View Full Version : HID Light Failure

Well my HIDS4U HID lamp has gone wrong, had them since 2008. Still more money on headlight than most* spend in a lifetime...

Worth the money though, it's sodding bright and done a hell of a mileage. But still far less operating hours than I'd expect even from a normal halogen.

It was fine for ages, then going to work it appeared dim and slightly red for a few seconds before illuminating as normal.
Setting off home from work it would "flare" as normal from the HV starting, but then continue to strobe until eventually switching off and staying off.

Has anyone got experience of these lights failure modes? Does it sound like a bad capsule?
The capsule certainly looks knackered, but I don't want to replace it and fry the replacement too.

Chris:
I've still got the one I bought from TheLoneWolf & never fitted.
Any use if you're in a spot?

Has it got a dc ballast. Hid don't last long unless they are .
Sounds to be the ballast , but you need to be v carefull with sutch hi voltages. Best get a new one before killing a new bulb

Shame you're not down here with us soft southerners, got a full kit sitting on my shelf as spare. Had a ballast go, think from use of acf50 stuff, so keep a spare kit.

ps get a full kit as some of the older relays are not compatible with the newer ballasts.

Should be marked with its output voltages .
You can try a bulb. I have got a good bulb with duff dip solinoied if it goes black no loss .

Relay doesn't matter, I don't use the one that came with it, it has direct feed from another simple relay, hi beam solenoid gets it's own feed from switch.
