View Full Version : Looking for a bit of mechanic help. Clio 1.2
Guys I looking for a little help from mechanic types before I go buy some parts for Mrs Ratty’s Clio. It’s had a bit of a fuelling glitch just off tick over as you pull away and economy has been deteriorating. It started to get worse on the school run this evening so I give it a bit of a boot-full to try and clear it’s throat. It then went onto 3 followed by the exhaust gas light starting to flash. Now I’m suspecting the coil pack, but it’s about £50 to buy ( one piece unit ). I can’t get the plugs out until tomorrow because I need a special plug spanner but I pulled out the lead from the offending cylinder a put an old plug from the SV into the cap. It’s showing a spark but looks weak and intermittent, changing from orange to blue. What do you think ? Coil pack or something else. Water level is fine and oil doesn’t seem to be contaminated so I guessing the head gasket is ok. It’s a 54 plate 1.2 16V.
Thanks in advance.
Alan

can you not get a diagnostic on the thing for a few quid ? may save you paying more on trial and error.
what your describing does say it could be the coil but it could be the plug that u have used. i'm not sure if ther is a resistance test on the coil that would give a better idea to see if the LV side is screwd.
This sounds like the problem I had on my 1.4 scenic a couple of months ago, it was the coils with me (pencil type). I got one from my local Motorstore for £18, might be a different one for the clio but I'd shop around before paying £50 for one. Motorstore were doin a pack of 4 for around £70 as well but the guy there advised me just to take one as they would rarely all go at the same time.
If you like I could call with them tomorrow if you don't have a local branch and get you a price if you can give me the year of the car?
Hope this helps.
Cheers for the replies guys. The item for the clio II is a one piece unit with all four leads. I can see them cheaper on ebay but I need to get her car right before she goes back to work on Monday. I get all my stuff from Partco and they are usually very competative on price so I think I'll give it a go in the morning because they have them in stock. I check back here in the morning for any more advice before I shoot off. Thanks again.

Check the wiring as it goes into the steel shell that surrounds the ECU, it is a bitch to get off unless you know how.
Also the EGR can be a suspect. Best shove an analyser on it.

Checked this out and it seems to have been protected at some time.
Went and got the coil pack for £44 + vat and it's sorted it. Also got the spark plug tool at the same time and all came to £60. Very easy job to do with just a flat blade screwdriver and a T30 torx bit in a wrench to sort it.
Thanks for the replies guys.
