What to use to clean oil from back wheel, tyre and rear brake?

sprocket came loose and dumped all the oil over the rear of the bike.

Cleaned a lot off but getting oil creeping onto the outer edge of the rear tyre and it's getting sketchy.

anyone tell me the best method of removing said oil from tyre, wheel and rear brake....?

Not overly sure how your sprocket coming loose will dump oil over your tyre and brake. But clearly you've got oil that needs cleaning up, clean the most of it up with some form of tissue/rag/kitchen paper. Then I use brake cleaner and clean rag to get the last bit off. Careful though, make sure you get as much off as possible before riding for obvious reasons. Also if it's engine oil, which I'm assuming it is, then check and fill up the oil if necessary. Also that sprocket probably wants looking into. Shouldn't come loose and dump oil everywhere.

Had you just lubed your chain? It could have just flung excess oil onto the tyre & wheel.
Best thing I've found for cleaning chain lube off the wheel is WD40. Spray onto a rag & wipe it off, job jobbed :)

If the oil has impregnated the rear brake pads and you are loosing rear braking efficiency change them as this is not a good time of year to be more dependent on front wheel braking

Contact/brake cleaner for wheels and pads. If pads have been contaminated beyond the surface I'd guess replacing them is safest but I'd use contact cleaner first. Tyres I'm not sure - soapy water.

theres a degreaser from a company called Astonish thats great for oily crud after youve mopped up the worst, although it does need washing off with plenty of soapy water.

Its only £1 a bottle with spray nozzle so cheap enough to use it all.

+1 on the wd40 though, used that plenty of times myself as I use old engine oil for my chain so flings oil everywhere :rolleyes:

The locking lip on the nut that holds the sprocket on came loose and dumped all the oil out! scary shizzle!

Thanks for the advice. I bought some brake/clutch cleaner and now my back wheel looks new, thanks!

The centifugal force spread the oil up the wall and onto the edge of the tyre which was well sketchy, but now it's all cleaned up. Will clean the rear disk and pads too and hopefully get the rear brake working as it should (just in time for the bike to go into storage for the winter) -(fair weather rider).
