Evening guys and gals, I have just bought an LG 42LV355U LED tv and am looking to get a surround sound system. I can't figure out how I'm going to hook it up. My budget only allows for systems that have a scart connection. I have only one scart connector on the tv. It has a little symbol under it that looks like it could mean input or ouput. Can anyone offer some advice as the manual only really explains how to connect via Digital Optical cable.

The tv scart will be an input but scart is two way anyway isn't it?

What you trying to hook up?

what's your budget?

how many devices do you want to hook up to your surround? e.g. playstation, video, dvd, blu-ray....

About £100. I thought that the tv would output whatever is being played through the SS system?

Is there any phono sockets on the tv?, a lot have phono outputs which you can hook up to a surround system.

if only life were so easy.. i have had a look at the specs of your TV and it has 1 output which is digital (coaxial/optical).

this is where the fun begins. you would have to make sure that your TV will output all input connections to the output when switched. e.g. when you are watching a dvd the tv will send an uninterrupted signal to the output. big problems arise when the TV output (SPDIF) is not variable e.g. the volume on the remote has no effect on the output.

if it does then you are in luck as you can get a computer 5.1 system that has 'SPDIF' input and use that. only problem with doing it in such a way is what ever source you are using has to be able to output 'surround sound' via the TV so the SS system can decode it.

so what you will end up doing is:

DVD/etc.etc connected to TV, TV sends signal via SPDIF to 5.1 SS, 5.1 SS then decodes signal from SPDIF.

if the SPDIF is variable then turn the 5.1 SS up full volume and use the TV remote to control the volume.

hope this helps...

Most TV's will only pass Dolby Digital 2CH (stereo sound) out through the digital sound output, I could be wrong about this particular model however 99% of TV's I have seen (including the high end ones) wont output in 5.1 even via the digital out

SCART will not carry HD video for your TV nor multi channel audio for the surround sound, and it is not digital either. If you want to use any of the HDTV or true surround sound features get an HDMI system. Pretty sure there's tones of them on eBay and very cheap.

I'm trying to keep the number of wires down so I guess I will have to find a system with an optical audio. Have to see what's in the Boxing day sales.

Does your tv have Bluetooth? My parents one does... Not sure how much a bluetooth surround setup costs though...

No, no bluetooth. I have noticed some SS systems connect via the headphone jack. Given the day I've had with money the idea is on the backburner until the new year sales.

TVs have Bluetooth now? I am severely behind the times then!

What's your budget? Richer Sounds have a 5.1 system with HDMI connections for £199 (LG) or an Onkyo 2.1 (the AV receiver is built into the sub) for the same price.
