Has anyone got experiences of using a home kit and dyeing alloy?

I checked these out too, but then discovered the price of powder coating. Getting my rear footpegs and hangers done will cost under £20 and powder coating will last longer than anodizing too.
Although it would be nice to anodize bolts and small bits myself. What were you thinking of anodizing?

Was thinking of the fork legs ,brake calipers.and heel plates .

Hasn't one of the comics just done an article on this?
Will try to find it but Mrs puny has a habit of ' tidying up ' which may mean it's binned.
My turn next?

Yes Ride magazine did an article.

Their advice was only for small stuff, so heel plates would be ok.

Fair bit of nasty chemicals involved too.

But you're not far from Maldon shot blasting & powder coating who did a nice job on my swingarm, side stand, etc.

I'm going to take some more bits there this winter.

Powder is completely different from anodising.
I think powder is probably better on cast stuff.

All you need to anodise is a power supply and sulfuric acid.

Hmmm...this opens up a few options now. What do you use to make the colour?

It's all on ebay. THe Kit the colour (red).

Seen some nasty accidents with anodizing - but that was on an industrial scale. You still want to be careful though.

I got a sulphuric acid burn on the n*ts many years ago that was enough to put me off messing with the stuff. :smt103

Dye.
Do some googling :)

What are the regulations on disposal of this kind of waste once the kit is finished with? I take it that if it contains hazardous chemicals, chucking it down the drain/toilet is out of the question and I am not sure that my local recycling centre are set up for it (they had enough trouble with an arm chair!).

Could be quite interesting as a home kit for small stuff, but anodised bits can look quite tacky, fairly quickly when the dye fades.

Practical Sportsbikes did Zinc Plating the other month, similar process. Positive results.

IMO it will never be as good as a pro job so just let them do it, same as chemical blacking and as Tam said, safer.

You'd be better off getting good at it and then setting a store up on here.
That'd make you money never mind saving you money.

Still... its not for me though :)

The dye was a household product ( like Colron, but just can't remember ) so you can do your leathers the same as your shiny bits.

maviczap

Can you do tie dye your shiny bits then ? (dylon is the product)

Dont use wheel worx in colchester, the quality of powder coating is crap, had my heel plates, brake torque arm and some other stuff done black, and found few blobby lumps.

shame I we didnt get chatting about it when we met up at the 8ball recently.

It cost me £30 cash for quite a few bits so was quite cheap I suppose.

About 15 years ago I regularly used a chap near hadleigh in suffolk (on raydon airfield to be precise) he was very good, and is still about. Does a lot of big jobs so can pop your bits in with them.

That was my only gripe with Maldon Shotblasting the turnaround was too long and my parts didn't get do until I'd chased the order.

But not expensive and a good job

wheel worx was only a week turnaround, I didnt bother complaining about the blobs as it was on undersides etc and i wanted to get the bike back together.
