I enjoy listening to covers on youtube.
Most are not so good and some are so bad you wonder why there are not laws against people with so little talent posting music on the web.
However, every now and then you find a real diamond amidst the stones.
Just found this one last night. Very good.

not very current I know, but then I never claimed to be trendy
original by Lori Lieberman in 72
Made her own the following year by Roberta Flack
and finally by Lauryn Hill of the Fugees in 1996

not sure that's what you ment Bill, but I enjoyed comparing them just now and it is a cover twice over.
Cheers Mark.

Can't play your vid in the US Mark, but yes any cover played well whether it's in the same style as the original or not.
I'm not that trendy either but here's one I like that someone (?) posted on the org a while back.

to be honest as I love the 50's & 60's I could post up all day as at that time just about all the major recording stars covered everyone else's work.
Cheers Mark.

Landslide. I prefer it to the original Fleetwood Mac. Reason, because I seriously heard the Pumpkins version before I ever heard the original!

Satisfaction (I can't get me no) - Devo.
I just love that tune it's wrong but so right. its so different from the Rolling Stones version. Dunno if there's a you-tube video of it out there can't check at work.
Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash.
Harrowing, just harrowing, but lovely for it.
The Passenger by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Better than Iggy's original IMHO.

I thought I was the only person who knew that version, so much so that I even wondered if I imagined it! Now you've reminded me again and I've looked it up on YouTube and it is STILL one of the very best covers ever!

Then there is this. Eva did so many covers and so many are much better known than this, but it's the one I always sing to myself when I think of her...

i would class Eva Cassidy as one of the greatest female singers of all time. she was pitch perfect.

I prefer his version to the Nine Inch Nails original or even Kermit's version (which is still very good). For me its the performance unlike some 'singers' who are really just glorified Karaokeists, he is singing the song and meaning every word. Listening to this got me listing to some of Cash's other work and Live at Folsom Prison is a must listen to album.

squirrel_hunter is spot on with Johnny Cash's version of Hurt - one of the most emotional pieces of music ever recorded.
For sheer stupidity, I love Lawnmower Death's cover of Up The Junction.
Anything written by Bob Dylan is usually better recorded by anybody else.
Can't remember who wrote the original of Ain't No Love (In The Heart Of The City) but the Whitesnake Choir in full song is pretty hard to beat.

Is she dead? :( What a gorgeous voice.
She died in 1996. She only really became well known in the UK after someone sent Terry Wogan her recording of Over the Rainbow. He played it and the radio station was inundated with enquiries about who that amazing singer was.
Apart from bringing me to tears most of the time I listen to her, I do believe she had one of the very best female voices ever.

+1 for Fields of Gold. It was played at the funeral of a guy I served with and still makes me cry every time I hear it. He was one of my best mates and we got into some right scrapes! Association of ideas I suppose.
Also a major +1 for Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. Its just superb. Made all the more poignant by the fact that he apparently recorded it just weeks before his death.
For my own choice - ie not piggy-backing onto someone elses choice - it would have to be Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit. Every bit as good as The Who's version. Wonder what Pete Townsend thought of Fred Durst's take on it?
