View Full Version : keeps cutting out and engine blipping
hi, i have an sv650s 57 plate which keeps cutting out when at the lights or junctions and so on! also when I'm going along at low speeds it dips for a brief second on the revs then back up, any ideas or help would be great :) I'm wondering if it could need the carbs balancing???

It will not be the carbs as yours is a fuel injected bike, therefore has no carburettors.
When did it last have a service, by who and do you know what was done?
by carb balancing i was thinking throttle and valve synchronisation . it was last serviced about 10 month ago but not sure what was done as i didn't own her then :(

What mileage is the bike on now?. Throttle body balancing is due at the 7500m service and then again on the 14500m, so every other service.
Is yours a K6 or K7 model as the K7 has an idle speed control valve so the throttle body balancing can only be done if you have the SDS or OBD software. The idle on them is non adjustable.
Some bikes can be sensitive to throttle body balance, more than others. I had a GSXR750K3 which needed them doing every service.
just under 25000 now and its the k6 model, how could I be sure if it needs to be done or not?? or is it just best to hook it up and have a look? she rides fine when I'm giving it the beans :)

Check your idle speed adjustment as a low idle can cause those symptoms and is simple to adjust - remember though to ensure your bike is at full working temperature when making the adjustment.
Throttle bodies out of balance will generally show as rough or dipping idle, sometimes they sound like its "hunting" and slightly rough throttle response. Generally on full throttle they dont feel too bad but it does depend on how far out they are.
Thanks I will have a look at it and see what happens:) what should it be???

Throttle bodies mucky? Causing them to stick?

Right here is where I'm at i have checked idle speed adjustment and it's now at 1300 it was at 1200 so didn't need to be messed with, but had to try haha any how bike still doing it :( Muzikill what's the best way of dealing with mucky throttle bodies??
I was also thinking of throwing a new air filter in?? any thoughts on this?? just in case!

If the air filter looks clean then it should be fine.
Plugs, and throttle body balance.
The injectors can become contaminated but the fuel pump has a filter inside it to prevent dirt getting into the injectors. You would get running problems through the rev range also. You can drain the tank and check the fuel for water/rust but id look at throttle body balance, plugs first.
try the simple stuff first.
battery connections: make sure they are tight
water in the fuel: chuck some 'dry fuel' in
kinked breather/vacuum hose: visually inspect. wiggle while bike is running
oil level: visually inspect and top up if necessary
plugs: when were they last changed
TPS: where is it set at
how many miles has the bike done and what's the service record?
Thanks will work my way down the list :) it's do near 25000 now and was last serviced about ten month back!!! but I didn't own it then so cant say what was done!!

Do you have a record of who did the service as most places now keep computerised records. My system tells me all the history of every bike that comes through the workshop. Might be worth a phonecall.
:D Will give them a ring to find out what was done fingers crossed!

how many miles has it done since the last service?
or how many miles have you done since you have owned it?
I had the same this year. Spannerman cleaned up the battery connections, set the idle, and also did the thing of pinning out something under my seat and setting something via the dash screen, which was apparently miles out. (note the lack of technical knowledge here!). She's run fine ever since.
hey spoke to the garage and he said all he did was oil change  so not sounding good!! i'v done 3000 on her in all weathers! what is this under the seat pinning your on about

Well if you have done 3K miles since the last oil change only 'service', you would be well advised to go and get a proper full service done by a reputable mechanic. They should be able to cure the uneven running by making sure everything is correctly adjusted. If the problem persists after this, then you can go into fault finding mode...

As luckypants says. The pinning out would be the way you put the bike into dealermode if you havent got the proper Suzuki software.
The prev owner probaly was saving costs like alot do and just had the oil changed.

The guide aims for 1450rpm where as mine was set at 3-4K!

Just a note the TPS is a service item normally set on each service via the SDS software, if its never been done then its well worth doing BUT it isnt a "mod" so to speak. Read that thread with a pinch of salt in some areas as not all info is technically correct, ie it doesnt alter the amount of fuel delivered etc.
It is though worth checking and doing on a service and is often overlooked, like balancing throttle bodies.
Thanks guy's I think i'm going to get it service like you say that way I'm sure of what's what!!!:)

Where ever you take it ask for what you want doing ie, Throttle bodies, TPS etc otherwise the garage may not do them thinking that you dont want them doing, if you know what I mean!!
BTW i am a girl:cool:

If you do a search for my k3 rebuild threads you will get one for the throttle bodies that will give you some tips
Im not saying you will need this but i thought i would post it just in case

I was getting intermittent cutout and eventually worked out that it was the thingamajig that cuts the engine if you fall off. It had come off its mounting and was obviously lying at an angle between run and cut off. Put it back and she runs fine again.

That'll be TPS adjustment...;)

Is it just when you pull away for the first few times? or is it perminant?
it is permanently doing it not so much cutting out but dipping on tick over and low speed's

Oh right... I have no knowledgeable input to this conversation. Ahahaa, are you still getting this problem?

The official manual is your friend there is a great fault finding process for this... It could be a number of things..
Thanks muz, yeah still getting it had new oil filter plugs ects but not stopped it:hackedoff:
