Wife is buying me an enduro lid for xmas but ive gotta order it myself, ive decided on the Airoh S4 as it seems a good lid for the money (dont wanna spend loads as it will get abused while green laning)

I was set on white tbh but having sencond thoughts now, whats peoples thoughts?

There is a higher accident rate for those wearing black helmets (due to lower visibility). Office Gov reports on the web if you want to search for yourself.
PS. I have a white helmet, every little helps :)

I usually go for light lids too, but this is just for green laning and getting to and from on a crosser (so 10foot tall anyway) I'm guessing. Whatever you prefer, I'd go for black personally.

I actually prefer the look of the white lid tbh, but i know from my partial arai road lid, it does get dirty quick.

Looks like peeps are saying white

Ive have / had two black bikes, i think they look ace, no other colour looks as good when polished up.

This is a matt black lid btw so will never look shiny.

There's also a higher risk if you ride a bike to a car, or a car to a bus, or a bus to a plane. You could go on trying to risk reduce forever. IMHO go with what you like best.

I think if you check, something along the lines of 76% of statistics are made up.....

Your point being?
If you like black wear black, it was just information not a recommendation.

I have a black one of those with both tinted and clear visor. Off-road defo better with goggles (to prevent misting) and remove peak for road use (to avoid vibrations caused by peak catching wind over 50mph). They are an OK lid, but I wouldnt buy another as they dont do any one thing well (road or enduro)

I would buy one of these (http://www.denniswinter.com/off-road-c1/riding-gear-c27/helmets-c42/acerbis-2012-active-dual-sport-helmet-p617) instead.

Hadnt seen that one before.
This is purely for green laning for me, im gonna try and get a pinlock for the misting and hopefully it will be good.

Im using my first cheap lid atm so it cant be worse than that (i hope)

Dont get me wrong they are not a bad lid at all I use mine for green lanes with goggles, but they are not great either.

Jolly good, but circumstantial rather than absolute. Forgetting that it's a study dating from 1993-1996 conducted in Auckland NZ.

It's doesn't say black helmets it says darker coloured helmets.

Is it not more likely that there are far more Dark Coloured helmets in use than White helmets?

Utter cobblers.

My last five bikes and my last four helmets have been black... Hovis (RIP) was wearing a yellow helmet and rode a bright yellow bike - I'm not dead, therefore a black helmet and bike are safer.

Could it also be influenced by fashion changes?
Bikes used to be more colourful, things have toned down a bit, black lids, bikes and clothing are popular lately so this will fudge figures imo.

Ive ordered white anyway

They only see you if they actually look your way.

In all seriousness, I've found that wearing all black and riding an all black bike to be safer. I'm told I'm silhouetted against everything else out there. Look down a typical street at any time of day and its a sea of different colours with reds, greens, blues, dayglos and all sorts in there. Now imagine a black blob moving across that wall of colour... that's me on my bike.

YC firmly sticks to this theory too. I used to have a black lid, I've now made a compromise and got a silver, black and white one. I ride more at night at the moment, if I was stupid enough to ride without my headlight on then clearly wearing a black lid would be of no benefit whatsoever ;) but it makes not difference what colour it is at night with the light on. And as for riding in the day, a black helmet and clothing make for a far more obvious recognizable shape than white, particularly in bright sunny conditions. In my opinion anywho.

Just out of interest, why don't they add reflective strips to helmets? It could be done in an attractive manner I'm sure. Is it just a given that the clothing a biker wears should have reflective bits?

Hmmm, I'll have to look at those. Tried the new one from Spada, but it doesn't fit. At the end of the day though, the helmet I use for green laning does the job, it just doesn't look the part.

They were goading me on to do it, I fancied my chances, and Phil just wanted to see if I could, so I made Phil promise he'd wade in and help pull me out if I got stuck.

Wasn't expecting an 18 inch hole in the river bed though, I have to admit. I've still got a headlight full of water, and it's sealed unit so it can only get in the back where the bulb screws in. That shows how deep it was at the front of the bike, and the XT has a 21 inch front wheel and long front forks!
