testing this out in the near future:

Since then it's been to the 'Ring a bit:

A night offroading trip through the woods and fields was not captured on film.
Did a spot of tripoding (just):

Did an 11:30ish BTG quite happily with some damp and taking it easy on the brakes:

It even made it onto German TV! Although the feed has now been deleted

More laps:

It's also done some vanning stuff, resorting to it's former life as a recovery truck:

And acting as a mobile storage space as I lived out of more hotels in June and July.

I decided it deserved a bit of a clean (on the outside anyway):

Since then I've used it for a bit of surfing, and took it to France for a week to transport a whole load of boards and my spearfishing gear, although the surf was pretty flat:

Next plans are some sort of comfy sleeping arrangement for weekend surf trips, probably a few bits of ply, some 2x4 and a mattress will suffice, but nothing too pucka.

Fuel economy has wavered between 30-40mpg depending on cruise velocity and number of Ring laps per tank for the saddos out there!

PS, any chance a MOD could change this thread title to Project Yellow?

Tim, VERY jealous.

Roughly how many nights have you slept in it this year?

Very little time slept in the van, a few couple of hour stints across the front seats waiting for ferries around midnight. Plan a few more once I get a mattress in the back, and some surf/spear fishing trips up to Northumberland and beyond.
