It is losing air so my questions are
Can you get the wheel repaired
Would you trust the repair

Thanks for looking

Wouldn't want to try any lean angles in the wet on those tyres.

I had this happen to my front rim. It was not as bad as that but still it was a nice dent. There was a thread about it but cant rember were it is.

The thing I found trying to get it fixed is no one wants anything to do with it . As when they bash it back it might crack which you can't see. They don't wanna be the ones that made you wheel disintergrate with you on the bike.

It also costs a lot of money as they want to get it X- rayed to make sure it's not all cracked.

Best bet is the org shopping center or eBay.

I think I was looking at around £150 - £200 to get my wheel fixed and I just ended up buying one off the org for £60 needed a paint job but that was cheap all in all cost me just under £100.

yep sorry forgot to mention it is a honda cbr1000rr 08
having it straightened would concern me when on the track
although at the minute with crimbo just around the corner money is tight to say the least
I am having trouble finding a used one so far too
Cheers for all the replies so far

Keep an eye on eBay for a new one. Kind of out of season now though for breaker sport bike parts.

If you know where it happened take a photo of the pot hole (inc. depth, width etc) and the damage and send to the council. I think they're obliged to rectify if the pot hole is bad enough.

Might sound a bit archaic but I'd be tempted to get it knocked back in and then just get the rear wheel balanced to check it's back in the right place. Then as long as the air isn't bleeding out then you're golden.

Or there's always the option of replacing the 'orrible 3 spoke enkei's with some marchesini's!!

That is Not advice I would follow on a cast wheel! A steel car wheel, yeah no problem but cast metals are known crack and then fail after a heavy impact, sods law means that will happen at the worst possible moment and the OP has said he takes the bike on track so it would either fail then or when the tyre was being changed and it popped onto the bead.

When you try to put a stubborn bead on with a lot of psi is not a good time to discover a wheel has previously been repaired!

Things as they stand

I could get it fixed in theory £75
So far i have only found one used wheel on ebay and it comes as a pair current bid £355
A new rear wheel from Honda is £570
A new set of Dymag wheels is £1200

What would you do?

Is there not a more common / cheaper wheel thats compatible?

I would either buy the used set of wheels, and flog the front to get some money back. Most crashes are front end or somebody may be upgrading to Gixxer front forks, somebody will want it.

Or possibly buy a new wheel and claim it on my fully comp insurance.

worth a punt?

sandman

Not protected
I think my excess is pretty close to a new wheel as well
My best bet at the minute is trying claim on the council
Although i would not hold my breath

Jerry, there is a pothole near me that nearly catches me out everytime I am on my way home. I really should complain to the council before somebody gets injured.

Jerry, as its the rear wheel I would be looking for a pothole on a bend too. It would be suspicious if you hit a pothole with just the rear on the straight. There is a hole in the road near me as you turn right from a junction, I will see how bad that is for you mate.

Cheers Buddy

Just bought a rear from a breakers yard up in Doncaster
Cost including carriage is £260 then another £50 to get the bike picked up and have the wheel changed and tire put back on.

I will then take the damaged one to one of the repairers and then try to flog it on ebay

It would need to be a left hand bend too. Would look rather suspect if you damaged the left hand side whilst turning right.

How did you not end up in a hedge hitting a pothole big enough to do that damage on a left hand bend ? And...be unsure you actually hit a pothole?

sandman

No idea how the bike got the damage

I remember clipping a roundabout (with low kerbstones only 2 -3 inches high) the day and the rear kicking out but that is on the wrong side

I also rember a few weeks back thinking man that was a nasty pothole but as nothing went bang and i didn't slide down the road i didn't stop thinking everything was ok (if i stopped around here everytime i hit a pot hole i would not get anywhere!)

I think the bike will be put away until March now

I dont often feel the need to reply to threads on here, but this surely is the cause of a lot of threads that moan about increased costs...................

Look at what has been said:

Sandman: "Still searching for a big pothole near to where i live so i can take a picture and send off to the council"

FG1 "Jerry, as its the rear wheel I would be looking for a pothole on a bend too. It would be suspicious if you hit a pothole with just the rear on the straight. There is a hole in the road near me as you turn right from a junction, I will see how bad that is for you mate. "

You have already stated that you cant remember how the damage
was caused, so if a claim was made against your local council/ highways department, surely that would be fraud with both of you implicated.................

My thoughts.

I will be re tracing my route this weekend in the car as it was a very short journey
